I was pretty skeptical of UFOs until last year. I live here just outside of Houston, nearby to Katy. My wife (who's also pretty skeptical of things like UFOs), were coming home from the grocery store, heading north from I-10 on Fry Road. This is something we basically do twice a week together. It was on a Sunday evening before dusk, and the sun was just setting.
We were at a stop light and something caught our attention straight ahead in our field of vision. Three bright green balls can be seen lazily dropping from the sky from the left hand side of the street. At first it looked like someone was playing with fireworks or something. However, they seemed a bit to high in the sky for the amateur teenager playing with fireworks, and it was at a time that they were not allowed to be used. Then we noticed the three balls form a sort of triangular shape, just floating and stationary - certainly not fireworks but something with form. I asked my wife if she was seeing what I was seeing. She said yes, and we sort of shrugged our shoulders, and shaked our heads. Then as we intently looked at these things, the stop light turned green, and the triangular formed balls started moving north up Fry Road in our same direction. My natural intention was to keep up with them, but suddenly these things sort of joined together as one unit and shot off into the northern horizon at incredible speed, vanishing into the distance. We stopped the car and just looked at each other, and were in awe of what we just saw.
Needless to say, I've had new attitude about UFOs since then.

So the zombie apocalypse is here and you need to survive. You’re a health-minded person who has been prepping for anything by eating healthy and working out. However, now that zombies have ravaged the landscape and you’re holed up in your fortress, you’ll need supplementation to ensure that you can look as good as Charlton Heston in Omega Man or Will Smith in I am Legend. But with limited supplies, what supplements should you be concerned with taking? The following is a list of six supplements that will help you stay alert and healthy while you fight off blood-sucking zombies.
Vitamin C: Sure, fruits and vegetables contain a good amount of ascorbic acid, but zombies have burned most of the crop and fruits are hard to keep fresh. Do you really want to try and fight off zombies if you have scurvy? I didn’t think so. Besides, Vitamin C is one supplement that is cheap, you can stockpile, and there are so many benefits. From being one of the most potent antioxidants, to regulating your body’s immune system to help prevent cancers and other terrible diseases, Vitamin C is something that should be in your zombie supplement arsenal for sure.
How much?: The North American Dietary Reference Intake’s recommendations of 90mg a day are quite low according to so many doctors and health experts. Anywhere from 500mg to 3000mg is recommended depending on your needs. Do your own research on a dosage that you can tolerate. Over 2,000mg daily could result in some side effects, so scale back if this happens.
Vitamin D3: Okay, we’re assuming that you’ll be able to go out during the day and get some sunlight. But what if you live in England, Washington state or some other cloud covered, colder than a freezer climate? Worse, what if we’ve been wrong all along and zombies are not nocturnal, meaning the only time you’re able to get out is at night while the man-eaters are sleeping. Well, you’re going to need to supplement with Vitamin D. This little wonder is so vital for your body in so many ways. It helps your body use calcium from the diet, prevents rickets, decreases the risk of varying diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and asthma. It can also lead to an improvement in cognitive function. Remember, the key to fighting off zombies is to be strong and levelheaded. This is why Vitamin D is so important. It’s worth noting that many people today are not getting optimal levels of Vitamin D. This is truly tragic and preventable.
How much?: 600 IU minimum per day. The safe upper limit is nearly 4,000 IU daily. If you’re feeling tired, sick and worn out, bumping up the Vitamin D may be the answer.
Digestive Enzymes: Food is scarce and often rancid. Although you’d like to stay on a high vegetable, low grain diet, the only food around is an old box of Twinkies. There’s also a shady looking dead rabbit you could consume. How is your digestive tract going to handle this bomb? Enzymes. Enzymes are catalysts to chemical reactions, helping your body benefit by turning food into something that can be absorbed and sustain life. Look for a product that has components to break down fats, proteins and starches. A product that has included Bromelain and Turmeric is an added bonus as it could reduce inflammation in the body. The key to survival during the zombie apocalypse is to be adaptable. You must adapt or die. Digestive enzymes will help your body adapt to your new diet.
How much?: Take enzymes with every meal. Some experts recommend taking enzymes between meals to increase food utilization. The dose will really depend on the product. Look for a high quality product and do your own research on what enzymes you may need to supplement.
N-Acetylcytseine (NAC): Zombies have killed everything you love and care about. You’re probably coping by breaking into the stockpile of liquor that you have. That’s fine, but remember that the key to survival is to stay healthy. There are many problems with alcohol: one being that it can turn your liver into Swiss cheese. The answer? Moderation is clearly the answer, but NAC will help your liver recover from the abuse given to it by Uncle Jack and his brother Jim. NAC is used for many reasons in the health industry to protect the liver, kidneys and other organs from toxicity from alcohol, acetaminophen and sickness. NAC has many other uses as well. New studies are even showing a benefit of NAC supplementation for children with autism. If you have an afternoon free, I strongly suggest researching all the benefits of N- Acetylcysteine.
How much?: 200mg daily should suffice. NAC is very potent and low doses have shown to be effective.
High Quality Protein: Some people may be shocked by this choice, but I have to assume you never believed the apocalypse was coming. Therefore, you probably don’t have a rifle, shotgun, or crossbow capable of killing large or small game. You probably also don’t know jack about gardening, so you are going to struggle finding enough quality vegetable or animal protein to sustain your body. Protein shakes are a very practical and cost-effective solution to this problem. A tub of protein will ensure you get enough protein to sustain life for nearly a month while you figure out how to hunt. I’m not going to get too picky with the selection of the protein you get. Just make sure it doesn’t have synthetic Vitamin E or any other possible problematic ingredient. If you’re lactose intolerant, make sure the protein is mostly lactose free. Whey protein hydrosylate and isolate supplements are nearly all lactose free. If you can’t tolerate any milk related products, there are great vegetable protein powders out there. Additionally, there are many naturally flavored products out there for those who don’t want Splenda or artificial sweeteners in their powders.
How much?: You don’t need a crazy amount of protein to survive, but you’ll need enough to sustain your energy needs. 50 grams of protein a day is enough to get by. If this is your only protein source, you may need more. This may mean 1 or 2 shakes a day. Take your digestive enzymes with the shake to get additional absorption.
L Carnitine- Preferably Acetyl L-Carnitine. Last night a zombie tried to eat off your face so you need something to help your body produce energy. Acetyl L-Carnitine is your friend during this zombie takeover. It works by helping your body to promote energy production. Acetyl L- Carnitine also acts like an antioxidant, protecting your body from the rigors of living during the end times. Studies have linked low Carnitine levels to erectile dysfunction and infertility. This is important because you may be called on to re-populate Earth after the scourge of the zombie is defeated. Again, you need to be mentally aware to stay alive and Acetyl L-Carnitine has been used to raise cognitive function.
How much?: 500 mg twice daily.
So now you are prepared for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. You know what supplements may help you survive and maintain a level head. Alright, there may not be an inevitable zombie takeover, but there are certainly rough times ahead for all of us, especially those liberty-minded people who care about nutritional supplements. For supplements, the apocalypse may be closer than many think. Government agencies and Big Pharma are working closely to prevent you from taking control over your own health. These are perhaps the true zombies. As you can tell by the disclaimer at the beginning of this article, the government has scared liberty-minded people to the point where truthful health statements are often followed by a disclaimer because a government "zombie" has not given their blessing. Free speech and liberty is truly under attack by zombies. They may not be the undead, but they are truly the unwise and they’re trying to make you the un-free.
Ron Paul is not going to be president. It’s sad, but true. And while millions of dreams have been destroyed, for those of us in the Liberty movement, things are just getting interesting. For the first time in decades, the very existence of the Federal Reserve Bank is under scrutiny by those even in the mainstream press. Keynesianism, although still embraced soundly by statists, has shown itself to be an abysmal failure.
The GOP is slowly being transformed by Liberty minded candidates. Yes, there is plenty to be optimistic about. But I wonder, how far will this movement go when the establishment pushes back? Make no mistake, while progress has been made, the establishment will push hard.
There will undoubtedly by resistance during the GOP convention. Rick Santorum recently stated, he "was ready to take on Paul supporters if they are looking for a ‘platform’ fight." You can always count on a statist to be a statist when push comes to shove. And that’s my point, the state will shove, the state will push back, the state will still actively work to make you a slave.
FREEDOM IS A SICKNESS
Politicians on both left and right think you are an idiot and that you don’t know what’s good for you. In their world, free thinkers are ill, the state issues the medicine and all who oppose it are criminally insane. What is their medicine? Obamacare, the NDAA, The Senate Food Safety and Accountability Act, Michael Bloomberg’s soda ban just to name a few. Obama signed the NDAA. Mitt Romney said he would have. Right or Left, their medicine for the illness of Liberty is law. Indeed, Bastiat taught us in The Law, that law is merely force.
Every new law that passes is essentially the use of government force against its citizenry. Free people see these laws as an infringement on our lives, but our elected thieves see it as their job to protect us from ourselves. Perhaps Mayor Bloomberg’s own words put it best; "If government's purpose isn't to improve the health and longevity of its citizens, I don't know what its purpose is." It’s strange, but I didn’t see that in the Preamble.
Bastiat, Mises, Hayek, Hazlitt, Rothbard and Ron Paul all warned us that government actively works against your freedom. These proponents of free markets and have taught us, despite what Bloomberg, Romney and Obama believe, that government’s role is to preserve liberty. Freedom is the answer to corrupt government, fixed markets and the theft of taxation.
That is precisely why governments all over the world actively seek out new laws and new taxes to rob you of your freedom. The state pushes. The state is force, nothing more, nothing less. Mises instructed us in his landmark work Socialism: "If we wish to save the world from barbarism we have to conquer Socialism, but we cannot thrust it carelessly aside." We know that statists will not easily be thrust aside.
WHAT WOULD RON PAUL DO?
Paul Harvey used to famously say, "In times like these, it helps to recall there have always been times like these." The struggles we face are nothing new. The scourge of socialism (just another form of statism) has plagued civilization since its inception. It does no good to be paranoid, just be prepared. So don’t fret. Do what Ron Paul does:
Workout. At least five days a week with a mixture of resistance training and cardio to maintain good health and relieve stress. Push weights not people!
Eat clean. No processed foods, low grain, high vegetable content, no extra sweeteners or additives. Take supplements every day for optimal nutrient levels. Avoid prescription drugs whenever possible.
Embrace non-violence. The state uses enough violence for everyone. If you want change you’ll need different tactics.
Educate yourself. Read and then read some more. Then, talk about what you’ve read. The authors noted above are particularly helpful when debating a relative or co-worker who wants to take your money via the IRS or other government regulation.
Tell the truth. Speak truth to power. It’s liberating and honesty shows just how strong you are as a person. Don’t back down to pressure. Speak out when something is unjust.

In a world in which other people’s money has pretty much run out, and ahead of a rather historic Supreme Court ruling tomorrow, we believe some of these are quite relevant.
Some Useful Definitions to Understand Our Modern Progressive World
Failed Policies of the Past
Definition: Limited government, free markets, personal responsibility, liberty.
Definition: For the love of God who do we tax back to the stone-age to get out of this!?
Social Darwinism
Definition: Essentially a darling concept of the progressive left of the first half of the 20th century (along with eugenics its even more vile cousin). It now is defined as “any attempt by conservatives and libertarians to rein in the unsustainable spending of out of control government.”
Fairness
Definition: A word used to motivate making sure outcomes do not match abilities or effort. Note, pre-1970 it meant roughly the opposite.
Social Justice
Definition: Redistribution based on group affiliation, regardless of anything the actual individuals in question did, or even their specific ancestors did, but instead based on the actions of other individuals in the past who just kind of looked vaguely like those in the relevant groups being discussed now, both victim and oppressor. Also applies to redistribution of any kind, whether based on actual unfairness, or on simply outcomes liberals do not like.
Alternative definition: Unspecific. Just a meaningless phrase that screams “I am liberal and this phrase sounds liberal and nice with just a hint of revolutionary sexiness.”
Antonym: Justice (which, even if it must be applied broadly to address real group-wide wrongs, is always and everywhere an individual notion)
The Phrase “Deny Access to…”
Used in a sentence: “It is unfair to deny access to healthcare to 26 year olds living off their parents.”
Definition: When a person isn’t given something they want for free, and they have not found a way to steal it yet, they have been “denied access” to it. In general it is the “1%” that “denies access.” See “1%” below.
Entitlement
Definition: Something provided by other men and women’s labor that some claim as their right, sometimes claiming to have paid for it during their lifetime, when all forms of modern mathematics and accounting reject that notion.
Rights
Used in a sentence: “I have a right to healthcare.”
Definition: A more extreme form of “entitlement” defined above. Note that modern usage throws out the long tradition of natural rights only of a negative nature, that is, the right not to have something done to you, for rights of a positive nature, that is, the right to certain goods and services, like health care, Apple products, and soy milk. Since, no matter how important these items are, these modern positive rights must still be produced and taken from others, essentially the word “rights” now often stands for a system of slavery and theft.
Main Street
Definition: A place liberals used to ridicule as Mayberry but now pretend to love.
Regular Americans
Definition: People who support me.
Special Interests
Definition: People who support you.
Fat Cat
Definition: Something a politicians calls someone with 3x more money than the median voter who supported the politician in question.
Alternative Definition: Someone the same exact politician hits up for cash.
The 1%
Definition: Those who pay more than 1/3 the total federal income tax and are never thanked for it. More generally, they are responsible for all evil in the world today (unless they work in Hollywood or hi-tech in which case they are “honorary 99%-ers” regardless of income, tax rate, and lifestyle).
Middle-Class
Definition: A focus-group tested better word than “the poor” for progressives to use to advance their statist schemes. Some speeches by progressives now consist of just saying it over and over again in different hypnotic musical tones.
Income Inequality
Definition: What occurs when a free and productive economy includes people with different abilities, work habits, and, of course, luck. Also, one of the main reasons anyone actually works at anything.
A Fair Tax System
Definition: One in which the “rich” (i.e., those making more than the speaker of these words, or those voting for the speaker) pay 50% more than they currently pay, and the speaker and his constituents get to pay 50% less than they currently pay. These figures remain unchanged despite any starting tax rates. If this change pushes the “rich” to over 100% or the non-rich to below 0% more the fairer.

Definition: A complex multi-year dance whose sole purpose is to see how much money can be shaken out of the German middle-class.

Stimulus
Definition: Taking money from current and future Americans to undertake projects that didn’t make sense before, don’t make sense now, will net cost jobs as the stimulus must be paid for privately, but since the job losses will be hidden, and the direct hires put on the evening news, might let those in charge keep their cushy jobs a bit longer.
World War II
Definition: Mainly important as proof that Keynesian stimulus works (side note: also led to defeat of Nazis and Imperial Japan). Since it is the only such “proof” ever, and we all have nuclear weapons now, different options are being considered for future stimuli. Actually, since World War II ending did not crash the economy as Keynesians predicted at the time, frankly we’re rethinking the whole thing.
Cash for Clunkers
Definition: What we came up to replace World War II as stimulus. Many perfectly good cars destroyed, no Nazis defeated.
Definition: The act of printing pieces of paper to purchase other pieces of paper and thinking it matters at all for anything. See “dogs chasing cars” for related examples.
Austerity
Definition: Spending much more than ever before but slightly less than you had once thought you might spend which itself was a completely insane amount to spend.

Paul Ryan
Definition: A “Paul Ryan” is a Hollywood monster which kills and devours old people simply by showing them a preliminary reasonable plan to grow spending slower than we currently are, while keeping any obligations already made to the elderly.
Grand Bargain
Definition: An agreement to raise taxes now while tacitly agreeing to waive the corresponding spending cuts later. Usually done in at least a 10:1 ratio as waiving 10x the future cuts is a particularly effective amount of waiving.
Reform
Definition: To make something (e.g., government) bigger, more intrusive, less efficient, and more dictatorial.
Bipartisan
Definition: We found one old sap from the other party dying for one last shot at relevance who will add his name to our highly partisan effort.
Dodd-Frank
Definition: A verb, to “Dodd-Frank” something is to use the perpetrators of a major crime to fix things for next time. Like taking ex-computer hackers and putting them in charge of your security (this example is not perfect as this might actually work). Used in a sentence: “We really Dodd-Franked that financial reform.”

Definition: Legislators who are rightly demonized by the press and progressives for being elected to bring down the size of government and then actually trying to do so. Sons of bitches.

Definition: Something progressives get misty over when Henry Fonda is being denied it on the silver screen and when in power they deliver at the end of an explosive drone after Judge David Axelrod pronounces the target guilty.
Climate
Definition: A non-linear chaotic system that is a near-perfect example of something that is very very difficult, even using modern methods, to explain or forecast. This in no way takes away from the possible reasonableness of man-made climate change described below. Though, one might note, we get frustrated by weathermen as they can’t forecast the climate today.
Global Warming
Definition: What we now call “climate change”. Global warming was phased out as it also leads to things being too cold, and sometimes being just right. Mama Bear has been replaced with a highly volatile mix of all three bears.

Any questioning of it is absolute proof of evil. Children must be indoctrinated in it in grade school before reading or writing or arithmetic. They must then be sent to spy on and lecture their parents.
Ronald Reagan Definition: Right wing extremist President who kicked people off welfare which progressives said would be a holocaust, radically broadened free trade which progressives say has since killed American manufacturing, and whose administration perpetuated the horrible banking deregulation progressives say brought on the financial crisis.
Bill Clinton
Definition: The guy who actually did those things right above (though Reagan did some other cool
things). Oddly today’s Democrats insist that it’s Republicans who’ve changed and gotten “way more extreme” since the 1990s.
Trickle Down Economics
Definition: A brilliant marketing phrase for denigrating the truth: that a freer economy helps everyone. Not to be confused with “trickle up poverty” a perfect definition of socialism.
Democracy
Definition: An excellent form of government where if you can cobble together 51% of the people, by promising them other people’s stuff, or scaring them that you’ll take away their stuff, you can rule as a dictator. It is decidedly not the form of government originally chosen by the United States of America, which is a constitutional republic with limited government. Thankfully we’ve mostly done away with that nonsense.
Socialism
Definition: A word that is a hate crime if used about an American politician who wants us to be more like Europe. Or, alternatively, a word used by many European politicians to define themselves.

Lamenting The Lost Legacy Of Independence Day

Why do we still celebrate Independence Day? Is it a lingering habit, a mindless bit of nostalgia, a time to indulge in fireworks and barbecues, devoid of any deeper meaning? Can anyone honestly argue that our nation still honors the values, or practices the principles, for which our Founders fought?
Today, most Americans have been trained to be embarrassed by the “extremist” individualist ethos that made the protection of liberty the primary purpose of government. They have been taught to apologize for the shortcomings of the “rich white men” who led the revolution. A majority of Americans now subscribe to an expansive view of government as both great provider and beneficent leveler. Its primary purpose is to redress unequal or unhappy outcomes, regardless of their source, through wealth redistribution on a scale so vast that it mocks the concept “private property.”
As for the causes of revolution, we’ve lost sight of them, too. King George III was a champion of laissez-faire compared to the modern cradle-to-grave entitlement state. The swollen capital city named after the man who won our freedom now claims the prize for erecting “a Multitude of new offices” bent on sending out “Swarms of officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.” If there is a field of endeavor that the federal government does not yet regulate, subsidize, or penalize, just wait. A new law is only a “crisis” away.
Have these new offices been imposed on us by some malevolent force that has undermined the workings of democracy? No. We the people ceaselessly demand new offices at an accelerating rate. The majority of Americans vote as if they believe that massive new government programs— created by incomprehensibly complex laws and administered by increasingly unaccountable bureaucrats—can solve an expanding array of “problems” which our Founders would have surely concluded were the proper province of civil society and not the sovereign state.
The King was criticized for unjustly imprisoning seamen. Today, our federal and state governments imprison more of our fellow citizens than any totalitarian regime in history—the vast majority for violating a futile prohibition on the possession, sale, or consumption of substances our Founders would not have thought twice about. Vast portions of our youth are thus rendered permanently unemployable, branded as felons and outcasts with nowhere to turn but a life of crime. And yet we persist in this folly, unable to admit that drug prohibition has been as huge a failure as alcohol prohibition.
And taxes? The Founders knew a tax when they saw one—and there were very few they could abide, with or without representation. Thanks to a Supreme Court that long ago gave up defending the Constitution, we now have a chameleon levy that is not a tax when politically inconvenient yet magically becomes a tax when seeking constitutional muster. As if we didn’t have a wide enough variety of taxes, this new tax is designed to penalize anyone who refuses to participate in a great communal project designed to make every citizen even more deeply dependent on the government.
Little by little, the home of the brave and the land of the free has become a nation of rent-seeking dependents clamoring for their share of state largess. Even before the latest entitlement blowout called Obamacare, we crossed the line where more than half of Americans receive some kind of assistance from the government every month, paid for by the fewer than half that still pay income taxes. As we move into the future and the number of dependents grows while the taxpayer pool shrinks, we call the result social justice rather than its old name: theft.
Our forefathers shed blood rather than render unto King George. Yet today we madly mortgage our nation’s future to foreign powers, piling debt upon debt without limit or thought as to how it will be repaid. These debts ensnare our children and grandchildren even as we stop having them, confident in the knowledge that the government will take care of us in our old age, so why bother with the trouble and expense?
If we were still a nation capable of shame with enough intellectual integrity to call things as they are, if we hadn’t debauched our language as badly as our currency, if we had the courage to look in the mirror and see how woefully we have squandered our Founders’ legacy, this Fourth of July would be a day not of celebration but of atonement.
Give some thought to what we have lost as we mark another In Dependence Day. May providence have mercy on our nation, lest we end up getting what we deserve.

The Fourth of July was not always a national celebration of the militarization of American society and of the federal government’s never-ending quest for world domination (disguised as "defending our interests abroad"). Americans did not always attend church services on the Sunday before the Fourth of July to "honor" their "military heroes" and pray that they may kill many more human beings in other countries that have done them no harm. Americans once actually read and understood the Declaration of Independence for what it was: a declaration of secession from the British empire and a roadmap for opposing a highly centralized, militaristic empire of the sort the U.S. government has become.
The Declaration of Independence was the ultimate secessionist or states’ rights document. "Governments are instituted among men," Thomas Jefferson wrote, for the sole purpose of securing God-given, "unalienable" rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Moreover, governments derive "their just powers from the consent of the governed" and nowhere else. And "whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government . . ."
The way in which "the People" were to express their consent (or lack thereof) was through state and local political organizations. Hence, in the final paragraph of the Declaration of Independence Jefferson wrote that: "We . . . the Representatives of the united States of America . . . are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do."
It is important to note that the word "united" is not capitalized but "States" is, and that the individual states are described as "Free and Independent." Thus, the free, independent, and sovereign states were united in the cause of secession from the British empire. The phrase "united States" did not mean, and does not mean in any of the founding documents, the "United States government," as is commonly believed today. It is always in the plural to signify that the free and independent states are united in their common cause of protecting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To Jefferson and the other signers of the Declaration of Independence, each American state was sovereign in the same sense that Great Britain, France, and Spain were sovereign states. It was through "representatives of the united States" that the consent of the people was to be expressed (or not).
It was Abraham Lincoln, who Murray Rothbard once described as a masterful "liar, conniver, and manipulator," whose rhetoric began to fog the understanding of Americans of their Declaration of Independence. Lincoln’s twisted language in The Gettysburg Address that focused solely on the words "all men are created equal" in the Declaration, were designed to reinterpret the preeminent secessionist document as an anti-secessionist document. It was an attempt to fool Northern voters into believing in the absurd notion that he was a Jeffersonian.
Not that Lincoln ever believed that all men were – or should be considered to be – equal in any sense. As he stated in the September 18, 1858 debate with Stephen Douglas: "I will say than that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that here is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race" (emphasis added).
In his first inaugural address Lincoln strongly supported the Fugitive Slave Act and the proposed "Corwin Amendment" to the Constitution, which had already passed the House and Senate, which would have prohibited the federal government from ever interfering with Southern slavery. Thus, it was his position that slavery should be explicitly enshrined in the Constitution, made "express and irrevocable" to use his exact words, which is hardly the position one who believes that "all men are created equal" would take. It was empty political rhetoric at its worst.
At the time, nearly everyone else in the Northern states understood the actual meaning of the Declaration of Independence, as opposed to Lincoln’s attempt at the rhetorical bastardization of the document. This point is documented in a two-volume work entitled Northern Editorials on Secession, edited by Howard Cecil Perkins. It is a collection of 495 Northern newspaper editorials from September 1860 through June 1861 on the issue of secession. The majority of Northern newspaper editorials, writes Perkins, favored peaceful secession because Northern editorialists generally believed in the Jeffersonian dictum that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. The Southern states no longer consented to being governed by Washington, D.C., they reasoned, therefore, they should be allowed to go in peace, however misguided their reasons for secession might have been. "During the weeks following the election [of Lincoln], Perkins writes, "[Northern] editors . . . assumed that secession as a constitutional right was not in question . . . . On the contrary, the southern claim to a right of peaceable withdrawal was countenanced out of reverence for the natural law principle of government by consent of the governed."
Perkins highlights what he calls "a classic statement" of this position, written by New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley on November 9, 1860: "We hope never to live in a republic whereof one section is pinned to the residue by bayonets." At the time, the New York Tribune was the most influential newspaper in America. There are dozens of other statements to that effect from newspapers all over the Northern states. On December 17, 1860, the New York Tribune further editorialized that if "Mr. Jefferson’s statement in the Declaration of Independence that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed" is accepted, and "if it justified the secession from the British Empire of Three Millions of colonists in 1776, we do not see why it would not justify the secession of Five Millions of Southrons from the Federal Union in 1861."
This view of the Declaration of Independence, the pro-Lincoln Indianapolis Daily Journal wrote on December 22, 1860, "shows us the course to be pursued towards South Carolina. It is to let her go freely and entirely . . . without resistance." On January 11, 1861, the Kenosha, Wisconsin Democrat added that "the very freedom claimed by every individual citizen, precludes the idea of compulsory association, as individuals, as communities, or as States . . . . The right of secession adheres to the people of every sovereign state." "The founders of our government," moreover, "were constant secessionists . . . not only in theory, but in practice," the Wisconsin paper reminded its readers.
"[I]f disunion must come, let it come without war," wrote the Albany, New York Atlas and Argus on January 12, 1861. For war would mean "the ruin of business, the destruction of property, oppressive debt, grinding taxation and sacrifice of millions of lives . . ." On the same day the New York Journal of Commerce advocated the peaceful secession of the Southern states by asking, "Shall we, by such a policy [as war] change our government from a voluntary one, in which the people are sovereigns, to a despotism where one part of the people are slaves? Such is the logical deduction from the policy of the advocates of force."
On February 19, 1861 the Detroit Free Press expressed the hope that "By recognizing the independence of the Southern Confederacy, we should, to a considerable degree, disarm its people of the hostility they naturally feel towards the people of the North." If so, then the two sections could trade with one another, establishing ties that could eventually lead to a reuniting of the union.
On March 11, 1861 the Trenton, New Jersey Daily True American editorialized that failing to acquiesce in the peaceful secession of the Southern states would be to "embark in the mad and Quixotic attempt of conquering and holding the seceded States in subjugation." Furthermore, the pro-war argument that "the laws must be enforced at all hazards" [i.e., Lincoln’s argument], "are not new arguments; they are such as prevailed with Lord North and the other minions of George III and their futile efforts to crush out American Independence." A union maintained by force "would be worse than a mockery," the New Jersey newspaper wrote.
On March 21, 1861 the New York Times pointed out that even "the Abolitionists everywhere have been in favor of a dissolution of the Union from the beginning" as a way of politically isolating the Southern states and pressuring them to end slavery. (It should be noted that New York did not emancipate its last slaves until 1853). "Let us separate in peace," the Times editorialized, for "force, as a means of restoring the Union . . . is out of the question." Even the Springfield Daily Illinois State Journal, from Lincoln’s home town, wrote on April 3, 1861 that "the sooner we cut loose from the disaffected States, the better it may be for all parties and for the nation." "Public opinion in the North seems to be gradually settling down in favor of the recognition of the New Confederacy by the Federal Government," the Hartford, Connecticut Daily Courant editorialized on April 12, 1861.
Once Lincoln manipulated South Carolinians into firing on Fort Sumter as a pretext for invading his own country (the very definition of treason according to Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution), newspapers that were associated with and controlled by the Republican Party invented the fiction that there is a supposed difference between a right of secession based on Jefferson’s words in the Declaration and a "right of revolution." The former was illegitimate, they said, whereas the latter was not. This was not something that Jefferson or any other founders believed. It was an invention of the Republican Party propaganda apparatus, and is repeated to this day by pseudo-historians such as Harry Jaffa and his fellow "Straussian" neocons.
Another Republican Party fiction is the bizarre claim that Lincoln was a Jeffersonian for having mouthed the words "all men are created equal" in the Gettysburg Address. This fiction is the cornerstone of the Jaffa/Straussian false "history" of the "Civil War." (Jaffa has never written anything about the war per se, or even many of Lincoln’s actions and behavior. His books have to do mostly with the rhetoric of Lincoln’s speeches).
This second fiction has long been a cornerstone of the culture of lies and propaganda that supports American military imperialism. It is the language of permanent revolution, as the late Mel Bradford wrote in numerous articles and books, not too different from the ideology of the twentieth-century communist propagandist Leon Troksky who was also known for his theory of "permanent revolution." (It should not be surprising that many of the founders of "neoconservatism" who were students of Leo Strauss or his students, proudly boasted that they were Troskyites in their youth. The late Irving Kristol would be the best example).
By the late nineteenth century Lincoln’s bastardization of Jefferson’s language in the Declaration of Independence was employed to "justify" aggressive military imperialism in the name of spreading "equality" around the globe. "All men" means all men, not just American men, the "progressives" argued. Therefore, in the name of the sainted "Father Abraham" [Lincoln], Americans were told that it was their "divine" duty to invade, conquer, and occupy such places as the Philippines in order to bring American-style freedom to those lands. Today the Philippines, tomorrow Europe. For example, one of the most vociferous proponents of the Spanish-American war was Indiana Senator Albert Jeremiah Beveridge, who advocated the war in a speech before the U.S. Senate in which he declared that: "It was America’s destiny to set the world its example of right and honor, for we cannot fly from our world duties. We cannot retreat from any soil where Providence has unfurled our banner. It is ours to save that soil, for liberty and civilization" (Quoted in Gregg Jones, Honor in the Dust: Theodore Roosevelt, War in the Philippines, and the Rise and Fall of America’s Imperial Dream, p. 95).
More than 200,000 Filipinos were murdered by American soldiers in order to "save" their "soil" for liberty. As for the real Jeffersonians who opposed the Spanish-American war, Beveridge mocked them by saying, "the opposition tells us we ought not to rule a people without their consent." But Filipinos were not capable of self-government, he said. They needed their American occupiers to "rescue" them from "savage, bloody rule of pillage and extortion." This "march of the flag" is "America’s divine destiny," he bloviated. This last passage sounds more like the effects of the American invasion and occupation of the Philippines than the cause.
If Americans ever began celebrating the real meaning of the Declaration of Independence, then they would embrace the Jeffersonian rights of secession and nullification as a means of fighting back against governmental tyranny. They would also withdraw their support for the U.S. government’s aggressive wars of imperialism in the Middle East and elsewhere, along with its hundreds of military bases on every continent on the planet. They might even begin an opposition to being plundered by the incredibly corrupt military/industrial/congressional complex and its main funding sources, the Fed and the income tax.
