Figure if some of you guys watch a lot of movies post what you thought about it. Or maybe if you are looking for opinions on a movie. Whether that movie was recently released to theater or video, or is something that is coming out in the near future... post about it.

Usually, I think movies with fighters, singers or other athletes suck. They are usually so limited in their abilities and it shows in the performance. A lot of which could be helped if the director knew how to keep a lot of that subdued.

I'm a pretty big MMA fan, and Gina is in this movie called 'HayWire,' and it actually doesn't look that bad. It appears to have a high production value, and maybe they know her limitations and it turns out ok?

It's not coming out till January, but I'll probably check it out.

Although it was made in 2009, it just got released on DVD (at least in Norway). It seems it did awful at the box office, but what do the general public know anyway?

"Middle Men" is about the pioneers of internet commerce, which we all know used to be an euphemism for porn (until recent years). It's more of an "action"/drama than about internet pornography, and I found it to be quite good...

Worth checking out...

Why yes.

Fast Five, watched about a week ago. IMO it was entertaining. Nothing ground breaking, but I enjoyed watching it. Not really much about racing in this one like typical. There is a really AWESOME car chase in the movie though! And not just one of those throw away car chases, it's probably not as good as the one in Ronin, but it's on that level. Worth watching, particularly if you need something to do.

X-men, LOL watched this last night. I enjoyed it. It was interesting seeing some of the characters as they were younger. The visuals where well done, and the character development was better done than any of the other movies in that series.

The other two movies, I have had on my HDD for a few days and haven't gotten around to watching them yet.

Watched THOR today. Really good movie.

The story was rather simple, I don't know if it was that or if the movie was short, as it felt like I wasn't watching a full-length movie.

Nice production, great visuals, overall good interpretation of a comic imo.

I'll give it 3.5/5.0 stars.

Watched Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides this prior weekend, and it was decent.

Good production value and decent to ok story. Along with the production value, the visuals are always really well done. The action and stunts were somewhat entertaining. After a while, some of it just started to get a little boring and repetitive. Also I have no idea how many of these things they plan on making, as of course it is set up for a sequel if they so deem it worthy.

The redeeming part of the movie is the characters. I haven't enjoyed all the movies in this series, but the characters are always imo very interesting. And this movie brings some interesting characters along with it. Johnny Depp still does an EXCELLENT job at playing Jack Sparrow. As always he brings a certain humor, and simultaneously delivers both levity to keep things moving, and the gravity you would expect from the lead role in a movie. The supporting cast shines here as well. With that said, the heroines of this movie, while being very attractive, I didn't feel she brought level strength with her character as that of Jack Sparrow. The chemistry just wasn't there.

All in all, I would say this movie is worth watching. It is probably really worth watching if you are a fan of the series.

Overall, I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

I saw that too, I liked it and would give it the same rating. I did see the Imax 3d version(first time for me) and that in itself was great

I hadn't heard about it either, but it seems like my kind of film. I like Statham-movies...

I grew up on action movies, but not many good ones are produced anymore...

Watched the " Bad Teacher."

An off-color comedy starring Cameron Diaz, who plays a gold digging teacher looking for her 'Captain-Save-a-Hoe.' I thought this movie was pretty humorous, with a supporting cast that gets off-color humor as well.

I have found some of Cameron's off-camera comments to be rather annoying, but you can't help but like her in this role. She is somehow charming and obnoxious at the same time.

Her interactions with the supporting cast feel more like comics throwing out stand up instead of something that was overly scripted or planned.

3/5 Stars.

Not sure what to make of margin call, although one of my favorite actors kevin spacy(the usual suspects) is in it. It appears to be somewhat about collapse of Lehman brothers, fall of 2008.

I recently watched(twice) Moneyball, probably the greatest movie ever made about the use of statistics in business. Having read the excellent book by Michael Lewis, I waited a long time to see it. You don't have to be a baseball fan or a Bill James fan to like it.

but I believe a must see movie for any system trader.

too bad I couldn't get my wife to come along, but she did say that Brad Pitt is easy on the eyes

Saw it this weekend with my girlfriend. She's a horror movie junkie and has seen the previous two films, and she thought that this most recent installment was quite scary. If you're not familiar with the "Paranormal Activity" series, the hook is that the film is composed almost entirely of 'found video footage' of the kind you'd film with a home movie camera. This allows for some really uncanny sequences where strange phenomena takes on an extra level of spookiness because the low budget filming makes it seem that much more believable.

For me, after a while, the suspense almost got a little drawn out, and it seemed like you're just waiting for something to happen while watching "home movies" - I had the same criticism of "The Blair Witch Project," of which this film is a fairly close relative. Still, if you're looking for some really effective suspenseful movie making, this should do it for you, and it's free of all the goofy special effects and gore that ruins a lot of other movies.

Gotta admire the fact that the movie was made for roughly $5M and yet raked in $55M over the weekend!

P.S. Thanks for the tip about Moneyball. One of my friends who works at a hedge fund had some of the same impressions as you.

Really good movie here! I would say it is like the financial equivalent of 'HEAT.'

In all honesty, there really wasn't a whole lot to the movie, but just the scenes, settings, ambiance of the situations, some of the conversations really give it a deep feel. The plot is rather simple, it isn't too involved, but it is delivered in such a way that makes it feel more than it is.

Forrest approves

4/5 stars.

I've been an MMA fan for a long time. I typically dislike what film makers do with the sport, usually just making it into some silly parody of itself.

The movie wasn't ABOUT MMA, it just happened to be the back drop for it. And I was generally ok with the way they portrayed that part of the movie.

The characters where pretty interesting in the movie. Good performances as well.

Excellent movie, 4/4 stars!

Finally watched Margin Call.

Meh.

It was good just because it deals with trading. But it wasn't very entertaining in that it was not at all technical, virtually non-existent details to help (at least me) get drawn into the story.

Kevin Spacey is great as always. I don't really like Sylar, never have much. I didn't care for the CEO guy (Tuld), it just seemed so superficial and unrealistic.

Exactly my thoughts on Margin Call. It's neither an entertaining movie nor an informative documentary that would give some insights into the crisis in 2008. Hey, not even a pretty actress that would at least make up for the lack of content. Demi Moore is too old for that role now.

- Inside Job (documentary who took most profit of the crisis)
- Lord of War (based on the story of Victor Bout, one of the biggest arms dealers ever)
- Inside Man (bank heist plot, but more profound; Spike Lee movie)
- Cop Out (Buddy-Cop movie with Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Sean Williams Scott aka. Stiffler)
- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (one of the funniest movies around the Hollywood-Scene with Robert Downey Jr.)
- Office Space (need to mention it, if you gotta love it, especially if you have worked in a cubicle office...)

I know that some movies are a bit older, but they are still some of my favs

Everyone was raving about The Fighter.

I like Mark Wahlberg, but when this movie ended I just felt like it was barely starting. A very slow moving movie, and just a huge let down at the end.

I concur Big Mike...Fighter was a pointless movie that took away 2hrs of my life, as was Margin Call, as was Wall Street 2.

Although I finished watching Wall Street 2 for the second time this week - in my defense it was only because of the lovely Carey Mulligan and Brian Eno / David Byrne's memorable score of Home....a song that is staying in my head. The rest of the movie was Hollywood garbage (Brian and David also scored for the original which was just as good)

Then I watched Watt Street 1, partly to see how far Oliver Stone had changed as a director. It's almost as if a different man had made the original.

Granted the original still had typical Hollywwod BS - typical glib lines, and pointless characterizations of Wall Street with needless focus on bimbos as leading ladies (why were there women in this movie at all?) and needless focus on "stuff", on paintings, cars, houses, and other meaningless material things. As if that was a measure of achievement.

But in the end, despite its flaws, the original had a message about being a good story filled with things like Darwinism and doing the right thing in the end and simply being more "human". A conflicted story that drives me to think it was a classic movie about humans and relationships.

Other than that, all new movies simply SUCK. I can't even be bothered to watch anything new. The last few movies I watched and recommend are The Social Network, V for Vendetta (one of my all time favorites) and Dark Knight from recent memory (the original Matrix, maybe). Obviously all movies about the wondrous conflicts that torture us humans, and how our relationships and our nature can tell us wonderful and meaningful stories. Stuff that we can teach our children. Stuff with meaning. Stuff we can simply enjoy. Stuff with equal measure of bravado, color, gusto, humility, frailty and character.

To call 99% of the Hoyllwod movies "art" is an insult to human intelligence in my opinion. Of course, I guess I need to watch more independent movies, I am sure there are more meaningful and enjoyable stories being told there.

But seriously, watch these two famous clips. Tell me this does not make you stop and think. Because this is why I want to watch a movie - to think and to enjoy a good story. Maybe I am just "off" in my head a little bit

Watched Immortals recently, really enjoyed it. A good action movie. And apparently a sequel may be in the works...

Watched "We Bought a Zoo". Man enough to admit I really liked this movie. Scarlett Johansson is easy on the eyes, and Matt Damon did his typical great job. Also really enjoyed the whole story, and thought the entire movie was executed with perfection.

Highly recommended.

the last good movie I watched was called "the man from earth". it was filmed in 2007, so it's a bit old already, but those of you who haven't seen it will be in for a nice treat should you decide to watch it.

it's about a prehistorical Neanthethal man who somehow survived all those millions of years and finally decided to tell his story to a group of friends, (you can imagine the kind of reception he's going to get). his was truly a mind-boggling story. and at the end of it you'd at least give him the benefit of the doubt if not already convinced that he was telling the truth, no matter how ridiculous some of his claims might have sounded like. the ending was a bit overly dramatic to my taste, but overall it was one of the most enjoyable film I've ever watched, and it answered quite a few historical puzzles very nicely, such as, the origin of Jesus Christ, etc. I must stop here, so as not to give too many details away

Neither of these movies are new or even very recent, but recently watched them again and got to re-remember how much I like them:

Memento (2000)

Without Limits (1998)

There's not much CGI going on here, but a strong character driven movie:
Rabbit Hole (2010)

For a little more action, I dig:
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

Over the years, I've realized I like a lot of Denzel's work, including his portrayal of Frank Lucas:
American Gangster (2007)

All kinds of fun stuff here:
Heat (1995)

Not a big Tom Cruise fan, but I do enjoy the hell out of this flick:
Collateral (2004)

Classic Jean Reno
Leon: The Professional (1994)

I gotta stop. We could be here all night. And day. And night. But before I go, I'm pretty sure it's illegal for me to conclude any movie recommendation list without including:
The Big Lebowski (1998)

Some good and some wonderful (imo) films from French cinema.
These are going back a bit.

The "stuff" of hope, tragedy, love, regret revenge etc..etc..
In two parts:
Jean De Florette

and
Manon de Source

Some fun:
Amelie

Loves twists and turns:
L'Apartement

Betty Blue

Some excellent movies recommended here, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Fight Club. That's one of the best movies made in my lifetime. It works on so many levels, and I see it as a rather deep treatment of nihilism in modern form.

I'm glad to see Leon mentioned, though. That was one of my favorite movies growing up. I was 12 when it came out, and it made a lasting impression on me.

I enjoyed that movie too and totally understand about getting things in the eyes while watching it Huskies are just amazing in that they like snow and can sleep on or in it. While it freezes the skin off humans and most other animals.

Watched "21 Jump Street".

21 Jump Street (2012) - IMDb

What a horrible movie.

A couple of LOL moments, but I should have trusted my instinct and turned off the movie about 10 minutes into it.

How this movie has a 7.5 rating is beyond me. I like Jonah Hill as much as the next guy, but this movie just sucked.

I watched One Nation under Dog recently.

As a dog lover, it was hard to watch. But I am glad I did. This is definitely not something you want to watch with your kids.

But I am looking forward to rescuing some more Labs. They deserve it, unlike most of us (people)...

I missed the new Spider-Man due to spiderman fatigue and tired of remakes/reimaginings after only a few years. I was never a big fan of the Raimi movies, although I loved a few of the older comics. Maybe will catch it rental later.

Looking forward to TDKR too. And at the end of the year, The Hobbit. Rottentomtoes.com critic consensus still looks good for TDKR, > 85% (hope it doesn't drop any further, some of these bad review critics are just reviewing based on TDK and Heath Ledger; Christian Bale is also always excellent imo. Looking forward to seeing Tom Hardy as Bane too. Maybe he's a steroid-amped version of his Shinzon role, the bald romulan Picard clone in Star Trek: Nemesis Looking forward to be floored by another monstrous Batman foe. )

"Prometheus" was a bitter disappointment for me. I appreciated the great visuals. But the overall script was very lacking. Why they used hack writers, Spaithis and Lindelof is beyond me.

I like those mind bending street floor murals!

A good movie I watched last night on VOD was "Goon" with Sean William Scott. It's a pretty goofy hockey movie, but it's a lot of fun, especially for guys and people with a penchant for profanity.

Goon (2011) - IMDb

The synopsis is: "Labeled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way."

Anyway, it was a lot better than I expected, although there is a lot of footage of people getting into fights on the hockey rink. And yes, it's lighthearted.

Definitely recommend it if you want to watch something silly yet engaging.

I'm excited, but also not sure about this. Unless Jackson and co can get the rights to 'The Silmarillion' and other ancillary works from the Tolkien estate, they don't have as much to work with from the original material of J.R.R. Tolkien's total work.

Well, if you like things blowing up every 2 seconds, it is a good action movie. Don't look to close at the story...

Finally saw the TDKR over the weekend. Kind of disappointing, like Spiderman 3, stretched out to far and thin. Too many conventional and tired plot devices. Some of the lines were just embarassing in the overall context.

**Found it hard to believe Wayne's multi-billions were wiped out by a bunch of puts or was that "short puts?". I guess worst case scenario, no margin call liquidation, HFT-like repeated orders. Access to Wayne's accounts? Well they said Wayne wasn't watching the business for 8 years. But in Batman Begins, it was doing fine while he was gone. **

Interesting article on "The Black Hole"(1979) and "Event Horizon" (1997)

CommentaramaFilms: Film Friday: The Black Hole (1979) v. Event Horizon (1997)

Hope they remake the Black Hole. But not with the director of Tron: Legacy.

Fan made trailer using "Prometheus"'s trailer music. Nicely done:

Wanted to ask for my money back after seeing that movie. I can't count how many times that premise has been done before! 'Running Man' with Arnold schwarzenegger comes to mind along with at least half a dozen lesser known others.

LOL.

If you have seen The Hunger Games, or don't plan to see it, then watch this:

It's from Honest Trailers, and has lots of spoilers, but is accurate description of the movie...

Took some time off and just watched movies and drank beer. Mmm. Beer.

Watched Thor, thought it was quite good. Probably should have watched it before The Avengers.

Also watched Captain America, thought it was good. Again, should have watched it before The Avengers.

The Avengers is better than both, I am thinking of watching it again. That is very rare for me

Source: Exclusive: Sequel Title Confirmed – ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ | TrekMovie.com

Quoting
Sequel title: "Star Trek Into Darkness"

TrekMovie has confirmed with multiple sources that "Star Trek Into Darkness" has been selected as the title for the 2013 sequel to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek movie. This is a title that comes out of a long process of discussion amongst the creative team. As reported earlier, Paramount tested a number of titles for the film over the summer, including at least one title that did not include "Star Trek." Also noted in our earlier article, the title (by design) does not include a colon, like were used for the Next Generation films such as "Star Trek: First Contact" or "Star Trek: Nemesis."

While Paramount will not officially confirm the news, multiple sources have told TrekMovie this is the title they are going with as of now. It has also been reported by ComingSoon that Paramount has secured the domain names to both https://www.startrekintodarkness.com and https://www.startrekintodarknessmovie.com, neither of which has any content.

As for the title itself, "Into Darkness" does not reveal anything specific about the plot. So for those who were hoping for "Star Trek Khan" or "The Revenge of Gary Mitchell" you are out of luck. However, "Into Darkness" certainly gives us a hint that this film could have a serious tone and perhaps darker theme than the 2009 Star Trek film. On the other hand the title is also evocative of Star Trek’s core mission of going into the “darkness” of space, to seek out new life and new civilizations. Of course the current Trek team often point to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy as inspiration, with the second film in that series being titled "The Dark Knight" which itself had some very dark themes. Is this Trek sequel Star Trek’s "Dark Knight"? As that film grossed $1B world wide, I imagine Paramount is certainly hoping it is.

According to sources, the creative team are still working on how they will officially roll out this new title. The first acknowledgement will likely be made with some kind of visual treatment, either a type treatment for the title or possibly even a teaser poster or image. Indications are that this official roll out should be coming soon.

I'm glad the article stated it would not be another "Khan" or the 2nd original series pilot story of "Gary Mitchell" although a storyline involving Mitchell as part of the crew in the suggested earlier history would be fine. Aren't Trek fans sick of the Khan-like formula sequels with always some anti-Kirk or Picard bad guy "nemesis" character. The Khan-formula started because the original "Six Million Dollar Man" producer took over the movie series from Roddenberry promising to make the first sequel less than 1/5 the cost for Paramount. The series was much deeper than that in the original premise by Gene Roddenberry, and only the first Trek movie reflected more of the hard sci-fi episodes of TOS, plus it showed off the Enterprise refit like it was some awesome glacially beautiful spacefaring character. You never saw Spock scanning scientifically again after that. But anyways, if it's going to be another "dark sequel" fad, hopefully Abrams and crew will come up with something new and surprising enough.

H+: The Digital Series

I watched just a tiny bit of it. I would say that if anyone likes the basic idea,
you'll probably like the digital series. It is on you tube, so it's free.

The above was from MTV but I don't provide the link this time because it gives away too
much of the story.

You just saw it Big Mike? Yeah, I was disappointed too and was looking forward to it. Good production value. Horrible script and some lousy characters but some good cast whose talents were much wasted. The scriptwriter was a co-writer of "Star Trek: 2009" and the "Lost" series.

Maybe good news. He may not be involved in the sequel which seems to be in the works:
Ridley Scott's Prometheus Sequel Greenlit For 2014 or 2015 - Cosmic Book News

I thought this was neat:

"Prometheus" movie poster says "The search for our beginning could lead to our end."
Disney's "The Black Hole" (1979) poster says "A journey that begins where everything ends."

re: Hobbit Trailer #3, Gah! I wasn't watching, thanks BM! I hope after TDKR and Prometheus, Hobbit breaks the let-down streak and continues to knock it out of the park like LOTR did. "Prometheus" was the only sci-fi movie in decades it's director did since "Blade Runner"(1982). Hope the sequel is much better. 1024HD link:

I am a trekkie, more TNG than TOS, but I am a fan of the genre. The reboot film was good, it opened up the possibilities for several more in the series which is always welcome news, especially after the TNG-cast movies didn't do very well. I blame scripts more than the actors...

Now, when you say DVD, I hope you mean Bluray... it's a sin to watch Star Trek in SD...

The original series has great nostalgia. It started it all, so it will remain special regardless
of any trek series or movie that comes after.

The Next Generation was so-so, (at best).

Star Trek: Voyager was significantly better than TNG.

Star Trek : Enterprise (with Bakula) was terrible and a failed series.

These are my opinions. Your mileage may vary.

The bad or good, depending on ones point of view with movies like the new Star Trek one,
is that they are going back to re-do everything. The same with Superman.

===================================================

"Forget everything you knew about Superman, Wonder Woman, and Lois Lane," he said. "It's a completely new paradigm just, you know, Superman and Wonder Woman are together, and we're just going to have to live with that."

Superman reinvented: Man of Steel, Wonder Woman kiss for first time - CBS News

===================================================

If the world goes on as it has, 100 years from now people watching Star Trek movies/series
will be confused, at best. We're sort of at the beginning, so we can keep it all in our head at this
point. Going back and changing history, of whatever genre also signifies to me a lack of imagination.

I'm more of an TOS trekker. It would have been neat to have seen a "Star Trek: Phase II" series. When Star Wars hit, the major studios scrambled to make big sci-fi, so Star Trek:The Motion Picture finally took off. At the time it was in the top ten of most expensive movies ever made (under Superman that year). I also liked ST:TNG (which in it's first seasons was more like what a Star Trek:Phase II would have been like), then preferred Babylon 5 over DS9. The TOS movie Enterprise-refit is my favorite of the ship models. The model designers put strobe lights and self-illuminated lights all around the ship getting the idea from passenger airliner jets especially in night-lighting mode.

Some folks did awesome CG renderings of the ST:TMP scenes.

Happened to run into these links:

50 Most Expensive Movies Ever Made | TotalFilm.com
List of most expensive films - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I thought it was distressing that seeing the cost adjusted for inflation of "Wall-E" from 2008 to 2012, it shows the dollar, on average inflating by 1.9% per year.

I also liked ST:TNG (which in it's first seasons was more like what a Star Trek:Phase II would have been like), then preferred Babylon 5 over DS9.

I totally forgot to mention DS9. Glad someone caught that. I don't remember enough about DS9 it to
have an opinion though. Some good and some bad I think.

When I watched Star Trek (2009) on DVD the producers ( I guess ) went through the entire movie
with commentary. When they got to the end, one of them commented on the huge list of ILM people
that worked on the movie. Dozens of people. This has got to be one reason these movies are so expensive to make.

TBBT tried to sort out which Star Trek is best. (Couldn't embed video.)

Newest Skyfall trailer

Mike

I've been a fan of Daniel's work since I saw Layer Cake

and really dig what he's done for the 007 series. It's definitely gotten a lot less campy. Looks like another good one coming soon to a theater near you

I have seen only bits and pieces of this movie. It is a remake of another movie,
but I don't want to give away too much.

Players

From wikipedia: Players is a 2012 Indian action thriller heist film

Top clip is one of the dance/song numbers.

Next is the trailer.

Yes, Halloween season movie opening this Friday. 4th in this series. But it's one of the more fun suspense focused (little or no gore, thankfully) ongoing horror series.

In the first movie, the male lead was a "successful" daytrader and used a single laptop. They show a scene of him experiencing a "drawdown". (slight spoiler: but he was really dumb in how he "researched" the occult and religious references (and overall conventionally obnoxious character) . i.e. warning not to be a clueless atheist and daytrade!) And yes, for the 4th one there seems to be a cute teen girl as the main lead now. The previous three had mostly adults as the leads. The 2nd had a dog. The 3rd had a neat rotating fan camera.

I don't think I'd recommend this to you. Lots of blood and foul language. I did see it recently though.
Released in 2000. I've enclosed a clip below in case anyone wants to see a horror movie.
I think the clip gives one a much better idea of the movie than the trailer does.

It stars 2 gals playing mid teenage girls.
