The tax man may be on the hunt for the super fan who caught Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit.
Christian Lopez, 23, recovered the prized ball his father fumbled after The Captain hammered it into their section of the stands in the third inning of the Yankees' win over Tampa Bay on Saturday.
The Verizon salesman from Highland Mills, N.Y., gave the ball back to Jeter, whom he called an "icon," and the Yankees lavished a slew of prizes, including luxury box seats for every remaining home game this season and post-season and some signed memorabilia.
Now the IRS wants a piece. The prizes Lopez received are estimated to be worth more than $32,000 -- and, like game show contestants, Lopez may have to pay taxes on the gifts and prizes because the IRS considers them income.
Some estimate the IRS will put Lopez on the hook for anywhere between $5,000 and $13,000
If it comes down to that, Lopez says he'll pay the tax man because he's not about to relinquish his seats. The young government major says his family and friends will help him out.
"The IRS has a job to do, so I'm not going to hold it against them, but it would be cool if they helped me out a little on this," Lopez told the News.
The specially marked home run ball Lopez returned to Jeter was estimated to have been worth about $250,000 to $300,000 at auction.

This is the chief reason that Overhaulin' had to either go exclusively to celebrity "marks" or go out of business.
It made Chip Foose sick to his stomach that they would fix up someone's heirloom, only to have the IRS slap them with huge tax liabilities.
In some cases, the cars that were upgraded exceeded $100k in donated parts and time. So essentially, you might have some door slammer that your grandfather gave you and then suprise, Overhaulin' hooks you up, films you tearing up on national tv and then a couple of months later, you realize that you owe the IRS $25k.
Some people were literally having to sell the cars that were not only sentimental, but that Overhaulin' had just spruced up.
Our tax system is stupid, both philosophically and practically. There's loophole after loophole.
We SHOULD/NEED to go to a consumption based system (instead of an income based system)....but that will probably never happen. The Democrats profit too much from class warfare.
"A dumb man never learns. A smart man learns from his own failure and success. But a wise man learns from the failure and success of others."
Why would Democrats want this at all? Democrats completely benefit from class warfare. They literally want there to be rich and poor people at odds, because that's how they get elected.
Secondly, if you assume for a minute that the elitist Democrats actually subscribe/adopt the philosophy of their constituents.....then they'd want to keep it the way it is.
As it stands right now....the top 1% of earners pay 29% of the total taxes.
The top 5% pay HALF the income taxes. Soak that in for a minute....
The top 10% pay 63% of the taxes.
Nearly half of Americans don't pay a dime in Federal income taxes. Furthermore, the bottom 20% actually get tax refunds (without paying a dime).
If that's not Robin Hood, social redistribution of wealth, I don't know what is...
What's scary is that the burden the top earners are bearing is actually increasing. (and the idiot Democrats want to increase taxes more).
Puppet President Obama couldn't even fill his cabinet with sniveling liberals that had actually paid what they owe. So here we haev a group of people, advocating that rich people "pay their share" when the ****holes hadn't even paid theirs.
If it were up to me, I'd totally get rid of capital gains taxes, there should be no tax on value.
I'd enact a national consumption based tax system...that would be insanely simple....easy to regulate and fair for everyone (the more you spend, the more you pay in taxes....the little guy gets a small burden, the big guy gets a bigger burden, but at least he gets something for it).
I'd then pass a law that requires every member of Congress (and their rich spouses) to undergo a full Federal audit before they could ever raise taxes on another citizen.
No, the Democrats do NOT want to change the system. They like it as it is now...where they can rob people and use the money however they see fit (which usually involves paying for votes.)

I took Bluemeles remark to mean regular "old fashioned" Democrats, not the progressive ultra left-wing lunatics that are running the assylum currently . I don't think traditional Democrats are welcome in Washington anymore
