For automated trading NinjaTrader is not reliable enough. For discretionary trading it is acceptable, but there may be better solutions.

I am happy with NT7, it never crashes here. I only do discretionary trades with chart trader and develop some indicators.

I know ninja is far from perfect and I am open to alternatives, but never found a valid one, with good charting and a good chart trader, ATM, a solid user base, a choice of brokers and data feeds.

I won't say NT is perfect, not at all, but because of NT architecture, C#, and the fact that you can do virtually anything with it, many very very smart/powerful things, NT has attracted a population with an high technical level, which could has been disappointed by bugs/crash/support, etc.
But I think this population is small, and that the majority of "normal" users are happy with NT.

Do these guys (I think I' one of them) remembers the quality of the software we used 10 years ago ?
And did you compare NT with some of the popular software already used today ?
Most are much worst, no need to give names.

But go ahead, and like we says in french, "Qui aime bien châtie bien" (The one who loves well, punishes well)

I am posting this reply in order for readers who say there are no alternatives, thats not true.

First let me say I was trading live with AmpFutures using Ninjatrader 6.5 with Zenfire Data Feed which is not free for a live account. When Ninjatrader 7.0 came out there where no improvements that where meaningful to me.

I recently switch my live account to InfinityAT using Sierra Charting for only $40.00 a month and it comes with every feature you can dream about. Example (Market profile, same tradeflow charts as cqg, bidask, deltacharts as MarketDelta, and if you want use MarkeDelta the data is free.

For programmers sierra charts has three features that eliminates the need for writing programes compared to Ninjatrader.

In ninjatrader I wanted a basic Stochastic cross system buy above 20 sell below 80 and keep track of crossing k and D lines. I ninjatrader I couldn't do that without writing a program.

In sierra charts I simply used the indicator Color bar by Alert Condition I wrote it in 5 minutes once I learned how.

I have profited more with InfinityAT and Sierra Charts in two weeks than two years with ninjatrader and zenfire.

Can you drag and drop stops and targets in Sierra?
Can you define ATM strategies like Ninja?

You can certainly look for other platform, but if you don't understand the platform you will have the same results.
Do you think, after only starting, that all the NT users don't understand how to trade or how to execute a strategy and you come and discover a major bug? Its going short instead of long?
A hint: Maybe its exiting a previous trade?

Good luck with a new platform.

I understand how the platform is SUPPOSE to work. As I have stated, along withmany others, there ARE ugs in the system. I have been trying to figure out Ninjatrader for 1 year now, so I am not completely new. While I am not a programmer I work with three programmers that create strategies and do different programming for me and helps me figure things out as well. They were stumped so I came here. Thanks for your hint though, but, umm . . . . no it wasnt exiting a previous trade. UPDATE:It was actually NT: they told me to repair DB (as always) delete connection, re-add connection and it was fixed. But do I have to do this daily/weekly/monthly?

See I normally just delete and re-install the entire DB once a month but I am growing tiresome of that.

Thanks for the good wishes though. I am still looking and have found some interesting platforms.

Check the Log tab. One way you can get this result is by using NT 6.5, and it running out of memory but not alerting you. The results are just garbage once this happens, it will let you keep running backtests, there is no popup dialog box to inform you of the out of memory condition. But, it will be logged.

Mike

Did that and It does state out of memory! Thanks! So what then? Test smaller time periods?

If you are running more than 4GB in your system, and running a 64-bit OS, and you are an advanced user, you can use the large address hack:

Otherwise, consider "upgrading" to NT7 beta 20. NT7 does have superior memory management, you should be able to test a very large amount of tick data without hitting the memory wall.

But I think this population is small, and that the majority of "normal" users are happy with NT.

If you use NT 6.5. with Interactive Brokers, even a "normal" user can not be happy:

- crashes every day on loading data
- false volume spikes
- daily data for some instruments (TF, BC, DX) completely false in CET time zone
- order being executed in the wrong contract month (CL)

This is completely inacceptable, and I do not agree. All of this is related to the combination NT 6.5. / IB. They should simply not pretend that NT 6.5. can be used as a front-end for IB!

@Fat Tails,

I know there are some documented major problems with NinjaTrader and Interactive Brokers when trading energy contracts like CL. Are these issues restricted to NT 6.5 and are fixed in NT7, or do they still exist in NT7?

The issues are fixed in NT7 via a different symbol mapping. For example, you need to change CL to CL||||1.

The "issue" was rather simple. IB's API uses as contract month the month of the last trading date. NT uses as contract month the nominal contract month. The problem therefore occurs for all instruments that expire prior to the nominal contract month.

This includes CL, RB, HO, BC (Brent Crude), but also agriculturals such as SB (sugar).
