shadowtrader? of fractal trend line trading? if yes how it go for you?

I am still paper trading with it - first impressions = the fractal indicators provide good timely signals -- currently learning pattern recognition and I am on a steep learning curve.
I will advise how the trading goes when I finally go live...

cheers

Sam, I am curious.. have you ever tried trading spot FX through IB?

I do all my forex trades (automated) through ninja+IB/TWS and have not experienced any of these kind of problems. But I do not trade stocks or futures through IB, for futures I have another account with Mirus.

One bug which I do see sometimes is 'phantom positions' which are visible in both TWS and Ninja but are not really active, ie it shows a position with quantity 0. This can have effect on your money management strategy potentially since Ninja sees it as an open position even though it has 0 quantity (and you cannot get rid of these positions with Ninja, only in TWS). It is relatively easy to work around though by checking for quantity to make sure a position is real.

I am using TWS version 897.6, I try not to upgrade it if possible as you never know what kind of bugs they will introduce with each new version. I am not sure who is worse IB TWS coders or Ninja, it would be a tough call..

Their is few threads on this, here on futures.io (formerly BMT) and on the official NT forum.
The main issues, for me, are:
- ETF/Stock last prices stop updating, after a random period. I had, for testing this, another software on the same IB feed, Quotetracker, and it did not had the same issue, so this is not an TWS bug. I asked NT support, no smart answers, and it still not resolved after 3 or 4 NT updates.
- The CL and other energy futures expiry problem: see this long post. Because of this, it's impossible to use automated strat.
- Last week, with an TWS web version, some new errors messages (see screenshot).

It seems that NT support team doesn't talk a lot to IB support team, and the communication part between them is not very reliable...

I agree with you its a piece of junk. Right now as im typing I just do a simple thing like add an indicator to a basic 1M chart and the whole thing is greyed out cant do anything wondering if it will recover or not who knows. Will lose all data setup, who knows what will happen. This happens randomly, NT has a problem and has to close blah blah. Cant restore any other chart while its "Doing" whatever it is its doing. In all honesty its totally unreliable to be risking money with.

Big Mike....thank you for making this a truly open forum where we hear BOTH the merits of NT and the slings and arrows. I have had few issues using the software but appreciate the concerns raised as cautionary flags.

I noticed in your screen capture your using TWS version 898.4 The supported version for NT of TWS is still 895.3. I update to a version higher than 895.3 by accident and was having a lot of crashes. Reloaded 895.3 and crashes went away. You might want to revert back to 895.3 see if that helps you.

I reboot my computer before loading TWS and Ninja, using 2 monitors and from 4 to as high as 12 charts, and 1 Market Matrix, I've had 1 freeze up in last 45 days it was TWS that froze. Vista 4 gig mem. No problems with stocks or ETF's slowing down or missing data.

I also I run the DB repair before exiting Ninja.

I have a 2nd Vista machine that would freeze up on Ninja using IB or barcharts. Maybe 1 a day or 25 times a day it was very random. I kept updating my video drivers and lan drivers as new ones came out, at somepoint it stopped freezing. So far its been freeze free for 3 weeks. As someone else posted they had multi mpnitor issues that didn't show up on apps other than Ninja and Outlook. Mine was only freezing on Ninja.

Hi All,

I just remembered something that slows NT down and causes problems.

With your screens setup for trading, with your datafeed connected, open in editor any indicator.

Open the editor output screen and check to make sure the screen remains blank.

If any indicator in use is outputting to this screen, track the indicator down and comment out the "Print" code lines in that indicator.

I hope this will be useful to someone,

RJay

Thanks for your answer Jeff.
Without going to deeply in details, in some cases I have to use the TWS web version, so I can't use and old version, like we can do with the standalone one. Ans the TWS web version is changing every weeks (now it's 898.5 oct 9 ).
The crash described, and the screenshot posted, happens only with this 898.x, not with the other ones.
The other issues happens with older TWS version two, so this is not the main problem I think. In fact I'm using a lot of NT instances on a lot of machines, and let them do "heavy" jobs, this is not helping I think...

I appreciate this discussion, as I am having problems with NT that their Customer Support is absolutely no help in solving.

I can't use NT with IB. It runs PERFECTLY with Zen-Fire trading futures. But it stalls immediately when trying to trade stocks with IB. I've used the "NT supported" TWS version (v895.3) with no difference. It simply does NOT work.

I have a Quad-Core (1.8ghz), Windows Vista 64-bit, 4 gb RAM machine, with two 23" Samsung monitors and an NVidia dual video card. I've read that the NVidia card could be the problem, but I've updated the drivers to no avail. I'm wondering if the digital side of the card is the problem. The analog side is fine with Zen-Fire.

NT says the problem is with the Vista 64 OS, but others are using it without problems.

I'm very frustrated with NT. I want a good, solid piece of software with CHART TRADING.

I just read on another website where RAY (CEO of NT) wrote on Oct. 7th, 2009, that NT7 is still months away from release. I doubt I'll wait.

Any suggestions will be MUCH appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Zephyr

I assume when you refer to digital/analog you are talking about a video card with 1 DVI output and 1 VGA.. that will not affect your software in any way (other than the inherent color discrepancy between the two formats)

Can you trade forex through ninja/TWS, or does nothing work?

You can try loading ninja and TWS in a virtual machine and see if it works there (virtualbox is free VM program all you need is a winxp cd).. or try setting both programs to 'compatibility mode' in vista 64.. also make sure your API connector settings are right in TWS and in ninja
