I am thinking of using Ninjatrader to automate my strategy, spoken to a few consultants who quoted me on programming the code but i wanted to hear from other users who used NT in the past for autotrading what they think of the program. Can NT do what is says it can?

It's all a matter of how good your code is. I autotrade with it every day.

I trade with Ninja everyday day. Get a good consultant, everyone in a while problems can crop up in a auto strat and it is better if the code handles them then just dumping out leaving you in a position. Even a good coder without trading experience can make mistakes. The code may run well for a while but bad coding may cost you more in the end.

Any advice on consultants? I contacted the recommended consultants at NT's site and managed to find only a few that really new what they were saying. I know my trading but i have no programming knowledge so some help in finding a good developer will be much appreciated.

Make sure they understand the order book and the orders you will be using.

I agree with @fluxsmith and @traderwerks, it's possible, but you must be careful.
It's easy for a newbie to build a small strategy with the integrated Wizard, and then modify few things in the code directly. It will work for some backtests.
But for something which will run live, with real cash, you can't do that.
For example, the "Managed Approach" for orders must be avoid, the "ATM Strategy Methods" too, if you want something reliable, ...
And there is a zillion of other things to know in NT automated strategies, which are not in the documentation, that's why writing "good" NT strategies is, IMVHO, much much more difficult than writing NT indicators.

An important issue to evaluate an autotrading strategy is backtesting, optimizing and forwarding I suggest to read this thread

Don't trust too much NT strategies with a good backtesting results; you'd better sim trade, replay, and compare the results.

I'm curious about the experiences behind this statement. I haven't had any problem with the managed approach, if I don't need more than it offers. That said, I don't use it because I like to have both a fixed initial stop and a trailing stop with a triggering threshold, which the managed approach can't offer.

I've also seen handing the strategy's order management off to an ATM work effectively, except that it can't be backtested.
