If someone tech savy could give an informed opinion to this issue I'd be really appreciative.
Is my below issue due to inadequate PC, Kaspersky interferance, slow internet, or limitations of NT8 platform

When I open a previously saved new work space it can take 1 - 2 mins to load.
When closing workspaces (and saving) my task manager goes into :"Not responding"...on and off for 1- 2 minutes until closing.See attached shots. This "Not responding" is what concerns me, alongside the long shut down, which kind of freezes NT8, until workspace has shut down. Every 3-4 weeks, NT8 will actually shut down totally

This happens (both) if I have 6 workspaces open and close one or only 2 open, and close one. CPU can spike from 15% to 80% or more. Memory varies between 4500mb - 5500 mb.

Each workspace contains 5-7 charts.
Tick charts 40 days loaded
Day/ Min (240 min upwards) 365 days loaded

I run latest NT8 platform version with Kinetik
Kaspersky application control is set to "Trusted" for Nt8
Have done a complete Kaspersky scan of PC and no issues.

Could the PC specs be a problem?
Intel i7-4790k 4.00ghz (yes it is an older PC)
16 Ram
SSD Harddrive (30% full)

Thank YOU for any feedback

I haven't tried what I'm linking below; but in the past, I've had to do things like what's listed in the link in order to 'fix' NT.

Thank you Userque,

I should have mentioned that I do 'own' a NT8 licence.
Some of what is in those links I implement, semi-regularly.

There is a mention of not working from workspaces but from templates. That would be out of the question for some of my strategies.

I wonder if my PC specs are a significant part of the problem

Check with NT support ... they can better analyze your specific situation via log files.

unless you are downloading a bunch of pirated software/movies/etc or visiting pron or shady websites, there is no need to use antivirus software other than defender built in to windows

I agree with @userque, as a first step. NT support is good, and they do know their platform.

Also, it is a known issue that sometimes poorly written indicators can slow down NT8 drastically, which NT Support probably will mention. You didn't say what is on your charts, but in general, less is better, and if you have a problem indicator running it can slow things down a lot.

You may just have too much going on, with many workspaces, many charts, and charts with a lot of data. Cut back what you are running and see what the result is.

Your PC probably is also a limiting factor. I'm not up on the current recommended hardware for NT8, but in general, more is better. NT doesn't really like to say this, but the platform, for all its merits, is a resource hog, and you may be asking it to do a lot, given the computer you have. When you talk to NT support, this is a question you should raise.

-----------------

You did ask for someone with an informed opinion, which is not exactly me.... I left NT years ago when it became clear that my "older" PC was not going to cut it with the platform any more, and I knew that there are alternatives that it can run well (Sierra Chart) -- not a knock on NT and not really a plug for SC, just explaining why I am not in a position to be of that much help.

But I can make suggestions, from a technical perspective, about how to find out where the problem likely is.

You first start with a simple case of one workspace, one chart, minimal data (really, minimal -- a few days) and no indicators. That's your benchmark. Now start adding things in, slowly, one at a time. The "things" you add are each of the elements you are asking the platform, and your computer, to handle: more stuff on the charts, more data, more charts, more workspaces. As you add more back, you will be able to see the things you need to know: Do you have a problem indicator? Are you loading too much data? Are you running too many charts and workspaces? Whatever the issue, this gradual adding back will tell you your answer.

Then you can look at whether you can live with a scaled-back total setup (perhaps fewer charts, maybe not going back as far on charts if you don't need to look that far back all the time, etc.) or whether you should look into buying a faster PC, and make more informed decisions.

A simpler version of this same idea would simply be to knock back anything you don't actually need and use all the time (how much data, how many charts) and see if this makes a difference.

Generally, people seem not to want to do this kind of simple, methodical approach to debugging a problem, but I can tell you from having a long career in finding and debugging technical issues, that step-by-step is the way to find anything. It's also boring. Sorry. It will give you the answer if you do it.

And good luck.

Bob.

@sienna: it looks like a bad indicator somewhere, Ninja should not use 100% of one core, use 5 GB of RAM and have this kind of disk activity (unless during backtests/optimizations).
I would suggest to open the Windows Performance Monitor, select the NinjaTrader.exe process and check why you have this kind of disk activity, which files are asking for this kind of throughput (analyzing the CPU/RAM usage is not as easy to do).

Additionally to what @bobwest suggests,

You can also use the Utilization Monitor, and performance tips:

How big is the "..Documents\NinjaTrader 8\workspaces\_Workspaces.xml" file? Mine is 37 KB (1 workspace). This file could be the problem (reading & updating). I stopped using workspaces after persistent problems. Never had a chart (definition) from one workspace come up in another workspace??

What you can do:

1. delete the "_workspaces.xml" file. It will be re-created automatically again after you startup NT. Now all old mess is gone from the file.
If this helps you can do it regularly (after making changes because old definitions will stay in the file and the file will grow too big).

2. Try using just one workspace for awhile just to see how it goes and to locate if the multiple workspaces are the problem (which I think it is). (You must execute point 1 for a clean workspace.xml file or else it's of no use).

Performance problems caused by indicator(s) can be tracked down as described in post #8. Good luck!

That's a lot of data. Just for comparison I have one workspace with 7 charts. They only load one day's worth of data, although they're usually running tick replay. Every time you open up the charts are going to refresh and load up the cached data, and that will take a few minutes. So make sure you're only loading up data as far back as you look at or that your indicators need. It's also common for the data cache to get screwed up. Deleting the db and cache folders can force it to rebuild things. Even then it's still going to take a few minutes every time you load up, and that's not unusual.
