Im curious to know why NT would connect to other IP addresses, sorry if its a silly question.
May be I need to post this in NT forums.

Fat Tails View Post
I just started NinjaTrader and had a look at my monitoring tool to see what it does.

Even prior to establishing any connection with a data provider, NinjaTrader is heavily involved in setting up between 3 and 6 simultaneous connections. How can I know what it is doing?

These are the connections

-> cdn-87-248-217-254.frf.llnw.net
-> hans-moleman.w3.org (2x)
-> 204.8.241.145
-> 64.74.223.35
-> unknown

(1) cdn-87-248-217-254.frf.llnw.net is a host located in Frankfurt and run by Limelight Networks. Limelight Networks is a content deliverer who allows for sending files via the public internet.

(2) If I check for hans-moleman.w3.org, I find an IP address 128.3052.37, which belongs to World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), so probably nothing wrong here.

(3) The IP address 204.8.241.145 is related to the following host names:

Wiki.fxprogrammers.com
Negociação de Divisas por FXCM
http:/www. fxcmexpo. com

All these sites belong to FXCM. One of the two data providers of Kinetick is FXCM, just strange that an internet connection to FXCM is established prior to connecting to Kinetick EOD.

(4) The IP address 64.74.223.35 is operated by Internap Network Services Corporation in Bellevue, Washington. It is also linked to the domain fclink.com, which is for sale.

Is there anybody who has checked NinjaTrader for establishing internet connections and give me an explanation of this?

@NinjaTrader_Ray,

Could you please explain IPs #1, #3, and #4 brought forth in post #61, specifically:

cdn-87-248-217-254.frf.llnw.net
204.8.241.145
64.74.223.35

Thanks in advance.

I do not think that there is anything mysterious in NinjaTrader connecting to various IP addresses:

Observed Connections

If you start NinjaTrader, it connects to

(1) 72.232.148.211 Layered Technologies, Plano, Texas -> hosting www.ninjatrader-support2.com
(2) 95.140.224.239 Limelight Networks, United Kingdom -> file delivery via internet
(3) hostingc1.megawebservers.com InternetNamesForBusiness.com -> domain registration
(4) 204.8.242.87 FXCM, New York, NY -> data server for FXCM

Once you connect to Kinetick EOD:

(5) 66.112.156.210 Data Transmission Network Corporation, Omaha
(6) www2.7ticks.com Interactive Data Company, Bedford, MA ->

When I download historical daily data, NinjaTrader connects to:

(7) cluster0.interquote.com (hosted on 66.112.156.210) -> data download from DTN Telvent
(8) cluster3.interquote.com (hosted on 66.112.156.210) -> data download from DTN Telvent

Evaluation

(1) Layered Technologies is IT provider which offers managed hosting solutions. NinjaTrader stock, futures and forex charting software and online trading platform. and www.ninjatrader-support2.com are hosted by Layered Technologies. Managed Hosting, Cloud Hosting, Dedicated Server Hosting: Layered Tech
This connection is required for licenses check when NinjaTrader starts up. Without the license check, you can only run NinjaTrader in SIM mode.

(2) Limelight Networks is a content deliverer who allows for sending files via the public internet.

(3) InternetNames for Business is a domain registration service. Internet Names for Business

(4) FXCM is a data provider for FOREX data.

(5) DTN Telvent is a data provider. Depending on your instrument settings for FOREX instruments, NinjaTrader will download FOREX data either from FXCM or from DTN Telvent, when you are connected to Kinetick. As I have elected the DTN FOREX feed in the instrument settings, I am receiving data via DTN.
Telvent | Smart Information for a Sustainable World

(6),(7),(8) Interactive Data is a market data provider for Reuters, eSignal, Bloomberg and (as shown here) Kinetick.
Interactive Data: Products and Services: Pricing Services: Global Listed Markets Pricing

Conclusion

There are really no secrets. Also you can control via a connection tool that NinjaTrader downloads data as required, but does not upload data.

NinjaTrader established connection to the internet for well defined purposes. Obviously it can not work without these connections.

-> license verification for NinjaTrader and 3rd party products
-> file transfer
-> domain registration
-> data download

Nothing scary.

@Fat Tails,

One more thing: how did you get a list of IPs that NT connects to? I would like to learn more about these stuff. I guess my question is which programs/software (preferably free/public domain) one can use to monitor this kind of communications? Believe me, your detailed post (a few posts back) has helped me tremendously with regarding trusting NinjaTrader; but I am not quite sure about other software that I am using; my office back home (i'm visiting the State at the moment) employs quite a few one-of custom application that we contracted "off-shore" programmer from other countries to write for us. Kinda scary.

Many thanks

I used a free tool called Moo0 ConnectionWatcher.

Moo0 ConnectionWatcher (Free) - Check Your Network Connections

I then looked up the IP addresses via a WHOIS tool.
