definitely use the memory hack to up it to > 2GB RAM memory barrier via the LARGEADDRESSAWARE option from editbin (tool from Visual Studio 2010/2008). That helps out a lot and is first thing I do after upgrading to latest NT 6.5.1000.x version (any update will blow away the memory patch so you'll need to re-apply it).

Re: NT 7 - its still beta so I don't trust it fully for real live trading yet. Although I truly like the auto-merge capability of NT 7. Make sure you have that capability in a new platform - merging contracts manually via NT 6.5 is such a time waster.

I downloaded and installed SC about 3 weeks ago, but got busy and never activated it. On Monday I sent an email requesting activation and they replied that my 2 week trial had expired and I needed to buy the program. I got mad and replied asking them how they figured I used my 2 week trial when it wasn't even activated? They replied stating that they had extended my trial. I was still mad and replied that I had already removed it and wouldn't need the trial, thanks anyway. That said, I should probably swallow my pride and try it because it is so reasonable. Before I take such drastic measures, may I ask if it has ATM capabilities and can you create custom paint bar studies? Thank you.

Just now read this thread...

Vegafoster, yes they have the ATM capabilities. Sierra calls it Attached Orders.

Sierra support can occasionally be curt, but they are very responsive. Tact goes a long way with them.

Before I went with my current broker, I did extensive research into all my options. One option which was near the top of my list was Velocity futures with free X_Trader. Could be a good option for those using Multicharts.

I have a automated strategy programmed in NT also, but it's no problem to reprogram this in another program.

I'm looking for a replacement, please if you have any ideas.

Thanks

MetalTrade, I too have been using NT7b20 only for strategy development at this point. I am interested in a platform (other than NT) that will support automated trading of my system. Also, have heard some things about virtual machines so would appreciate if people have opinions on how to get that going too. Cheers,

Here is what I use on my Win7 x64 machine: VMware Player: Run Windows 7, Chrome OS - Free Download for a Virtual PC
I've been using it a few years now and quite pleased with it. They also have a utility that will create a virtual machine image of any existing installation, so you could clone your current OS and run two separate instances at once. You'll need a lot of HD space though, but you can store the virtual machine image anywhere, even on an external or network drive.
I always use this when I upgrade my OS. I create a virtual machine image of the old PC, then do fresh install of my new one. Then I can still have access to my old computer from within my new installation.

You can also take a look at VirtualBox, which is also free. On of the advantage of VirtualBox vs VMPlayer is its ability to run on Linux and MacOSX.
I've using VirtualBox for several years without big problems with it. That was not the same story with VMWare entry level products, but it's maybe much better now.

Thanks Slipnot, This is important but what I'm really looking for is someone who is using VM for an automated trading system as well as an alternate for NT that I could use to autotrade.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, if you just want to use one PC, I wouldn't trade live automated within a VM. I suspect that you may get occasional tick delays, and depending on your data vendor, occasional disconnects. I think this is when the OS gives a little more priority to your real PC than the VM, and holds up network receive or whatever. I may be wrong on that, but I suspect it.

What does work very well, on a high spec PC, is to run all your live automated on your real PC, and do all your backtesting, development etc on Ninja in a VM.

Unfortunately I don't have experience of running an alternative to NT.

I do not agree, I run parallels on a mac pro 8 core xeon cpu's. I don't get any tick delays or disconnects.

In the virtual machine you set that you give priority to the VM instead of the host system. On the other hand, I'm talking about the host os being MAC OS X SNOW LEOPARD, the most advanced true 64bit OS based on the FreeBSD, a Unix compliant open source linux distro. Rock solid and razor blade fast.
