Hello everyone,

I'm a long time user of Ninjatrader for day trading. I know some people hate it and claims it's unstable, but it seems to work fine with me. Since I've had access to a few custom indicators in NT7, I've stayed with it, but I really don't depend on them and am now considering if it may be worth moving on.

For now, I'm simulator trading, but I will be going live in January and as such I'm thinking if it might be worth going over to NT8. My trading needs are simple: Minute and volume charts of one symbol only (ES). Also, I'd like to execute my trades from charts.

So, my main concern then is stability, speed and ease of use.

Any thoughts or advice? Is NT 8 faster? Is it easy to start using, i.e., similar user interface?

Thanks in advance!

I'm also interested in broker recommendations for daytrading ES. In the past I've used Ninja through Interactive Brokers, but I'm now considering Ninjatrader Brokerage among others.

Thanks.

if you are trading in sim, why not do your own research and trade in sim on nt8 until jan, or until you made a decision.

I probably will, but I'm not so technological savvy and was hoping to benefit from some of the more experienced users on this board.

nothing replaces your own experience, 8 is nice it is better organized and streamlined, but i think 7 is more solid, i do not use 8 for me it is not ready yet, but i think it never will be.

but for your set up you may find that 8 works just fine, and there is no difference.

I'll throw in my two cents. I think you should test out 8 in sim first before you go live. 8 seems to have different settings in their back testing / market replay engine, so the performance results will different from 7. In some cases depending on your strategy this difference may be very significant.

While I have never got a straight answer from NinjaTrader regarding the accuracy or reliability of the market replay in 7 v 8, what I can tell you is this:

1. If you can beat both systems handily you should be in good shape to go live.
2. If you can only beat one of the two (7 or 8) but not both, you may need to evaluate things further.

There may be some further information you can dig up regarding if one is more liberal or conversation, or if one is more realistic vs. the other.

Worse case, you lose a little bit of time testing out 8, if you are discretionary trading and not programming, migrating to 8 should not be too bad. They changed a good bit of their code base so if you are like me and an algo guy, reprogramming everything is a bit more of a pain.

Best case, you learn from doing a few days testing and realize that maybe you were or weren't ready to go live yet. In my opinion there is very little risk with this approach, vs. jumping in live first.

Good Luck.

Ian

I'd recommend the move to NT8, but based on your use case you probably won't notice much of a difference.

What do you mean with NT 7 being more solid?

Appreciate the advice, everyone.

I'm downloading NT8 now and look forward to testing it.
