I am still on 7. The chart trader action buttons are TERRIBLE. Too small ,narrow and stuck in the upper right. No mouse space above the buttons. Not customizable to size. The video's Ninjatrader puts out show a small chart and enlarged action buttons. Very misleading and found in the help guide as well. How can a active trader quickly find the action button they use? This has been on going for over a year. Many platforms fail in this area. NT7 has acceptable size and squarish buttons with pointer space above the buttons to safely wait. Make this customizable as to SIZE.

I am on NT8 for more than a year and absolutely love it. It’s stable and the tabs are great.
@xtrader, this an old thread.

I have to say, loading up NT7 feels archaic when compared to running NT8.. the improvements in terms of duplicating a tab/window, ability to select instruments more easily on charts, dark themes, all these things that you'd think would be in a 1.0 release but only came about in NT8 - really make it much more usable.

I was trying to make a chart dark in NT7 last week - man what a hassle. And I still wasn't satisfied with the result. NT8 dark theme (the default one whatever it is called - looks great... they understand that you can't go black because of glare, but chose a really nice almost black colour)

That said, I think most people are still on NT7 because of the requirement that you need to throw out your old indicators and strategies with the bathwater on every NT version upgrade.

I am still using NT7 because 8 still has huge performance issues. I used to code allot in nt7, but not so much any more,,,, Not really looking for the holy-grail any more, its a bullshit pie in the sky endeavor. I trade to make money the hard way ...
Good old fashion hard work identifying support and resistance breakouts and breakdowns, profile, volume +++more(mental stability), and need a simple hi stability platform for that. Even nt7 has so many bugs that i am considering going to tradestation and just forget about the lifetime NT7 license.

Regards to all and good trading,
Michael S

I think the NJT staff actually knows me by first name as I've reported my fair share of NT 8 bugs to them. Haha.

Having said that, I don't know how you dudes can still use NT7. That is an exercise in patience.

Once my software got coded to multi-core NT8 which is written for this the platform has worked fine. I watch the task master performance tab and all my previous software ran on one core. Now it is distributed as 4 as designed. Too much look back cleaner charts solved a lot of performance issues.

it's for the same kind of people that prefer to use MT4 over MT5.. people who don't want to re-code

Started NT running v7 and intermittently had all kinds of issues, little and big. I don't run a lot of indicators and only a few charts keeping it simple.

Upgraded to v8 as soon as it was available for download and only saw a few minor problems early on.

I love v8 although as mentioned above I wish the DOM was more customizable.

For the price and level of technology NT is great stuff.

The multi-threads and multi-core programming debugging has got to suck though.

For me, NT8 have been a huge disappointment. I upgraded because of promises of improved performance, but for me, NT7 was much better.

Lately I've been having issues with charts not loading properly or taking forever to load. Never an issue with NT7.

I never understood the haters on NT7 as I absolutely loved it, but I could understand it if they were talking about NT8.

The only improvement for me is the ability to have charts set up with multiple tabs Excel-style.

Hi Howard,

Sorry to hear running NT8 is going down hill on you. You didn't mention the hardware or software setup you are running on but one thing you can do right off is bring up your windows task manager and verify what your cpu, hd, and internet connection loads are. If any of them are high you can isolate who is doing it. If you can verify that NT8 is maxing out your resources in task manager that is a good starting point.

Go through the normal divide and conquer process by saving your trading setup to a test setup that you can use to pare down by removing indicators and reducing the amount of data that your charts load until you find what is causing your resource drain.

Just to make things simpler I am pasting in NT8 minimum and recommended system requirements for your easy reference just in case. Below that is a listing for system optimization.

Best of luck to Howard. Sorry you are having problems.

BTW: My wife and I traveled all over Norway a couple of years ago traveling all the way up to Skarsvag and Honningsvag. We loved every minute of it. Beautiful, beautiful, country. Absolutely stunning scenery everywhere.

Minimum PC Requirements
Your PC must meet the minimum requirements listed below to run NinjaTrader 8
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 w/ Platform Update, Windows Server 2008 R2 or later

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit or 64-bit processor

2GB RAM

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5

(pre-installed on most PC’s and can be downloaded here: Microsoft .NET Framework)

Screen resolution of 1024 x 768

DirectX10 compatible graphics card highly recommended

Recommended PC Specifications
NinjaTrader 8 was designed to take full advantage of modern PC architecture. To achieve the highest possible level of performance, NinjaTrader 8 will utilize all available CPU cores and additional memory resources. Depending on your actual usage with NinjaTrader, you may need more or less resources than the average user. Additional memory will be of direct benefit when running strategy optimizations, and the amount of additional memory needed is proportional to the number of CPU cores available.

2 (GHz) or faster quad core 64-bit processor

8 GB RAM

DirectX 10 compatible graphics card

SSD Hard Drive
===========================

Performance Factors
There are many variables that contribute to overall performance of the NinjaTrader application.

Different connectivity providers (market data vendors and broker technologies) that NinjaTrader supports vary in their level of real-time data service. For example, providers who deliver unfiltered tick data (submit all market ticks) will impose heavier processing load than a vendor that provides throttled market data.

The load you place on the NinjaTrader application (running 200 charts will consume more processing power than running only 20 charts)

The capability of your PC hardware (are you running a brand new state of the art machine or a 4 year old PC with limited RAM)

A single bad 'setting' can cause performance issues and a single active Third Party script can cause general performance issue. See the Understanding the impact of installing Add-Ons section.

Note: High memory usage may not be related to poor performance. It takes computer resources to figure out when to free up memory that is no longer being used. So, rather than using resources to constantly determine what memory to free up, the system will determine the best time to free up memory when it is needed.

Optimize Performance
The following are some suggestions that can help you fine tune your NinjaTrader installation to run optimally.

1.
Close any unneeded open workspaces. Although a workspace may not be in view, it does still use system resources when open.
2.
Exit any unneeded Charts, SuperDOMs, Market Analyzers, etc. in your open workspace(s). Additionally, if you have multiple tabs in any windows that you do not need, exit out of those.
3.
Ensure that every indicator applied is using the Calculate setting of On price change or On bar close. There is no benefit to using On each tick unless the indicator deals with volume or tick counting.
4.
Remove unneeded indicators from Charts, Market Analyzers, and SuperDOMs.
5.
Reduce the Days to Load on Charts and on Market Analyzer indicator columns. This can be especially effective with any tick-based series.
6.
Use Tick Replay sparingly and only when needed. For example, a simple Pivot indicator which just uses the current and previous daily price levels would not see any advantage from using tick replay. In contrast, a Volume profile indicator which relies on the exact sequence of trades to calculate various levels would greatly benefit from using tick replay.
7.
Remove unneeded drawing objects. Especially over time as you have more drawing objects on your charts the performance can decline since there is more to render. NTEIGHT-12682
8.
Workspaces which have a single or fewer number of instruments are unable to take advantage of multi-core processors. For example, having 30 charts with the same instrument will not perform as well as 30 charts of different instruments on a multi-core processor. Reducing the number of windows with the same instrument can increase performance. Alternatively, workspaces that have one or only a few instruments would benefit from a processor with a higher clock speed.
9.
Reduce the amount of charts with Global crosshairs enabled.
10.
Set crosshair to Draw cursor only. Systems with less powerful GPUs can benefit from the reduced rending which results in this change. This setting is within the chart’s properties.
11.
Reset and clear history of your simulation account. A large amount of simulated trades can grow the size of your data base. If you do not need this historical information, completing this step will free up more resources.
12.
Disable market recording for Playback and Record live data as historical if it’s not needed.
13.
Notes: "Save chart data as historical" should only be checked if are using a connectivity provider that does NOT provide historical data. Many of the most popular futures and forex instruments are recorded to our servers and available to download for Playback.
14.
The "Show Volume Text" property in the SuperDOM's Volume column can impact PC performance and the speed of rendering objects in the SuperDOM. This property is disabled by default to minimize the performance impact, and when disabled, you can hover your mouse cursor over any Volume row to view the exact volume at that row.
15.
Some computer configurations provide two graphics cards (integrated vs. dedicated). To get the most out of chart rendering performance, enable a high-performance dedicated graphic processor.
16.
Use a hardwired internet connection. Wireless and satellite connections can drop packets or have a poor latency. If a low latency connection is not available, a VPS can be a great solution.
17.
Set your connection to connect on start up. This will make it so your workspace only needs to load once, rather than once when you start NinjaTrader and a second time when new data is download after you connect.
18.
Reduce the number of applications running on your system.
19.
Windows search indexing can also place an extra burden on your processor when running NinjaTrader, negatively impacting performance. It is recommended to exclude the folders listed below from indexing, as well, which can be done via the Windows Control Panel.
C:\Users\User\Documents\NinjaTrader 8
C:\Program Files (x86)\NinjaTrader 8
