I wish I knew how to start a poll... I didn't see one here...
So, also, not wishing to step on anyone's toes...
Could someone start a poll?

Thanks!

@BarefootHank2017,

Found this post in another thread:

"You can do it when starting a new thread, enabling the poll option."

After all, it's what you learn AFTER you know it all, that counts!

Switched to NT8 the second I could which was the second wave of beta testers. Head and shoulders night and day difference from NT7. Not even fair to compare them. Think horse and buggy and modern vehicle. Yes you can still get where you are going with the former but the latter does everything so much better faster etc.

For a poll click on "Thread tools". Not sure if you have to be an Elite member or not..... @Big Mike, please is this the case? Thank you.

Ron

I am straddling at the moment - I have not yet fully committed to leaving NT7 but I now try to spend most of my time on NT8.

This is not without frustration though. I have complained a few times of various errors/bugs/instability issues which I would not expect of a General Release version, and certainly are not present on NT7.

I think TheWizard is right, you need to activate the Poll option when you start a new thread

Please what kind of issues are you finding in NT8?

Other than old workspaces which I recreate and all is fine again I really don't have much in the way of issues and I run NT8 ~23.75 hours a day save for doing a backup and rebooting trade machine during the week. Last issue I had was for the default Alerts I set up. I used the email share twice for sending an email to me and the other instance to send me a text message through Sprint my cell phone carrier because I get those right away. The email address service with my cell number for a text message. NT8 doesn't seem to like it when I use the same share service twice like that and it keep throwing an exception. So I switched to a twitter acct for the instant notification and email combo and it now works fine. This was back on Jan 24 2017 and I have not tested this again so maybe it was addressed.

I sent a video regarding this but got a bad Ninja rep that never did anything about it. So I have to workup the energy to see it through, hammering away at them with videos etc. @NinjaTrader

Are you running any beta software please? Any antivirus software?

Ron

  • Some are documented here.
  • Date/time for Market Replay disappeared. NT support couldn't figure that one out so I had to reinstall to fix
  • Again Market Replay behaves erratically when I'm using Jigsaw DOM. I need to contact them about this.
  • Some odd issues with Strategy Builder: you want to build a simple condition such as Close[0]>Open[0] and yet, when you save it, you get some strange DefaultInput keyword that does not make sense. (see attached pic)
Yet, when you look at the code, the code is right. Plus, the issue is not always present.

The NT support person insists this behavior is by design but it's unlikely to be the case, I think it's a cop-out.

I do have an Antivirus product but I don't believe it impacts any of these issues.

one of the bigger problems I've seen are "memory leaks". especially when using "tick replay".

@Sim22 posted some tips that are really helpful:

Quoting
Notice to all Downloaders

As at NT8.0.4, Feb 2017, Ninja Trader LLC has been struggling to contain errors and memory leaks on some indicators. It may not be the code itself but something internal within NT8. It seems to be due to the multi-threaded nature of NT8, ie. multiple cores being used to make calculations. In regards to 'memory leaks', I refer to NT8 sharply escalating it's use of memory, causing NT8 to crash eventually. This is often caused by objects in code being created in one thread and the indicator goes looking for it in another thread.

Please be patient and use indicators carefully, especially on tick replay.

The way to monitor/help your NT8 is thus:

1. Hold down Ctrl & Alt and then press Delete. This will open up your task manager. You can observe NT8's memory usage. If you see NT8 memory sharply increase then you may have a 'memory leak'. You should shut it down by clicking on NT8 in the task manager and then 'End Task'. Keep in mind this will not save your latest workspace.

2. Keep your 'Log' tab open to see for any warnings. They will usually appear in orange. If you have an OnRender DirectX warning then chances are NT8 will have a memory leak and will crash a period of time later. Shut down as above.

3. I always open NT8 now with ONLY a simple workspace (all else should be closed) with only a couple of naked minute/tick charts on it. Connect to your broker, let the data load, then open your complicated workspaces. This seems to solve most memory leaks. The change from Historical state to Realtime seems to cause NT8 some grief with the OnRender method.

I do feel that NT8 has kept us in the dark with communication, so that's why I'm giving you some tips that work for me. I'm interested if you have any other ideas that work for you

also about antivirus programs. I always make sure that ninja trader is "excluded" from any scans

Worth adding that having a quad core processor is highly recommended. My problems with memory leaks and workspaces virtually disappeared when I upgraded from an i5 to the latest i7 (and the memory usage even when all is running normally is actually smaller with the i7).

I couldn't imagine going back to NT7.
