For me, NT8 have been a huge disappointment. I upgraded because of promises of improved performance, but for me, NT7 was much better.

Lately I've been having issues with charts not loading properly or taking forever to load. Never an issue with NT7.

I never understood the haters on NT7 as I absolutely loved it, but I could understand it if they were talking about NT8.

The only improvement for me is the ability to have charts set up with multiple tabs Excel-style.

Do you run NT7 and NT8 simultaneously?

I do for months, and both work flawlessly for me.
But when I open NT7 before NT8, that day NT8 will crash very soon in trading (or the charts won't load properly), and that is a fact, every day when I do it.
But when I open, connect and load templates in NT8 first and then in NT7, everything works top notch whole day.

I have switched to NT8. Even with an old computer (with have the requirements), NT8 succed to launch. If I optimize a strategy, it could be long or crash

However, when I find something bugging, I just send a message to the support and always have an answer.
The lifetime version of NT8 gives me the most tools I need.

I'm still on NT7 lifetime+multiuser license. I use and modded a bunch of indicators and currently don't wish to go through the hassle of trying to update all of them to NT8 from what I've heard. I'm also 'grandfathered' to still be able to use NT7 with AMP and cqg feed.

Hi Howard,

Sorry to hear running NT8 is going down hill on you. You didn't mention the hardware or software setup you are running on but one thing you can do right off is bring up your windows task manager and verify what your cpu, hd, and internet connection loads are. If any of them are high you can isolate who is doing it. If you can verify that NT8 is maxing out your resources in task manager that is a good starting point.

Go through the normal divide and conquer process by saving your trading setup to a test setup that you can use to pare down by removing indicators and reducing the amount of data that your charts load until you find what is causing your resource drain.

Thank you, mbondiett!

NT8 is not THAT bad. It's just that I'm experiencing issues that I did not have with NT7.

I also talked to a trader friend of mine which have a complete system developed for NT7. He says there's no reason he'll switch to NT8 now and in his opinion it's too unstable for serious live trading.

BTW: My wife and I traveled all over Norway a couple of years ago traveling all the way up to Skarsvag and Honningsvag. We loved every minute of it. Beautiful, beautiful, country. Absolutely stunning scenery everywhere.

Wow. Glad to hear that. I currently live in Oslo, but I sincerely hope people visiting get to see something else as it's truly not representative of Norway as a whole.

Minimum PC Requirements

Recommended PC Specifications

I meet both the minimum and recommended requirements. I bought a new dedicated laptop with 16 GB SDRAM + i7 Quad Qore processor. So I think my hardware should be sufficient.

Thanks for that tip, S Trader.

Actually, I don't have NT7 installed on this computer. I haven't used it since I made the switch.

Also, when you open NT8, firstly connect it without charts (blank template), and when it is connected open your charts.
Every week download hisorical data for your instruments.

Thank you for the tip. Does this make a big difference? It's the first time I hear this one.

Exactly how do I do this? I have two workspaces, but one is for weekend review and always closed intraday. The other is my main workspace and always open. Do I need to close it every time I close NT then?

Other than that, I think I do most of the obvious tricks:

Intraday charts = short lookback period (5-7 days). Tick charts as little as 3 days, but I have only 2 tick/volume charts.

Indicators set to "Calculate on Bar Close".

I don't use a lot of indicators, but a few more than I did with NT7.

Best regards and thanks.

Howard

Yes it makes difference.
I use only 2-3 good coded indicators (Gomi or Lizardtrader), but when I setup NT8 to connect and open my active workspaces automatically upon starting, charts sometimes won't load properly or it takes forever (freezes chart) to load.

So, how to do it:

1. Setup NT so that when you open it you connect it manually to data feed
2. In Workspaces menu create new workspace Untitled (it would be blank)
3. So now you have your workspaces and one Untitled (blank, it wont have any charts)

Exiting:
1. close all your workspaces (save them) so that the only one left active is Untitled
2. close NT, don't need to disconnect it

Startup:
1. Open NT, now it is unconnected, and only blank Untitled workspace is open automatically (no charts)
2. connect to data
3. when it is connected now you open your workspaces

When I do it this way, whatever heavy workspaces/data I have, it loads in seconds, no problems ever.

Thank you!

So, I tested your method and took the time. Here are the results. Each step counted from 0:

1. 7 seconds to open.

2. 14 seconds to connect to IQ Feed.

3. 20 seconds to open 30-second chart.

4. 40 seconds to open the final charts.

So, a total of 40 seconds to load everything.

I did a second test using this method and it took 1 minute and 20 seconds for everything to load. The 1-minute/30-second chart loaded fairly fast, but it was waiting for the 5-minute chart (no indicators and only 15 days of data).

Results using auto-connect and auto-open Workspace:

42 seconds to load everything.

I did a second test with auto-connect:

This time my charts loaded in 20 seconds, BUT, the indicators didn't load. So I had to use "Refresh Ninjascript" for a total of 45 seconds.

To me, there does not seem to be a big difference between the two methods on average.

Indicators not loading and disappearing is one of the things I've had trouble with. And I've read many people say the same thing.

Another big thing was the cross hair. I know it was lagging when I started using NT8, but fixed shortly after (and people had been using NT8 for a year at that point).

So:

- Lagging crosshair (fixed now though)
- Longer time to load data
- Not always able to refresh data (says...Loading forever and nothing happen)
- Indicators not loading/disappearing

But even if the method above is a solution - it IS a disadvantage if you can't use NT8 the way it's meant to be, but have to work around it with various fixes to make it work.

Auto-connect and auto-open workspaces should be a basic requirement, IMO.

Bottom line for me is that the only improvement I've experienced is the ability to tile charts as tabs Excel style.

You are absolutely right
