I use NinjaTrader for trading futures and also some features of Thinkorswim. Specifically, the latest iteration of TOS added a candle type called ATR Bars (Average True Range Bars). Described simply, it takes the length of the chart you have selected, calq's the atr, then automatically plots each bar based on that calq'ed range.
My question is this. I have tried to duplicate this in NinjaTrader without success. Has anyone seen code that would allow for the automatic calculation of ATR then create the bars based on the result; including the wicks and tails?
It is immensely helpful in my Crude, ES, and other trending trades.
Tradingview has ATR based Renko/Kagi/PnF charts, BUT...
...the ATR doesn't dynamically update. It builds the entire chart history based on the current ATR, and locks in that ATR for bar calculation purposes for future bars. The only way I use this ATR function is to calibrate an unfamiliar market.
ah yeah I was thinking before that would be useful because I was sick of typing different values in for different symbols.
But for me what would be really interesting to play with is one that actively updates the range, theoretically making you pay less attention to quiet bars and more attention to active ones.
