Hey guys!

Here is a quick video I made showing some of the biggest changes in NT7. I think most of you know I'm not very happy with the development of NT7 in general, so I've been putting it off for quite a while to be honest.

But in the last few days I spent a little time with it, and when it isn't crashing, some of the features are nice and something to look forward to. Of course, the biggest problem with NT has always been its stability, so that remains to be seen as we're still in a private beta at this point.

NinjaTrader 7 beta 6 in the video, the latest available at the time of this post. I briefly cover the continuous contract improvements, the session manager, hot keys, historical bid ask data, and spend most of the video going over the Chart settings and new multiple time frames settings, as well as the new Data Series options for indicators.

Some of these features were available in NT 6.5, but you had to write your own code to accomplish it. It remains to be seen if the NT7 built-in alternative will be superior or not to those implementations, but it looks promising.

One major thing I forgot to go into more detail on in the video: the seamless sessions for multiple contract termination dates. Say for instance you pull up a chart of CL 03-10, you can now load 90 days of data (CL 02-10, CL 01-10, CL 12-09) on one single chart, seamlessly and automagically, as NT knows the start/end contract dates and will merge the data together. It's basically the same as IQfeed and eSignal continuous contracts, but is now available for Zen Fire users.

I'll plan to make another video showing the new strategy analyzer and genetic optimizer, and the new market replay features. That will also give me an opportunity to talk more about the continuous contracts, as that is a key feature in strategy development. Give me some time

I also hope that the NT dev team has learned some hard lessons during all this. NT7 is about two years late, and there has been a bit of a uprising. So, I try to keep that in mind and cut some slack to the dev team. But they've got their work cut out for them...

Mike, I just watched your video briefly... if you want to make a data series transparent, the easiest way is to change it to Line on Close, and then set the color to Transparent. If you leave it as CandleStick you will have to change multiple settings as shown in your video. Just so you know...

Good idea. But, they really need to make this easier. I see this being something a lot of users want to do -- base an indicator off another DataSeries, without that DataSeries being visible. They just need a switch "Visible: yes/no".

Yeah, you are probably not using IQfeed or eSignal would be my guess. Those are only valid on those platforms.

Zen Fire users need to pick the current contract date, ie ES 03-10, and then the new NT7 continuous contract feature will automatically backfill based on the # of days you asked the historical engine to fill. If you load ES 03-10 and ask for 365 days, it will load multiple contracts automatically and seamlessly (ES 12-09, 09-09, 06-09, etc).

Mike,
I'm using N beta 7.0.0.7. How do you get your data connection to persist as demonstrated in your vid? Thanks.

It crashed on me about 10 times back to back this morning out of nowhere. I have no clue what the fix was, I didn't change workspace/templates/charts, I repaired db like 5 times, etc. I even disabled all the workspace and templates, loaded NT with no third party DLL's, and the instant I would connect to Zen Fire it would crash with no useful info in the trace (to me).

Anyway, after 10 times of trying the same crap over and over and over, maybe in a different order or who knows what, it suddenly started working.

Good times.

Ban.

I wouldn't expect a public beta before the middle of Feb at the earliest, I would bet probably closer to early March. As for an official release... knowing these guys, you can count on something like April or May. I find it hard to believe that we have been in private beta for an entire 4 months already without it being released to the public, but they seem to work really slowly. Your guess is as good as anybody's - I don't think they even know themselves.

And really, official release doesn't mean you can use it reliably or that it works. If you can, I would really wait for the .1 release before switching, which could be six months away.

If I wasn't a developer I wouldn't switch now, but I am kind of forced into it a bit.

In beta 7.0.0.7 is there a way to change the default settings for things like Fib Extensions or Fib Retracements? It is easy in 6.5 and was not a problem in the previous beta release unless I'm not remembering correctly. Anyway, I haven't been able to get the changes I make to those drawing tools to stick as default settings. Any clues? Thanks.

Thanks.

I was under the impression this would not work as there isn't really a spot in the database to hold this info. The wording with the pre release was quite confusing in this area. I only used the first beta and decided to wait for whole thing to be released though.

When the dialog comes up, makes your changes, then right click and you will a setting that says "Manage Templates...". Just click on that and save the settings as default.

I wanted to just briefly report that I've loaded 1-year of tick data into the optimizer, using the 32-bit version of NT7, and memory consumption is just 170MB. So great job, I think mainly due to the 256-series lookback restriction that was added.

I had suggested some months ago to Ninjatrader that they give the option of assigning an instrument to a chart without having it plot at all, so that it would not have any effect on the scaling of other indicators. They did not see the merit of that suggestion. Maybe if a few hundred more people asked for it......

Imagine being able to do that for instruments having different time frames, that would be sweet.

DarthTrader, dx27: Assuming you are referring to Gomi's indicators, see this posting about how to get recording of bid and ask data to work.

Also look through the Buy/Sell Volume thread on the Ninjatrader forums.

If you need more help send me a private message.

Latest beta of NT7 is now version 7.007. Not a good idea to keep using Beta 1 if anyone is doing so.

Bid, Ask and Trade info are kept as different time series, with no synchronization between them. So the bid/ask info is pretty much useless... Looks like you're stuck with GomRecorder for persisting bid/ask info for some time :-)

Well it's more than that, the feature is also really required for indicators. I want a simple "enabled/disabled" switch for indicators, like there is for strategies. So I don't have to remove an indicator with 20 plots on it and then add it back just to test something.

For more info on bid/ask you can check

BidAsk Historical... - NinjaTrader Support Forum

and specifically post 10

>> that we simply can not backfill stuff made using onmarketdata() in 7 like we could not in 6.5
Your understanding is correct
.

and post 21

Guys,

Let me outline the opportunities and limitations of the new historical bid/ask feature.
- you could have multiple bid/ask/last series on your indicator/strategy
- the historical bid/ask series would hold ALL bid/ask events sent out by the exchange. Thus, it would NOT be the bid/ask at the time a trade went off
- on the historical part they would be replayed by OnBarUpdate
- OnMarketData only would be triggered realtime
- on historical replay the series are synced by their timestamp
- timestamps in NT are down to 1 second granularity
- on realtime obviously the OnBarUpdate events on multiple series come in at the sequence as sent out by the exchange

So:
- the EXACT sequence of a mix of bid/ask/last events will NOT be maintained while processing the historical data from multiple series
- the EXACT sequence of the bid/ask/last events by themselves WILL be maintained while processing the historical data from multiple series

However, on events with DIFFERENT timestamps the sequence always IS maintained.

Hope this sheds some light.

Hey guys!

Here is a quick video I made showing some of the biggest changes in NT7. I think most of you know I'm not very happy with the development of NT7 in general, so I've been putting it off for quite a while to be honest.

...

I'll plan to make another video showing the new strategy analyzer and genetic optimizer, and the new market replay features. That will also give me an opportunity to talk more about the continuous contracts, as that is a key feature in strategy development. Give me some time

Mike

THANK YOU! I'm also really looking forward to the Strategy Analyzer and market replay features in 7.

HI Mike,

Does NT7 Strategy Wizard allow to build multi-range-frame strategies (thinking SbSRenko) ?

TIA!
TJ

TJ, I've never used the wizard, but I doubt any changes were made to it from 6.5 to 7, and MTF would definitely be something the wizard is unable to handle.

Let me state up front that NinjaTraders Official policy is to not use NT7 for live trading:

I have used it for live trading & it seems I am not the only one. No problems, but keep your broker's trade desk phone number ready to go just in case.

The difference between static and dynamic is that one keeps the last price centered. For some instruments you can not use one of them for futures trading. I forget the specifics (licensing issue???), maybe someone else can answer that, but I loaded both and saved workspaces with the one that did not give an error, so it was experimentally determined well over a month ago and I have not given it much thought since.

NT7 public beta is beta 13, I personally would recommend against using it in live trading. I make that recommendation because I am using it in live trading, for the DOM only -- not a single chart or indicator -- and it crashes on me daily.

As for the DOM, the Static DOM is the way to go for sure. Before I used the static dom I would accidentally enter the market at the wrong price when I was trying to place limit orders, etc, because the whole ladder was moving and I didn't want to pause it each time. With static dom, it doesn't move. You have to pay the royalty licensing fee, it is 15 cents a trade or something like that, you buy it in bulk direct from NT up front.

Thanks Big Mike for the really great forum and website. I've been using MT4 with some fx brokers for the last year or so but making a move to Ninja and the CME. I really like what NT7 looks like from the demonstration videos I've been watching. We are now into May, is the new release gaining stability, enough to warrant live trading in your opinion?
