I'm a Debian guy, great for servers, not so much for workstations. But even then, for a dedicated trading specialist, you should simply run Windows or run Windows in a VM and spend the rest of your time on more important things. You can get a VM setup in a few minutes and not worry about it again. If the VM is slow, build a faster computer.

If we are going to rearchitect NinjaTrader 9, how about supporting CUDA/OpenCL GPU optimization?

CUDA would be my vote. This is great for Machine Learning Apps.

CUDA would restrict GPGPU processing to NVIDIA GPUs only. You would only want to use CUDA if OpenCL doesn't support a specific feature. OpenCL works with all manufacturers who implement it (Intel, AMD/ATI, NVIDIA, etc.). Performance differences between the two seem to be pretty minor.

I hope we can get a definitive answer tomorrow as to whether GPGPU processing will be supported in NT8 because that will affect my purchasing decisions.

Some remarks concerning NinjaTrader:

I used many years MetaStock. Unfortunately the last 15 years nothing has been done related to improving technical analysis tools, programming possibilities or auto-trading interface. So, I changed to NinjaTrader and Kinetick as a real time data provider. First let me say that I like it. As a fresh user I would like to make a few remarks for the attention of Mr. Deux.

NinjaTrader support at the forum can be better. Please avoid those pre-prepared answers. If you want to use them just to be sure it is known, that is OK but only together with a real answer to the mentioned problem, so please read and try to understand the problem and react to that.

One of the problems was data interruptions using the standard Kinetick real time connection. The problem was only solved on a proposition from Kinetick support to use IQFeed. Then the problem was solved. This means something is still wrong with the normal Kinetick real time connection, but I have the feeling nothing has been done. NT support loves to blame Interactive Brokers resetting the connection once every 24 hours even if you explain them this is known to me and not the problem.

I noticed a number of times missing data chunks. Most annoying is that it is always difficult to have this updated. Using reload all historical data on the chart most of the time does not cure the problem. I generally notice this looking at 2 PC's displaying the same chart.

What caused and still causes a lot of problems is the use of session templates. Range bars and Renko bars that show session breaks in the chart are terrible for indicators used. I still wonder why you need this. I want to receive the data the provider sends me nothing more nothing less with no session relation. Minimum NT should provide the possibility for a session that does not use a session, just the available data. I tried to solve it for Range and Renko bars and it works, but no help from support!

Me and more people have problems with the standard Renko bars in NT. I made a number of propositions. Please implement them. Problem with Renko bars - [AUTOLINK]NinjaTrader[/AUTOLINK] Support Forum

What is causing me real problems is auto-trading between NT and IB. The standard available scripts are not working good. Sometimes it runs OK a number of trades but then it gets mixed up again.

In relation with auto-trading a real problem is that you cannot change any parameters of your strategy without stopping the strategy. BUT this influences the live connection with the broker, for example the stop loss and profit targets are lost. Re-starting the strategy, you are supposed to flatten the position, which is of course not the idea.

In another platform I am using the possibility to use the same strategy ID to run an auto-trading strategy, but at the same time a manual strategy, with the possibility to switch one or the other off. The manual strategy uses named trend lines that when crossed by price open or close trades. This is unfortunately not possible in NT. Please have a look at it.

If using multiple data providers, NT is looking for the symbol with the first opened provider and not finding it, it is supposed to look at the next connected provider. That is how it is supposed to work, but it simply is not.

Activating a strategy it must be possible to open a position manually to start with an active trade, because you are not watching the screen every minute.

To view a number of stocks easily, there should be a NEXT button to change to the following stock within a folder. This means that stock data should be organized in different folders and not just one for all stocks in NT now.

I am never sure importing or exporting data if the time reference is at the start or end of the bar? Exporting data can only be done 1 item at a time. Terrible of you need to export 50 different stocks.

It is good to say that perhaps using another way of connecting with your broker is a solution for some kind of problem, if at the same time you say that it is not supported.

If you trade manually, your broker gives you mostly everything you need. So, I would spent only little effort developing a manual trading interface in NT. There is more and more secure trading possible directly with your broker. That will give you more development time to work on real technical analysis, strategy and auto-trading solutions.

Since I am in favor of attributing a fixed starting amount to each stock traded with no profit or loss sharing between the stocks, I am disappointed this is not possible with the strategy analyzer in NT.

There are probably more things but this is what comes into my head for now…I have a bit the feeling that you have a team of programmers, probably doing a good job, but I am missing really basic (auto)-trading possibilities. Is there somebody in the group thinking and trying out features that are of real advantage or really needed by traders?

Thank you for your attention,
Sylvestro

Wow, really fantastic webinar from Ray @NinjaTrader, the entire webinar was about NT8 -- much more than I could have hoped for, and I'm sure many people feel the same way.

Thank you Ray for debuting NT8 on futures.io (formerly BMT) And for providing as much info and answering everyone's questions as you did.

I will post the recording for the webinar sometime tomorrow.
