Although the Sharpe Ratio is widely used as a performance metric, it has two major weaknesses

-> the returns are calculated as arithmetic mean
-> the calculation of the standard deviation includes upside risk, therefore large gains increase the denominator and have a negative impact on the sharpe ratio

My suggestion would be to add Sortino Ratio and Return Retracement Ratio.

The Sortino Ratio uses compounded returns, and the standard deviation only takes into account downside risk. The Return Retracement ratio is also shown by the Rina Performance Report.

MultiCharts does it. Stockcharts.com does it. Simply by entering a formula like "GE:WMT" you can plot a ratio. How about "GE:WMT with the S&P behind it, and GE, WMT below? Easy..

For example, it took a whole ten seconds to create this chart:
GE:WMT - SharpCharts Workbench - StockCharts.com

Why doesn't NT do anything like this out of the box? Not even the ratio indicators set up this easily.

In Chart Trader, in addition to Limit and Stop order lines, add the ability to reverse at a price line. For example if long placing a reverse order line on the chart at a lower price will cause the trade to reverse to a short when price touches the reverse order line. Opposite for shorts.

I'd like the ability to open NT in "Safe Mode" with no workspaces open, even if there was a workspace open on the previous shutdown.

I've had multiple occassions where an indi that I am working open complies without any problem. But then when I go to add it to or update it on a chart, it locks up NT and NT shuts down. Then when you restart NT it locks up and shuts down repeatedly because it is trying to load the offending indi.

If NT had a safe mode, or no workspace option, I could open NT and correct the offending indi.

You can safely just delete the '_Workspaces.xml' file in the 'workspaces' folder under 'My Documents/NinjaTrader 7', it will open up with none active then.

Ratfink,

Cory gave me the same basic suggestion over on a seperate thread that I had started seeking a solution. That allowed me to get NT open without crashing so that I could fix the offending indi. Easy, simple, but would still have been easier and simpler with a "control panel only" option at startup.

Thanks for offering a solution.

Ron

when opening complex workspaces, even on robust machines capable of multiple monitors and heavy internet pipeline usage, somehow these workspaces manage to bring even some of the latest intel Core i3/i5/i7's to a grinding and slow halt....

I do not understand the internal complexities of C/C+/C++ and the other more common languages (go back a few generations in languages, especially mainframe, and its on!), however, I do understand the basis and concept of programs, programming, processing and results generation processes.

I have a simple workspace with 9 charts of varying complexities (compound and overlapping indicators being done on their respective symbols; some of the indicators calculate using the same processes or sub-sub-processes, hence the significant overlap. The workspace has the control center, market analyzer, dome, time sales and alerts windows. two charts have multiple symbols, one with 8 and rather simplistic analytics on each panel; 1 with five and same analytics each panel.

Problem statement:

... loading takes forever to visualize and return positive control. loading data and masaging through requested history just to build the indicators and results displayed.
... all outlines and positions show up almost immediately although they do not flesh out, and pause for over 2 minutes many times longer before returning control

Anticipated improvement / outcome:

... workspace page loads occur and do not pause under massive over-right stress. some call these problems memory leaks (routines that grab more memory and never release prior or reuse prior allocations)

... precompile workspaces when saved or application closes or opens;
... have some pre-load that already knows what requirements (memory, processes, etc) a workspace requires, so that the process is optimized
... optimize workspace controls so that loading, maintaining 3 or more open workspaces does not pose such a heavy cpu processor load issue

Suggested method of improvements...

... precompile the workspace load needs and use these stats / requirements to load balance better than is being done now

... use precompiled stats and memory requirements to better load balance and prepare for usage
... serialize each sucessive function so that when common processes are called (@sum, @avg, @min, @max, etc) do not reuse and compete for same resources and physical memory locations, thus causing all successive invocations within just 1 chart, let alone any other chart to have to wait for the previous invocation to complete (which is probably what is causing the hanging condition)

I hope you guys take these suggestions in a positive manner and not view them as critical or criticism.....

we need to make Ninja better and better than the other poaching applications out there!

massive cool idea Mon!

(hey, pardon the Rasta in me; can't remember how I got that way tuh-day; musta been too much par-ti)...

is there anyway to externally review your workspace/chart files in an offline manner?
... in a limited manner - where just the number of monitors used, number of charts, boxes and other text areas used, where the spacing relative to each other item shows up, in either a minimized or screencast manner?

is there anyway to externally review a template/chart file in an offline manner?
... in a limited manner - where the list of (essential and most importantly) indicators can be known before invocation? reason if the template calls for 8 indicators and you have only 3; you see only 3 and never know what the other missing ones are; whether paid, free, shared, restricted by license/time/machine/etc

is there anyway (in the Windows 7/8 vernacular) to select either of these above mentioned two sub-file members and select open in (browser) such as Safari (Apple's free cross platform browser for example) to make display of either of these "xml" files more palpable (as they display in multiple colors and properly formated markup language styles)

rationale...

Workspace templates -
... one of the most unique features of NT that separates this platform above the other trading platforms
... one of the hardest to maintain features of NT given the complexity and variety and the accumulation of so many sub-templates over time, one can't maintain and eliminate / combine / maintain their extensive collection

Chart templates -
... one of the most unique features of NT that separates this platform above the other trading platforms
--- one of the most frustrating limitations of these are when we swap / share / create / alter / maintain these, we don't know what sub-parameters they call for.
--- key point one need know just how robust or weak the list of called for indicators are within template
--- key point one need know if they have in advance (before invocation), the sub-indicators or need acquire those missing (purchase, lease, trial test, borrow, create, replicate, pilfer, snitch () ) so when the chart is invoked with that template it fleshes out as intended instead of in a diminished manner, unintended by sender

Correct the "summary" report in SA for "Start Date" to be the actual first trade date, or at least show it in parenthesis or something so that when you run a basket report and not all your data starts at the same exact time, you can see what the summary data actually represents.

Here is an example where it shows 1/1/2000 but the actual first trade date is 5/1/2007.
