Thanks Silvester, I think I got a pretty good understanding on what it means by updating. You didn't really touch on what would happen in a repainting scenario, that's what I don't understand because what you just explained as updating, I initially thought was considered repainting. Do you mind explaining a little further? Thanks.

as I mentioned in my post, there's ONE thing that is repainting. the volume in the PriceActionSwingOscillator indicator. here's the quote again from @dorschden that explains why:

Quoting
The only thing that is re-painting is the PasOsc volume part. Because every time we get a new bar that doesn't make a new swing high/low we don't know whether this bar belongs to the current swing or to the next swing that will come in the future. To highlight this situation the PasOsc volume draws the volume histogram according to the current swing direction and the plot line draws the volume to what the swing volume will change if the bars belong to the next swing which will change the swing direction.

you can load this indicator and see for yourself what happens. a very simple way to see if an indicator repaints is to refresh your chart, and if any values (lines, dots, bars etc) change, that's repainting. you won't find any of that in the pas indicators. they update and don't repaint.

here's an example that shows repainting. if you refresh your chart, those blue and red lines will go away and only one line will be visible.

for the most part why repainting is happening, and how to avoid it, is very well explained by @Zondor:

Quoting
It's trivial to avoid repainting
In NT7 there is a new method, PlotColors, that allows true multi-color plotting.

Multi-color plotting means that different portions of ONE plot can have different colors. NOT that what looks like one plot is actually assembled from a bunch of different plots that get sort of linked together.

That means NO REPAINTING. EVER. PERIOD. On ANY type of Plot, including LINES.

This has"only" been available for about a year and a half, no wonder nobody knows about it.

Why change the color of a line on the fly programatically, when you can keep switching back and forth between different plots? Oh, I forgot.. can't use NT7, we love the way NT6.5 crashes all the time. Sorry.

I have posted SEVERAL indicators that use this technique. Here's one:

Here is the thread on the Ninjatrader forums where I learned how to do it:

NT MultiColor Plot Approach - NinjaTrader Support Forum

hopefully that will help to understand what repainting is.

the pas indicators ... @dorschden:

with the last update, building strategies has been made even easier. there're also several examples in this thread.

@Silvester17 and or @dorschden, since you said it is now easier to build a strategy for PAS, may I request you might supply a sample PAS strategy that others could use to review and modify?

Also, I think somewhere there had been a posting of a modification that could be made to PAS to allow Strategy Wizard to use PAS. If anyone could remind us where that is - the custom strategy and the Strategy Wizard would be a great help in experimenting with PAS strategies.

Would really appreciate it.

thanx dorschden

it is a great tool, but may you add a feature to extract all the indicator values at swings highs/lows and export them into excel with related candles (OHLC)? with all the other related statistics values ?

this will help us to study the market from a statistical/ probabilistic point of view.

thanx again for this piece of art.

Hi Guys. I think this indicator deserves it's award and would like to express my sincere thanks to Dorschden for this indicator. I'd also like to share some research which maybe of interest to some people to show other ways of using this indicator.

I've analyzed the data in detail for all of the instruments I trade and if you know how to interpret the data it can provide an edge. For example the attached spreadsheet shows an analysis of all of the swings of CL since the beginning of 2010. This is based on a 20 Better Reno Chart using a swing size of 7. Relevant details as follows:

1. The count shows the number of swings for each HH to HL and HH to LL etc. For example there have been 239 swings from HL to HH and 104 from HH to LL.

2 The mean is the mean swing in ticks. For example the mean for a HL to HH is 221 ticks.

3. The median is the one to use as most of the distributions are asymmetric so the median is more useful. The median is only 199 from a HL to HH compared to the mean of 221 ticks. This is because extreme swings can skew the distribution and mean whereas the median ignores these outliers.

4. The % is important as it shows the % probability of swings that occur. For example going from a HL to a HH has occurred 63% of the time which is in the favor of the trader.

5. The percentile chart shows the number of ticks at each percentile. So for example the HL to HH 50th percentile which is the median the figure is 199 ticks. So when I'm trading a 20 Better renko chart on oil I know that out of 239 swings half have been over 199 ticks and half below. So I know when the swing has progressed to 285 ticks I'm at the 80th percentile know that there have been only 20% of occurrences above this. Obviously you want to be out of the trade at this point.

6. The count table shows the number of swing at each percentile.

7 The bars show the average number of bars per swing. For example I know that going from a HL to a HH is about 12 bars. If I'm at 12 bars and the price has hardly moved I'm out.

Based on this research I have been able to utilize a framework that gives me some statistically significant parameters to trade within. The obvious drawback is the data only goes back to 2010. I have analyzed ES back to 2004 and found that although there was a variation in the results from 2004 - current compared to 2010 to current I didn't feel they were statistically significant.

Cheers
DJ

Do you know that you are a piece of "holy grail"?
do you know that such statistical/probabilistic sheets called the "EDGE = Educated Guess"?
Do you know that everybody here MUST read this post and take it as a step zero to leap to limitless sky?

Sir; I must thank you for such great ideas !

I'm always looking for such brilliant ideas - Numbers never lies ! such ideas can make what is a "TRUE EDGE".

P.S. djkiwi; may you check your private msgs.

BIG THANK YOU, djkiwi

Can someone please help me out (PM'ing me might be the best way to go). I am trying to generate a strategy using the PAS indicator in NT8 (I just installed the latest version today)?

My scripts won't compile. It doesn't matter if it is an oscillator based approach or swing indicator based approach, but I would like to automate Long to Short, Short to Long when the indicator flips automatically at the pivot point.

Anyone that can set me down the right path of how this can be done in NT8 would be a saint!!

Thanks!!
