John Thom has resurrected his news indicator and released a new version for NT7.

The jtEconNews indicator is not being supported by John Thom anymore, as he sold the rights to the code a little while ago. Unfortunately, the last version of the indicator was compiled for NT 7 beta versions prior to 16, which requires a rebuild to work properly. He mentioned that there might be copies of the source code floating around though - does anyone have this, by any chance? I like the indicator and would like to be able to continue using it, but it won't work with any version of NT beyond Beta 15.

NT7 Update for jtEconNewsAddIn

I've been listening to the issues people have been having with the latest NT7 version of the this indicator and have rebuilt it exclusively for NT7. The previous version was targeted at both 6.5 and 7. Although this seems to work out okay for me, for others.. not so much.

So here is a link to the indicator page. At the bottom is a new download link to the NT7 version only. This version brings back an improved set of chart integration features including shading the background during a news warning period, marking the event on the chart ands exposing a dataseries that can be used as input to strategies that want to avoid news periods.

Anyway, here's the link... http://johnthom.blogspot.com/p/jteconnews-add-in-for-ninjatrader-65.html

All I ask in return is that you report any issues in the comments section of the link above so I don't have to search for them.

Thanks.

It was a zip. That zip contained a DLL. DLL's are usually obfuscated and you have no clue what code you are loading. It could be malicious, so we do not allow it here to protect less technical traders. As I said above, I have no reason to believe that is the case here -- quite the contrary, but we don't make exceptions.

Is there an example around how to use this great news indicator in a NT7 strategy? I have searched through the different posts and John's blog but can't find a lead.

It will be difficult to use this indicator in a strategy, as the news items are not exposed. It is really a tool for the discretionary trader.

For a strategy you may want to define times, where you either refrain from trading - prior and during a news release - and/or play a breakout strategy by using the news release as a catalyst. This is difficult to automate, you would probably need to store all relevant news events and their release times in a database, which could be accessed by the strategy.

On the other hand most of the news releases will occur at the same day of week and time of that day again and again, so you can also use a filter to avoid those times in general. This filter may not catch all of the news releases but quite a number of them.

Automating intra-day strategies is not easy.
