Evaluation of NT8 in the market and on futures.io

Hello,

I'm back coding and trading after some long time recovering from a personal disaster.

It seems to me that the Ninjatrader forums here on futures.io, ninjascript development, sharing ideas, has dropped off significantly from 5 years ago....

Is this so?

I have a lot of custom code in NT7 that will take a significant effort to convert to NT8....

When Ninja created their own brokerage, did that change things here?

And, what about all the effort to change NT7 custom code to NT8?

Did the coders just get tired, move on to other platforms or brokerages, or?

NT8 is a significant improvement over NT7, but the conversion is going to be much effort.

Fortunately I am grandfathered with Ninja, and can access, say AMP Futures...but it seems there has been a big change here in the amount of new code and participants...

Any perceptions?

Thanks

Hi Vantojo,

I switched from 7 to 8 about 6 months ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I handled all the programming over a weekend, and then about a week of testing and I was set. The put the major code break changes out here. https://ninjatrader.com/support/helpGuides/nt8/en-us/?code_breaking_changes.htm

If you know your code well, and you know what to look for finding what requires a change is fairly easy.

I am using NT brokerage and they were great to work with, getting me set up, and the support from the NT team has been pretty solid.

If you have any specific areas you want to know more about let me know and I can give you some further opinions / insights, etc.

Good luck getting back in the game!

Ian

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the encouragement.

I have a lot of custom code, like indicator that place and manage orders, charts with toolbar buttons/click events, modification of the Chart Trader panel, SQL / database integration. Microsoft Message Queue for IPC.

I've started the conversion but will do the Strategies first. The MSMQ and SQL are working well in NT8.

Will stay on NT7 for manual trading for the moment.

Seems most of the work will be going to WPF.

I really like the AddOn feature....had to cludge NT7 to get this functionality.

:-)

vantojo,

I think you will find that NT 8 is more robust in many ways, though some of the past versions have had stability issues.
8.11 had a pretty nasty issue where if you refresh your trade performance report while running a strategy it would freeze. This caught me during live trading one time. I reported to NT support, and they were able to fix it with their latest 8.12 release.

They just added a ton of new bells and whistles with 8.12 that you might like also. They have new bar types, and a whole host of new indicators, and volume profiling tools.

Regarding the SIM engine, I will say that 7 was more liberal in that I could get limit orders filled on first touch a lot of the time where I likely would not have gotten filled in live trading. 8 is definitely more conservative so this is another improvement to note.

Best of luck!

Ian

I've noticed NT8 lagging under fast market conditions several times, like around the open and close in the ES. In the last 2 days, under the highly volatile ES trading, NT8 is several MINUTES behind. It's not my machine, NT indicators (very few) or open workspaces (which is 1). I have another market depth application running on the same machine, processing the same data feed that keeps up to the second that I can compare to a live trading room application that also is current. I believe NT8 has a fundamental design flaw that causes these delays under fast market conditions. I'm now evaluating other platforms. This morning, while other applications were processing the 8th 5-minute bar in real time, and current, NT8 was still forming bar 2. And I'm tired of the random crashes.

jphiggs,

I have had similar problems keeping up with the super high volatility this week. Though I didn't have a hard crash yet. Version 11 used to crash all the time, so I switched back down to version 10. What version were you on?

Also let me know if you find any software that is faster than NT / keeps data in real time without lagging in high volatility. I assume that it is likely the same story for all the major retail systems: TradeStation, MultiCharts, ToW, Sierra, they are not built for low latency. But there must be something in the high end retail space that can keep up... I just haven't found it yet.

Ian

@iantg, I was running the latest version of NT8.

Here's a snap from a few minutes ago of Bookmap, which you can trade from, but I don't use that feature. Every tick from IQFeed is processed in this extremely fast market, showing T&S, volume profile, quote delta, current book and history.

Seems like you might have a 3rd party indicator running? I will have my support team reach out to help isolate the source of the issue.

@NinjaTrader, I just have a couple reference EMAs, a middle of the day's range indicator and NT's ATR indicator. All calculate on bar close.
