Price alerts and NT

This is the first serious drawback for NT that I have come across. Just wondering if someone else has come up with a work around.

Price alerts - I am aware of only a couple of options. Use a chart indicator or use an alert on the price column of an MA.

The problem with the chart alert is that if the chart is not displaying the instrument, then the alert will not trigger.

The problem with the MA is that it applies the same price check for each stock listed in the MA.

Need a chart based system that doesn't require the instrument to be displayed. Any suggestions? Is this possible on NT?

Well, you could always write one. But why do you want a chart based system that does not use a chart. Why not just put it on since you are using a chart anyway.

Here is the problem - I trade multiple various stocks throughout the day. I have a few favorites, but if I see another that I want to track during the day, I add it to the list of favorites in an MA. I link the MA to a couple of charts amd check all the stocks on the MA throughout the day.

Setting up an alert using NT's current setup is pointless - if the stock is not displayed on the chart the chart based alert will not trigger. Setting a price alert in an MA means setting one price alert for all the stocks.

Right now I open up a new chart for every alert and keep it open (the alerts don't trigger if the chart is minimized).

Here is some additional discussion:

Creating something along these lines is way beyond my programming skills.

Day Trading Fool - I've done the paper logic for a Strategy that monitors 5-6 Instruments and has individually configurable Alerts ... but haven't had time to code it yet as I've been coding some other things. If there is a small basket of things you look at that might be a way to do it ie create it as a Strategy where the inputs are Instrument Names, Indicator to monitor, Level to Alert or something like that. You might even get creative and do, say, a NYSESentiment strat that looks at TICK/TRIN/AD lines or whatever and gives you audio and visual alerts.

Thanks for the input MXASJ,

My trading strategy involves trading anything that looks promising. About the only time I set alerts is when I find a stock that has had some big moves and is consolidating; I set a price alert to monitor for a breakout.

Opening up a new chart and leaving it hang in the background works for now. I imagine it is fairly resource intensive, but I haven't had a problem yet, and have had perhaps 15 charts or so open. Clutters the screen real estate somewhat because I have to leave them all 'up' for the alerts to trigger.

Nearly every brokerage platform that I have used includes an alert feature that efficiently handles this type of situation. Somewhat surprising NT doesn't have something built in.

Other than that - NT 7 keeps getting better!

Why not have all your alert charts in a different workspace?

That way they are open but not seen. I run 5 workspaces. 4 for charts ES,CL, 6E, YM and one for GOM recorders. If PK2 or Trendline Alert Custom has a line cross or the MA window has a price level hit, I get an sound alert & it written to the output window or the alerts window. Depending on the code used.

See the Let's Teach Ninja Trader to Talk Thread. I am also working on a Volatility filter alert thread.

Great for watching BaseBall in the other room. I have an arsenal of sounds that is easily distinguished over the TV and I can then stroll over and read the window to see where it came from.
