Well he's not stupid

Would be useful if and when they publish the specific processors affected.

It seems all Intel processor are affected, not AMD's.
You can download the attached file and unzip/run to see if your machine is impacted.
If this are okay you should see something like this:

Their processors are affected but the probability of being impacted is lower than on cloud providers services (AWS, Google CE, ...). On your own PC you're usually the only user so you have to have a virus or a malware activating this thing. On AWS EC2 a client VM could impact the hypervisor (the physical server) and impacting the other clients.
So the main risk is for some cloud providers, for a "normal" user it's as risky a getting a bad malware. The Wannacry ransomware was much worst, but let's see what's happening next.

Okay, so what you're saying is, they are affected but the risk assessment is low on the end-user/standalone side.

Makes sense.

Thanks also for the tool!

Quoting
03 Jan 14:03 [INTC] Spokesperson: exploits do not have potential to corrupt or modify data; many types of computing devices, with many different vendors’ processors and operating systems, are susceptible to these exploits Intel and other technology companies have been made aware of new security research describing software analysis methods that, when used for malicious purposes, have the potential to improperly gather sensitive data from computing devices that are operating as designed. Intel believes these exploits do not have the potential to corrupt, modify or delete data.Recent reports that these exploits are caused by a “bug” or a “flaw” and are unique to Intel products are incorrect. Based on the analysis to date, many types of computing devices — with many different vendors’ processors and operating systems — are susceptible to these exploits.Intel is committed to product and customer security and is working closely with many other technology companies, including AMD, ARM Holdings and several operating system vendors, to develop an industry-wide approach to resolve this issue promptly and constructively. Intel has begun providing software and firmware updates to mitigate these exploits. Contrary to some reports, any performance impacts are workload-dependent, and, for the average computer user, should not be significant and will be mitigated over time.Intel is committed to the industry best practice of responsible disclosure of potential security issues, which is why Intel and other vendors had planned to disclose this issue next week when more software and firmware updates will be available. However, Intel is making this statement today because of the current inaccurate media reports.Check with your operating system vendor or system manufacturer and apply any available updates as soon as they are available. Following good security practices that protect against malware in general will also help protect against possible exploitation until updates can be applied.Intel believes its products are the most secure in the world and that, with the support of its partners, the current solutions to this issue provide the best possible security for its customers.Link: https://newsroom.intel.com/news/intel-responds-to-security-research-findings/** NOTE: Earlier: INTC Weakness attributed to The Register report: 'Kernel memory leaking' Intel processor design flaw forces Linux, Windows redesign - Source TradeTheNews.com

Ron

For 10 years this flaw / bug was living undetected on our machines and suddenly "they" decided to go public. Hard to believe that there isn't more to this story.
Nobody wants to compromise speed, not 5% and for sure not 30% or even worse. At some point a solution to recover the speed will be offered, but not for free.

Are you saying we shouldn't get the update/fix that will come?
Because I can agree is not security issue for us, but if the update everyone and speed goes down it does bother me

With the information available now I'll say wait & see, don't rush on the fix yet.

But update your web browsers, this is where the risk is higher.
Keep Firefox updated (v57) and use this trick for Google Chrome.

There is a lot of talk about security due to the kernal flaw, but what about memory leaks and cleanup? I suppose the Garbage Collection will be done by .NET? Is there a new .NET coming? Does anyone know if Ninja will adopt the use of a newer .NET? There have been a lot of people that have memory issues with NT.

Thanks
Bob
