When panic and fear grip the market, the authorities try their best to stop the bleeding. Their go-to move is to ban short selling of stocks -- a popular speculation method practiced by traders who believe stocks should fall further.

You may remember, for example, that in September 2008, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission banned short sales of banking stocks, "to protect the integrity and quality of the securities market and strengthen investor confidence." (sec.gov) So did the British regulators.

To help stop the current wave of the crisis, the eurozone financial authorities have banned short selling, too. Writes our European analyst Brian Whitmer in the August Global Market Perspective (excerpt; bold added):
