Thanks, this is a workaround.

Anyhow, the support came back with an answer this morning (although I am only using the free version). Here is the answer:

"We have reproduced the problem at our end. This bug is currently being fixed. Please, use rollover on time basis, not volume."

This is in line what you suggested.

Thanks InsideDay,
I have been looking for this solution for a bit of while and you have delivered it! My gratitude to you.

I've got another question, I look at the Australian SPI Futures and attempted to do the roll over as per your instruction on the SPI but without success. What else do I need to add here?

regards

paul

Edit: I can't find it in the Symbol Root but I have no issue accessing the individual Symbol from IB
Edit 2: Found it! Just attached the Symbol Dictionary Setting For Australian SPI Futures Root Symbol

Just an FYI - TSS says they are targeting MC 7 for release this month:

"MultiCharts 7 Beta 5 is nearing on the Release Candidate and the final release of MultiCharts 7 (scheduled for July 13th, 2011)."

I've been asking about the Help file which is from the 5.5 version. They said that are trying to get it done concurrent with the release, but hedged their answer. They did say they would be releasing a bunch of "how-to" videos, so that will probably help a bunch with the new DOM trading feature.

They've been pretty good at posting bugs and scheduled fixes. I really doubt if they'll make the 13th as we all know how software schedules go, but they are getting close.
Jack

I agree with you Fat Tails I have not used the full version only the Discretionary version but from what I can see, and it is Beta, its nowhere near ready for live use yet.
In saying that, neither probably STILL is Ninja Trader
And ive been messing about with that since 2007!

I am curious as to why you think MC is not ready for live use. I've been using MultiCharts to trade cash for about 18 months and have experienced almost zero problems, whereas I experienced problems with Ninja on a daily or hourly basis.

Using MultiCharts .Net 8.0

First Adventure - Loading a BackAdjusted Futures Chart

My first adventure today is to add a symbol for NQ to the quote manager. I open the quote manager, select "Add symbol" in the task bar. This is a painful exercise, as I have to add each contract for NQ individually. After some time, I find out that I can load them more comfortably via the dropdown menu. I quickly load down the symbols from my broker and connect the front month contract to the datafeed.

I now want to open a chart for NQU2. Although I am connected, I cannot find NQU2 for my chart. I guess that I need to add it via "add" and select my broker.

Trying to add the symbol produces a hang. In my quote manager I can see that the ticks are loading. After trying again for a few times it finally works. I now add "NQU2" to my portfolio. "1 symbol added successfully". Now I enter "NQU2" into the little form and the NQU2 chart finally appears.

I had set my chart to mode merge-backadjusted, but MultiCharts ignores that setting. The screenshot below shows that prior to rollover day, which was June 7, the old contract is displayed, although I had selected "Merge Data Sources into a Single Chart".

In the quote manager I have only connected the symbol NQU2, which receives real-time data. For historical backfill connecting is not necessary. So what shall I do to get a merged backadjusted chart? I will try find a solution at the MultiCharts forum.

Second Adventure - Creating a Custom Future

I like the features of the quote manager. Particularly I love to see a feature that allows to create backadjusted futures based on volume rollover. I do not know, whether the feature works, but at least it is there. I also like to be able to set several sessions per day and select the first session of the trading day.

So I decide to build a custom contract, which I call NQ #G and which is based on volume rollover. Now I want to select that custom future via "Format Instruments". But this is not possible, see screenshot below. "NQ #G is not found.

OK, I have added a custom future, but MC does not find it. So now I try to enter the name of the custom future in the lower left corner of the chart, and this time it works.

Now I try again to switch to another custom future via rightclicking the chart and selecting "Format Instrument", but the custom futures are not recognized. If you look at the screenshot, you will notice that MultiCharts displays the contract NQ #G, but still it cannot find it.

Revisiting the Feature "Merge Data Sources into a Single Chart"

I am testing again to check whether this works with single contracts. But no way, the chart shows a single month contract, when this option is selected. I then switch from NQ #G to the similar contract YM #G, and now the chart is not updated correctly, but uses historical data from YM Sep 12 and real-time data from NQU2, see screenshot below.

I am not yet satisfied with this experience and will post this in the MultiCharts forum to find out where the problem lies. If any body has a suggestion, I am happy to learn how to use MultiCharts in a better way. I believe that the product has some potential, so I will invest the time necessary to find the workarounds for the various traps and bugs.

When I checked the version number of MultiCharts, I discovered that the version number was not up-to-date. I had MC .NET 8.0 Build 5536, while the current Build is 5826. As the MultiCharts popup window told me that it is up-to-date, but did not update, I decided to reinstall it again. Just to make sure that I am reporting issues with the latest release and not something that was released weeks ago.

This was a big mistake as all my custom futures, settings and data are lost now. Unless somebody tells me, how to recover the workspace, settings and data I have to restart everything again. So far this is not much. How can I do an update without losing all my settings and data?

Maybe I am just spoiled by NinjaTrader, where those settings and workfiles are kept separately in the Documents folder and are not affected by a release update.

Or I am simply not yet able to make correct use of MultiCharts. It is not as intuitive and easy to use as NinjaTrader. At least this is my first opinion, maybe this impression will change later, once I have learned how to use it.
