After the first of the year I couldn't get range bars or tick bars to work on Ninjatrader with the MB Trading data feed and many others have had the same problem. Multicharts has no problem with those charts.

But one big drawback is that you can't import indicators into MC like you can with NT and there's to die for indi's all over that will run on MC ('coarse purist price action traders won't think much of that). Once I'm convinced it works for me I'll lease or buy it so I'm grateful for the Discretionary version so I can have all the time needed to get used to it beyond what a trial time period offers.

In the same situation. But I'm not into custom indicator except when I started to get into trading where I would like to see what people get so excited of new trading idea posted in forums.

This is great news! Does it have all the features of NT's ATM strategies?

I don't know if it has ALL the features but they say they have some:

"The trading platform provides built-in strategies for automating entering and exiting the market."

Quoted from their site here:

Hi Poocher, sounds like we both use MBTrading. I am trying to place orders to test the MCDT platform but they keep being rejected. Main error message is invalid time in force [Day]. Also not sure of order size since MBTrading size 1 = 10000. In quote manager/edit symbol, I have " Use Exchange & Ecn settings" checked. If you have your order entry working any tips would be appreciated.

Does the free DT version of Multicharts allow you to place real trades for an unlimited period of time? Meaning, it's a fully functional free version. Unlike NT7 which only allows free charting.

*edit nevermind, I just saw on their site that it IS completely free. Got-DAMN, this is madness. Range bars been giving me a headache in NT so tonight gonna try MC. So glad I didn't purchase the lifetime license which I was soon thinking about doing. Whew.

As someone who was stuck in Tradestation land for four years, Multicharts seems like a work of art. They seem to have eliminated almost all the weaknesses of Tradestation, kept the strengths, and made many improvements.

As a discretionary trader it was hard for me to justify spending $300 every quarter on multicharts. I would not be using most of the features. But now, this Discretionary Trader Edition for FREE... it's just awesome!

I also love the way they are setting up trading through different brokers, giving it similar flexibility that they give with data feeds. The only thing that's preventing it from being the best charting, trading and training platform is lack of a built in simulator. If they had the simulator that could be combined wth their excellent market replay, this would be the ultimate trading and training tool for me.

I hope that they consider implementing a simulator similar to what we find in Sierra Chart, Ensign and Investor RT. Right now, I use NinjaTrader replay feature, but the limitation imposed by the files being stored in some sort of top secret format is a real turn off. I would much rather acquire historica tick data, import it, and practice as much as I want. That way I can find out if I would have been as good (or bad!) a trader in 2005 as I am now.

@Paladin, I've expressed my opinion in making sure MultiCharts gets a good sim engine and good reporting analytics. I was told they would like to do this but can only do so much at once. Sounds reasonable. I want it too, but as for priorities I would rather have the DOM today and the SIM engine tomorrow, so lets just hope that they get to it soon.

You should most certainly spend some time and make your interests known on their Project Management forum. They make everything public and you can vote things up or add feedback. I asked for this and they delivered I'm sure they didn't do it *just* because I asked, lol. But it is an awesome step in openness, and should be rewarded. All other platforms should be jealous.
