It looks like most people are tradig on Ninja Trader platforms and that MT4 traders are getting lesser by the day.

On the Futures Ninja, Multichart, Sierra, I/RT (MarketDelta) are the most popular. For Forex MT4 which is supported by many brokers has the favor of many traders. I still use it to do my long term analysis. What i like the most about it is it's speed. Compared to Ninja it's a Ferrari. Curious given it's old age.

Where is a good place to learn the basics of MT4? I have it but have never placed a trade with it. I would like to know more about it seeing as the things I hear that it is an incredibly powerful piece of software

You must go to your brokers website. I see most of the brokers have their own courses on their website that gives you a good overall idea of how to trade with the platform. If you want to spend money on the training I can give you directions to where I got my training from. But I can promise you that all these indicators that the people want to sell you are all working on Simple Moving Averages, like 6; 13 and 21 and also the 60 EMA. It all depends on what type of trader you are. I find it usefull to trade them on all my charts from M1 to H4. I trade mostly the M30 and the H1 but use the H4 and Daily charts to give me the direction for the day and then the M5 for my entry into the market. If you do not understand what I've written just say and I'll brake it down more. You wait for a X-over of the 6 EMA with the 13 EMA and the 21 EMA in a bullish trend before entering a long trade(Buy) or in a Bearish trend for a X-over on the downtrend before you open a short (Sell) trade. Hope it can help you a bit.

I use metatrader and compared to the other platforms i have used (for viewing) i like metatrader. Any article or report where it states that metatrader is getting less popular?

Comfort with a platform is why most people stick until they are forced to move. A lot of people still use mt4 for fx.
Personally I think it does a great job but I'm moving to NT7 have been getting familiar with it for the last few months, but I like to try every app out there as there are always changes/improvements to be had.

Although saying all that I'm reminded of a saying. 'New doesn't always mean better'.
