It is quite easy. This implementation is straightforward and step-by-step instructions are given on the github page.

I'm still trying to understand docker itself. Do I need wine or a VM, KVM? Trying to understand what's happening inside the docker image.

Mike

Need help?
1) Stop changing things. No new indicators, charts, or methods. Be consistent with what is in front of you first.
2) Start a journal and post to it daily with the trades you made to show your strengths and weaknesses.
3) Set goals for yourself to reach daily. Make them about how you trade, not how much money you make.
4) Accept responsibility for your actions. Stop looking elsewhere to explain away poor performance.
5) Where to start as a trader? Watch this webinar and read this thread for hundreds of questions and answers.

In a simplistic view, Docker is the VM. You just need to install the Docker system on your machine then install docker containers. Think of it is having KVM and setting up individual VM's on the machine...without all the headache

Once you have docker installed, you can then install the docker container. In the instance of this IQFeed container, you just run the commands to kick off the container and it will then download and build a VM for you in the background and then kick off the instructions for the container.

And the OS is what? Some kind of wine like hybrid that allows running of Windows apps and libraries? Or do I need to install Docker inside of a real OS like Windows 7?

The OS that gets installed into this docker instance is linux with Wine running IQFeed so it isn't any different than running it on a linux box with Wine, etc except no need to fuss with all the setup headaches that Wine/Linux brings. This is a plug/play version that just requires you to install the docker image and provide your IQFeed creedentials

Got it, that is what I had imagined. But to clarify, you could make a docker of anything (not Wine). Basically similar to a portable VM.

I'll have to play around with this later.

Should have responded earlier, Thanks eric, I found your link to the docker image on a another thread and it worked perfect. I was even able to update the iqfeed binary in wine to the latest. I pushed the image to dockerhub.

https://hub.docker.com/r/jaikumarm/iqfeed/

you can do a docker pull jaikumarm/iqfeed to get my image, if you feeling experimental.

However I problem I still face which the occasional wine crash during startup. with docker I just kill the container and spawn a new one in one or two attempts is running fine, and it stays on once it starts fine.

Awesome thread.
I just dumped windows for good for kubuntu. What about a linux trading section of the forum?

Can't this be put on git or make a futures .io git account?

There is a docker container available with IQFeed. https://github.com/bratchenko/docker-iqfeed.

Works great...been running for me for 3 months without issue.

@ericbrown i've finally decided to give the iqfeed docker a go and so far it works great. It's incredibly stable compared to just running iqfeed+wine like I have been up to this point.

One question though (showing my noobness),...how do you stop docker-iqfeed? I have it running in a terminal window so I have the iqfeed heartbeat printing. But I have no idea how to disconnect from iqfeed and stop the docker from within the terminal where it is running.

I've tried running docker stop, but I need the container id. Im not sure how to get that.

Diversification is the only free lunch
