Mathematica in Trading

I just saw the Wolfram Finance Platform thread and thought I would start a new thread to see if there were any other non-programmer type people using mathematica in their trading and how. I actually bought a commercial version of Mathematica a few years ago with the idea of making an ATS. There was link on Wolfram's site on how to setup IB feed directly into Mathematica and it was removed immediately after I made my purchase. That idea didn't last too long.

I was creating indicators(a low tech MACD) on charts with the FinancialData function a few years before they had the native TradingChart function. I have used it to import exported IB data for graphing and am starting to look at how I can use it for FT71 type statistical day type analysis.(I'll post some results on that when I get it all put together here and on my CL journal.) I also have worked on a swing trading stock scanner for stock options but that is still a work in progress. Even though my original idea for working with Mathematica evolved it's pretty cool tool that you can quickly implement new ideas with. Its not cheap though.

How are you using Mathematica?

Chris

Mathematica in trading

I recently purchased mathematica and as a first project n diving right in to learn the program, i wanted to develop a way to fit log-periodic cosine curve to the S & P 500. The curve has 6 parameters that must be fit to the data. You can do this using Findfit, but the resulting curve is not what we are looking for even though it is a best fit in the least squares sense. So as a different approach, I set up sliders for each parameter and got a very nice fit to the part of the price series that shows the log periodicity. This is a way of getting a very good fit without doing the math. Anyway, it was a fun intro to Mathematica.

Do you know a way to see the code for their stockchart? That could be very helpful in programing in nonstandard indicators.

I hope there will be a lot of enthusiasm for using Mathematica in trading.

Hi
Did you buy a commercial license? They should have given you a year of Premier support with the license. Then you can ask question and get help on your projects from technical support. They are very helpful. You could also post on the Wolfram Blog and see if you get anything. I don't believe its possible to get the code of the indicators inside the TradingChart function. If you hear anything back on that please let me know I would be interested in playing with that functionality as well. You could make your own function that and graph it with the ListLinePlot function.
