I don't know how to answer that because I'm not sure what your really asking.
I hesitated posting it because of all the politically correct ninnys would be offended (not saying you are) but I thought it was funny and I'm sure there are others that do as well but are afraid to say anything. I don't mind sticking my neck out a little. What a boring world it would be if we tried not to offend anyone.
This is a very cultural thing, and I believe that the joke works much better in the US than in Northern Europe.
The plot is based on two taboos - jokes about Jesus and homosexuality - and the double meaning, which can be attributed to the verb "to love". Both taboos still work in the US as the interdiction of a pictural representation of Mohammed works in the Islamic world. Remember those cartoons on Mohammed published by a Danish journalist.
The joke only works, if the taboos are there. That is the specific reason that I did not react to that plot. I am neither offended nor entertained, I am just bored. There is no contradiction between social norms and the contents on the spot. Homosexuality is as interesting a subject here as equal rights for men and women. Questions that have been answered during the last century and are no more good for jokes.
Interesting, how culture forms our behaviour. Three types of reactions are possible to that joke:
Islamic World (in case Mohammed was involved): offense
United States (high presence of Christian fundamentalists) : joke
Northern Europe (may be different in Catholic countries): indifference
As always, I have exaggerated the differences to make the point.
