OK, I am attaching v1, v2, v3, v4 here. I am starting a new poll, please vote in the poll -- and then very important come to this thread and tell me what you like or dislike about it, why you selected it, etc. I need as much feedback as possible.

There will also be a new light theme, but all of the interest so far seems to be on the new dark theme.

Nexus Dark v1 20230701

Nexus Dark v2 - Postbit 20230813

Nexus Dark v3 - Postbit 20230814

Nexus Dark v4 - Postbit 20230816

Mike

v3 for the darker gray contrast on the text boxes.

I still feeling like the light end end of gradient is too bright for the dark theme and is a little jarring next to everything else.

Please make pitch black theme version for people using OLED. Pure black screen is perfect

I finally voted. I picked "Light theme for me," because I don't really want a dark one. Maybe that's from spending too many years on a PC, which has generally a light theme. I've tried dark mode on my phone a few times and didn't like it enough to keep it, although it does sometimes look cool.

FWIW, if I had to choose a dark theme, it would be v4 (mostly dark) or v1 (very dark), in that order.

I do think that if you're going dark, the less-dark choices aren't the natural ones.

Will there be any choice about the light theme, or is there just one generic light one? (Not that I would really need that much choice, frankly. Something like the current/old FIO color scheme would do fine for me. )

Once it's in place and has been used for a while, there will be other ideas and adjustments. The exact shade of dark (or of light) does not have to be perfect in the beginning, anyway.

Bob.

I am difficult to please aesthetically but after a cursory look through all the contestants, I feel like they are all very good, aesthetically satisfying, and I could live with any, but do lean toward V3 as well for the same reason.
I do however concur with the above mentioned sentiment: the light end of the gradient is distracting-- it keeps pulling my gaze up towards it and I feel like I'm unconsciously struggling to keep my focus on the text in the forum threads.
Maybe just pull down the luminance of that light blue and you'll be there.
V1 Home page looks great.

DARK MODE HEALTH / VISION ISSUES

Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of blindness as we age. It is particularly bad, because it affects the tiny center part of our vision which is the only part that allows us to read and see charts clearly.

A very recent study showed that exposure to certain blue frequencies of light (which are also present in all white light, and many brighter shades of other colors), will permanently kill macular receptor cells in the eye in combination with the chemical Retinal.

The first advice I would give regarding dark mode is to just eliminate the blue pixels in the screen display, leaving just the red and green ones (which also combine to give yellows). In the RGB color palate, for example, instead of white text (RGB = 255,255,255), make it yellow (RGB = 255,255,0). Yellow text against a black background is nearly as readable as white text, but without the potential eye damage.

Making at least one "NO BLUE" option would be beneficial to most, if not all, of your members, whether or not they know it.

The only downside is that things that are only blue (showing only 0 for the R and G) would not display, but there are few things with only 0's for both of them, and when designing the site, it is easy to avoid the blues.

In any event, if you make the "themes" easy to switch on the screens, people can change quickly if there is a need to see something more clearly temporarily.

Having said all that, my next advice would be to use the pure black background wherever possible, perhaps with borders outlining sections. Readability is affected by foreground / background differences, and where there is colored text, it should be as bright as possible (but no blue, please) against a pure black background. Any other background color at all will reduce the readability.

Third advice - other theme options

Different monitors, graphics processors, etc. display color combinations differently. The screen that is wonderfully clear on your computer is nearly unreadable on some other monitors in the world, and vice-versa.

The more different themes you make available, the more users will be able to use your site. Why not give us all 4 themes you currently have, as options, and let us choose? Please include a fifth, "No Blue" option with the black background and yellow test. Many more color themes can be made available for members who are not yet concerned about their vision. Perhaps you could even make it possible for members to create themes for you, which you could add to the options without having to pay programmers to do them.

All the themes look like Visual Basic themes.

I like the Original version best.

Ok, today was first outbound test of new email template. Was a fail. I did see dark theme support on some email clients but had issues overall with the buttons.

Regrouping for a better round two.

We are still on the hunt for instances of "futures io" needing updating. If you find one, please report it. The only known one at this point is our Help Desk.

@Big Mike
How are you going to handle the change with the iOS app?
New download or rebrand the existing app?
