Hi guys,

All of us have been affected by COVID-19. But here in Ecuador, things are truly desperate. The number of homeless and/or hungry families on the street has skyrocketed in recent weeks.

The government is unable to provide any resources to assist these people. The government has stopped paying all salaries to nearly every government entity. There are no pensions being paid. There are no medical benefits being honored.

All typical commerce is almost entirely shutdown, in fact the country has been in complete lockdown where there is a curfew and very strict restrictions on when and who can leave their house.

There is no place for many people to find work, and some of them simply are not surviving and are falling through the cracks. The cracks, in fact, have become enormous.

We're going to help

For the month of June, futures io is running a Journal Challenge contest. What I want to do is tie in with that event, and donate ten meals for every new journal that is created/posted to on FIO during June. This will be donated by my wife and I, on behalf of the members of futures io. If you wish to help personally, please see below.

Journal Challenge thread:

So at the end of June, we will calculate how many journals participated in the event, and then we'll purchase the food and distribute it to those that are most in need (on the streets).

My wife and I started a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organized called Oasis Americas last year. This is our charity specifically for helping those in need, both in North America and South America.

We will be accepting additional donations from anyone on futures io that wishes to donate towards this cause. All donations are tax deductible, and will go entirely towards the purchase of food for those in need, in this case to those here in Ecuador that we can safely reach and handout meals to.

We will follow-up in this thread to provide updates on the amount of food we've donated from the journal event, as well as additional donations received.

If you wish to donate, you can do so here using PayPal:

Your donation will be anonymous, unless you chose to make a post. I will be posting each donation here in the thread, but without names.

Thank you,
Mike

Just as a side note, we get around 5 people per day ringing our outside gate looking for food. We've started giving them cans of tuna.

It's a really sad thing. These people are just walking the streets trying to find enough food for their family just for that day.

Last week, my wife was out buying groceries. A man literally tried to hand my wife his daughter and started crying, saying PLEASE TAKE HER she needs food, she needs a good life, I can't do it! I can't provide for her! Please help her! You take her and give her a good life!

This was a complete stranger, on the street, while my wife was buying vegetables. The daughter was around 2 years old. The man broke down and was in complete tears, almost having a panic attack.

It demonstrates how crazy things have become. We did help that man and we kept in contact with him, and the next day he had calmed down and apologized for his behavior, and said he would never give up his daughter. He was just so desperate in the moment because his family hadn't eaten in DAYS and he saw my wife in a nice Tahoe and knew his daughter would be cared for by her.

That is just crazy right? Please don't judge this man. He was just trying to feed his family.

To say that I am very proud of the community would be an understatement.

My wife and I are extremely grateful to have friends like you. We will have huge smiles on our faces as we hand food to those most in need, and you guys made it possible.

I have to share another story with you. Friday, our washing machine broke. We called our "normal guy", who came right away. He needed to buy a part, so my wife took him around because she is permitted to drive our truck on Friday's (determined by plate).

Anyway, the washer guy is in the passenger seat of our truck. My wife driving. All of the people begging for anything at every stop light. And my wife had previously loaded up the truck with a bunch of tuna cans, making it easy to hand those out (we talked about it one night, brainstorming how we could help these people, and decided on the tuna cans).

She asked the washer guy to help hand them out of the window while she drove, and he was in tears and crying by the end of their trip because so many families were in need. He was thanking her (él dijo, "y su esposo") so much for doing this. He said, I wish I could do this! My heart wants to do this for these poor people, but I can't afford to do what you are doing. Thank you so much for doing what you are doing.

He carried on explaining a few things. But in the end, my wife said "yes, you can do it" and pointed out that he can give an apple or piece of fruit, anything, but make the sacrifice even if it's something small.

Each of us can sacrifice something, when compared to how these people are living. My wife was taken aback by one sign in particular that simply read "Yes, we are Venezuelan, but we are as hungry as any Ecuadorians, and I pray you will help my three children". The thing is, the culture here has really turned anti-Venezuelan in recent years as so many migrate to get away from their home country (you can imagine why, where a loaf of bread costs two months salary). If she was in the States, the sign might read "Yes, I am Mexican..." for example.

That brought my wife to tears. She did stop and help her of course. Wouldn't you?

Mike

Everyone,

We purchased a couple thousand cans of tuna this week with your help! It was $1444.80.

I'll provide some pictures and receipt in coming days, but wanted to let you know we've already started handing out the tuna cans. After some trial and error we found that tuna cans are really as ideal as we can make these meals, for these reasons:

- Compact, lightweight
- Easy to transport for recipient and us
- Stays fresh
- High quality meal (protein)
- Manta is the tuna capital of the world!

We're also going to be adding water and a bag of chips or similar. We're trying to arrange somewhere to buy those in bulk.

Right now I have only the credit card receipt, I'm waiting for our distributor contact to invoice the foundation correctly then I'll post those scanned receipts.

Thank you to everyone for being so generous with your wallet, and your hearts!

What 2,000 cans of tuna looks like... being delivered to our storage unit alongside the house:

And yes I know, not supposed to be touching my face mask!

So a quick update...

My wife secured a deal from a local grocer to put two big sandwich buns (four pieces) in a single sealed bag, for 50 cents per package. We bought 500 to start, and will be giving that away with the tunas.

I'll post receipts in this thread when everything is collected and before the end of the month.

The 2,000 tuna can purchase receipts are attached. Sorry for the very poor formatting, it wasn't sent to me in the best format and I haven't finished setting up my replacement laptop so don't have the best tools to improve the formatting.

This tuna was $1,444.80, and Oasis Americas paid from the fundraiser.

Also, total donations as of this post are $3,055.16 after the 2.2% + $0.30 per PayPal fee (501c3 rate), which today I withdrew to pay for the above tuna as well as the upcoming purchases coming in a few more days. All transactions have been posted to this thread, but at the end of the month I plan to dump it to Excel or PDF from PayPal's site and post, anonymizing the data (deleting names) just to keep everything completely transparent.

(pasted screenshot)

I'm really thrilled about how well we've done! And still more time in the month, plus at the end of the month my wife and I will be donating 10 meals for each journal on the site as part of our Journal Challenge -- so much more to come!

I just stumbled upon this, didn't know you were doing it (or would have donated earlier). Thanks for the transparency. We will be donating.

Here are some more receipts:

1000 chips and drinks: $230.62 + $209.00 (two separate invoices)

1000 package of two buns: $500.00

1000 paper bags for food: $14.35

To go along with what I already posted on the tuna, which was $1444.80. So total expenses are $2398.77.

Also, total donations as of this post are $3,176.81 after the 2.2% + $0.30 per PayPal fee (501c3 rate), see screenshot:

We still need to purchase $778.04 of goods and give them away. See my next post on this...

As you guys know, my wife and I committed to donating 10 meals for each journal as part of the June challenge. There were 21 journals, so that's 210 meals.

However, we decided to increase that to 1,000 meals -- and have bought the 1,000 cans of tuna. This is a personal purchase. I'll ask my wife for that receipt.

This was made possible by you guys, and my wife and I are happy to help do our part!

Mike

For the balance of $778.04, my wife and I noticed a huge number of people still without masks and thought it would be a good decision to help them by giving them reusable masks.

An inexpensive large box of disposable masks breaks down to $0.60 cents per mask. If we were to give each person ten masks, that's $6.00. So instead, we feel like it's better to give them a cloth washable/reusable mask. We are working out the cost for this quantity, but estimate around $3.00.

I'll update once I have that info.

Also, I want to make the announcement that as of this post, any future donations sent to Oasis will be spent as necessary for our foundation on whatever issues need solving --- I am going to stop guaranteeing future donations will be marked as part of this June event, in other words. So just know, if you donate to Oasis using an earlier link, we will spend the money on a good cause to help those most in need, but we are going to stop this June event as of now.

That means the total raised for the event was $3,176.81. Great job guys!

OK, we got the firm quote back. $1.50 per mask, which is a nice cloth mask and re-usable. Plus, they are made here in Ecuador, so it's the added benefit of helping the local economy as opposed to mass-produced by China or similar. We actually use these masks here in our family, they are nice ones.

We placed an order of 500 masks. We plan to take delivery at the end of the month, as they are made by hand. Owe it to my wife for negotiating the price down to less than half what we pay normally, for this bulk order.

So 500 masks come out to $750. No receipt yet.

Attached is the invoice for my wife and I's personal donation, 20 boxes of tuna for 1,000 meals (1,000 cans). This is the invoice they provided (lol)... anyway, I don't mind because this isn't an Oasis Americas receipt just our own personal receipt.

We ended up slightly modifying this mask order to 375 adult masks @ 1.50/ea and 150 childrens masks @ 1.25/ea, the total remains $750. The adult masks works age 13 and up more or less, so it's just for small kids which is why only 150 were ordered.

I am not sure why exactly, but the mask order was slightly modified as you see from the invoice. In the end, we received 355 adult masks @ 1.34 each, and 145 childrens masks @ 1.12 each (before tax). Total after tax was 714.67.

OK, I need to post this correction. My wife reminded me what happened. They charged a fee for credit card. So the factura they generate doesn't show that fee for whatever reason, but our total outlay was $777.99.

Chase doesn't let me take screenshots within their app, so I am doing a screenshot of the email transaction alert I get:

Just a reminder to all (and myself) that $777.99 figure was targeted from this remaining balance that we identified prior to placing the order. I told my wife buy as many good masks as she could for $778. So after the credit card fee, that is where we landed.

As for why their invoice doesn't list the fee, I think that's unfortunate but probably they aren't going to change it. I'll have to ask my wife about it.

I know this is now an old thread but I wanted to say thanks to @Big Mike for doing this. I don't think it was necessary to document every penny spent but it actually is nice seeing where everything went, and seeing how it actually helped people. Well done.
