Hi guys,

Continuing in the tradition of encouraging journals on FIO, I am announcing a new Journal contest for September 2016.

The rules are extremely simple:

a) The contest begins September 1 and ends September 30. All decisions made by futures.io are final.

b) This thread that you are reading right now will act as the repository for all journals that are entered into the contest.

c) Your journal must be "powered by" NinjaTrader to be eligible to win. This means you must post charts/screenshots of your NinjaTrader platform in your journal on a regular basis.

d) The author of a journal can enter his/her futures.io journal into the contest by posting a link to his/her journal in this thread. Only the author of the journal can do this. Please post the link to the journal ONE TIME, AND ONE TIME ONLY in this thread.

e) Members of futures.io will cast their votes for the best journals by using the "Thanks" button on the post that the journal author has made in this very thread. This is why it is very important the author of the journal make only one post, because only one post will be used to count the total number of "Thanks Received" in this thread, and that is how the winners will be decided. Members can vote for as many separate journals as they want by following the same procedure.

f) There will be three prizes awarded, based on the highest number of "Thanks Received" per the above. The (3) prizes are: (1st place) Lifetime license to NinjaTrader ($999 value), (2nd place) 1-year annual license ($600 value), (3rd place) 1-year annual license ($600 value).

Thank you to @NinjaTrader for sponsoring this event. You can visit their website here:
Trading Software & Brokerage | NinjaTrader

My goal with these contests is to encourage the journaling process, as I firmly believe the more you participate in the journal process, the better trader you will become.

If anyone has any questions, please let me know. This thread will remain closed to posts until September 1st (contest start date).

Mike

Check out my journey as I go from SoftSoap to SoftGold (credit to @lemonsfor the journal name)

I started my journal a couple of days ago and it was honestly one of the best decisions I have made in my short trading career.
The biggest benefit I’ve gotten from it so far, is understanding that my biggest pitfall is in regards to psychology. With help from starting a journal here, I’ve started to make shifts from focusing on my trading execution and starting to prioritize what goes on in my head.

If you are having issues with trading psychology, I recommend you check my journal out as I will be focusing on this heavily!!!

Here’s some of what you can expect from my journal
  • Intraday
    • Psychology goals for the day
    • Trading plan and expectations
    • Snapshots of some of my entry / exit points along with a brief description
  • End of day
    • Summary of the day
    • Psychology goal summary of the day
    • 3 things I did well
    • 3 things I could’ve done better
  • End of week
    • Summary of the week
    • Psychology highlights and pitfalls I need to work on
    • P/L, expectancy, win%, other quick analyses
    • My best trade and the trade I will be sure to avoid in the future
  • End of month
    • Summary of the month
    • Psychology highlights and pitfalls I need to work on
    • P/L, expectancy, win%, other quick analyses
    • Risk of ruin analyses

So check out my journal as I get off the fence and into the path towards consistent profitability!

I must confess that Mr. SoftSoap really created standards for me of how to make journalling and posts! So hope he will forgive me that I took some of his structure as example and wrote my introduction note according his highly professional example!

I want to invite all to join my trading catwalk to consistentcy as profitable professional trader and check my journal called NQ Catwalk here

Don't be fooled by the name, I trade not only NQ but ES and FX futures. This September I'm trying to pass through qualification round to prop MESCapital so my journal will be updated daily becuase I'm obliged to trade every day during 20 trading sessions. So what you can expect from my journal:

Trading plan and expectations
Snapshots of some of my entry / exit points along with a brief description of my setups
Psychology summary of the day
Answers on questions of FIO members.

I will be glad to answer and discuss any topics with memebers of the community!

Welcome to Trading Catwalk!

As I prepare to embark with you on this journey, let me share the dream before the draft. My trials may reflect your own, and I write so that you can share in the rewards of my labor. I am no longer a beginner, yet I begin again and again.

I struggled to make it in trading. I came with the wrong thought: I can do whatever I want now. I had to pay for that thought. Trading remained difficult, but it was such an immersive activity which generated a state of deep concentration that has brought so much real freedom. Silent moments of truth are the ultimate treasures - states of flow, experiences of The Zone.

Real Life intervenes. Marriage. First child. Second child. Career. But I persisted with trading. I sat down at my desk early each morning and faced the realities of trading head on.

What caused the real breakthrough, what changed me, however was not the holy grail of a method but this: trading all the time. Don't let anybody tell you that you can't do it.

Create your own method. Make up something that will work for you! Keep breaking traditions, I beg you.

Hi All,

I started my journal a couple of days ago. Trading is quite a passion for me and it took me 20 years to take the bull by the horns and start trading for myself. If I think back on it now though, it is probably the way it should have been as I think there were some very important lessons in life that I had to learn before trading would bring me the joy and happiness it currently does.

I would love to have you all along for the adventure and would really appreciate any input into my journey. As I said in my first journal post, my hope is that this journal adds just as must value to you the reader as it does to me.

You can read my journal at:

Cheers,
Popsicle

Dear Sirs,
I am happy to take part in this Journal Challenge, which is going to be my second journal challenge.

Will this run be better than the first one where I tried to follow Topstep Trader Trading Combine rules and did not make it?

Started my journal here:

It is mainly for tracking my SIM automated trading system... a way to keep notes on improvements. It is SIM trading currently and is 100% automated, no discretionary trades. I am planning on going live with it soon, but want to make sure it is successful in SIM mode and am still finding some bugs that need to be fixed. It uses a dozen indicators that I have developed, uses machine learning, mean reversion, trend following and pattern recognition to decide on trades.

Hey Traders,

Here is my "Counting the Cost" trade journal.

Quoting
Luke 14:28-30 says:

28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’

I want to be able to count the cost and finish well, but I've never really used screenshots as a way to record my trades. I've always just imported my trades automatically into Excel to analyze them. I calculate fees and taxes on the trades as a way to help gauge my real profitability. Hopefully taking these screenshots each day will help me improve.

I appreciate any input you all have and look forward to learning as much as we can together!

All the best,
Dan

Hi all,

Done this a few times before, still struggling but always with new issues. One day they'll run out, but for the moment I'm trying to fix my anxious, early entries, and putting more attention to market conditions (how wide, strippy, consistent with standar PA it seems to be compared to previous days.)

My entries are scalps but I'll hold a runner to capture as much of a swing as possible. Entries are based on price action, order flow and I keep an eye on volume, cumulative delta momentum and a stochastics.

I've always learned something from the most upvoted journals in these contests, which I would not have been able to find otherwise. I'm sure this will continue.

Contest Entry

Every time I have gotten serious about journaling, I have made much better progress. So I'm entering here as well.

The accountability of being open to all really does make a difference.

I hope people will like and benefit from my journal, and I hope I will too. I also hope that everyone will read all the entrants' journals, and vote for any that have been beneficial. Journaling is the backbone of this forum.

I'm becoming semi-profitable in the Combine now, and I'll see if I can push through to passing it this month. It will have been a long haul when I do.

You may want to not start at the beginning. A good place would be here, the first post in September:

Thanks, I'll see you there.

Bob.

After taking a couple of months break from trading, I am back!

Did anything change during that time?

I am definitely fitter, have been more active, increasingly social with friends and more focussed at work. Will it translate to better and calmer trading?

You be the judge by the end of this month.

Hello FIO,

I'm adding my journal to this month's contest.

I'm in Los Angeles and trading CL around 5:30am - 7:30am pacific, give or take. The first chart you usually see in my daily post is going to be a 5000 volume bar, which gives me my outlook for the morning. All subsequent chsrts are usually going to be 1000 volume bar, which I use to enter and manage trades. I switch back and forth constantly between the two timeframes. I am currently trading one lot live on my own account. I don't use any indicators, just a lot of lines. I try to enter in places where I can put my stops outside of the lines, and go for wins of 30+ ticks.

The journal has been active since January, but if you want to see what I've been up to recently, probably start around page 8:

Also, I recently posted my "rules" which are more like daily reminders, such as "Wear proper pants while trading. If it's something you can do in your pajamas or underwear, then it's a hobby, not a profession." That post is here:

If you find value or entertainment in the journal, I hope you'll add a thanks here. That will encourage me to keep it public and continue to share my progress.

Thank you,
FlyingMonkey

Hi all!

I am a new member here at futures.io and also a new futures trader. Actually, I haven't traded futures live but did start a $150,000 trading combine at Topstep Trader and gotten through my first day of trading. Would you like to know how I did and follow along with me as I take you on my brand new trading adventure with Topstep Trader? Maybe you can help me pass my combine. If so, hit the "thanks" button and click the link to my journal below.

It's also my first trading journal ever so give me suggestions and tips on what I need to do to make my trading journal better. I want to thank SoftSoap for referring me to the FIO Journal Challenge. Thanks Softsoap!

First of all, I would like to say many thanks to all those participants who supported my journal. I understand it is not perfect becuase I started to experience bad strip at the middle of September and almost stop posting there. But nevertheless, thank You all for support,

Regarding the question I must admit that journalling here definitelly helped me to stay cool and calm. Yes, I was forced to make some tough decisions conserinig my trading, but I saved my trading account. When I was in such strip before ususally it ended by blowing out the account completely. Second, I discovered a lot of interesting journals to follow and find some good ideas how to handle with my own issues. @SoftSoap and @bobwest really did good job and I really appreciate their detaled input. It was really good reading, friends and I'm sure that i will be.

Thank You all again! Good luck in next contests! Let't all Your longs go up and all Your shorts bankrupt, traders!

Hi Mike,

I've done a few of these contests now, and I've had my journal up (off and on) for a long time.

Every time I get active again with the journal, I start making fewer mistakes, start seeing better trading, start thinking more clearly.

Of course, there's another side to everything: because I have to explain what I'm doing, I'm more accountable and I have a harder time making BS excuses for things -- but that's a good thing.

It can be a little hard to be exposed in public, but it has only good effects. Also, there's intelligent and understanding feedback from the people reading it, which I would miss out on without the journal.

Sometimes I take a break from the journal, but it's been worth coming back to.

I recommend keeping a public journal for anyone who wants to improve.

Bob.

Wow! I am so humbled to have won this contest. Thank you to everyone who voted for me, and thank you to @Big Mike and @NinjaTrader for everything you do to improve the trading community, you are the real MVPs!

The positive impact this competition and journaling has had on my trading has been tremendous, here are a few key trading-related improvements:
  • It has encouraged me to be more disciplined
  • It has helped me improve my trading routine, prioritizing things that are important and removing things that aren't
  • It has encouraged me to be vulnerable and open about my biggest flaws as a trader and as an individual
  • It has encouraged me to be subjective about myself and not just see the things I want to see
  • It has forced me to be accountable
  • It has given me an inside view of my past thoughts
  • It has encouraged me to better understand myself

However, journaling and being active in the FIO community has done more for me than just improving my trading process, it has had a deep personal impact (that will trickle down to trading of course). Here's how:
  • It has helped me cope with the lack of human interaction in this career. Trading is a lonely life, so while my wife is at work, it is me and my dog for the whole day. Being able to share my experiences through a journal knowing that there are other people out there reading makes me feel less 'lonely' haha
  • To top my point above, I've made some great connections with other traders who have gotten in touch with me either through my journal or PM. I love expanding my network with other traders and like-minded people, so please reach out to me if you want to talk!
  • I've also become attached to the FIO community. Every day I check to see what @chipps1983 did in the NQ, how @bobwest is doing on his combine, how @citikot is doing on his journey, how much @rocksolid68 is up today, and I get excited. I love reading other trader's journeys, seeing how they deal with their struggles, and seeing their seeds from their hard work come into fruition. I find myself cheering for them and many others at FIO. Their experiences inspire me, and excite me to improve as a trader
  • Overall it has made me happier in my trading career!
  • Lastly, the prize will help me out a lot. $1,000 might not be a lot to most of you, but to someone like myself who is just starting out as a trader, every little bit helps. Specially when you are in the capital preservation stage

Thank you again. I want to let you all know that the quantity and quality of posts in my journal, as well as involvement with the FIO community will only increase from here.

Cheers!

Congrats to @SoftSoap, @bobwest and @citikot, it is well deserved! All three of you have excellent journals that I have personally learnt a lot from.

Journaling has given me the biggest single step boost in my short trading career. It has allowed me to organise my thoughts around all aspects of being a successful trader. The discipline of thinking through every step of the trading day and putting it down in writing solidifies so many aspects of trading for me.

Other than that, reading other peoples journals and realising that you are not the only one struggling with this process, seeing how they solved certain problems and figuring out which of those solutions work for you is incredibly powerful.

Thanks FIO for an amazing community!

I think it means that you now have a license to kill (the markets). Soft 007, Agent of soap. ?

P.S. Triclosan-free agent of soap! You won't get infected before you wash your hands of a trade!

Reading stuff like that makes me wish I picked a better name. Oh why did I have to put away the soap before I made my FIO account

Lol, no worries. I always liked the idea of softsoap. It seems a cuddly soap. Gentle, smooth. You know...soft.

Congrats @SoftSoap! Glad you won!
Thank you for also showing me your journal from another forum and introducing me to this community. (Name is itradeRisk from elsewhere) I've been sitting back reading a lot and enjoying my stay. I look forward to continuing to read your journal and following your journey.

I'm encouraged to start my own journal and document my day to day trading.

Thanks! Glad to hear you are enjoying FIO. The community is awesome and full of knowledgeable traders, and the admins do a good job of keeping trolls away.

You won't regret your decision of starting a journal!

Those that participated in journaling, please take a moment and reply and tell me what the effect was on your trading. How did it benefit you?

I've kept a journal since my first days starting out as a trader, but not publicly. Since I started keeping my journal here on the forum at the beginning of this calendar year there have been some added benefits. One of the most important changes was it demonstrated how much my ego played into my honesty with myself about failures / successes in trading. When my journal was private, I could fail spectacularly and repeatedly and the only person I had to worry about reading it was me. It seems to me that actually limits the benefits of failure. I could also go on rather non-productive emotional tangents and feel little embarrassment. But with a public journal, even an anonymous one, I find myself taking it more seriously. I'll use a loose analogy -- It's more like each post is a public earnings announcement for my business. If I'm going to post crap earnings, I better have a growth story behind it. Failures need to be turned around quickly into plans for future success. This is pushing me (I hope) to flail around a bit less, behave more professionally, iterate more quickly, and latch onto good practices and discard bad ones at a more aggressive pace.

Congrats to the winners! Encourage everyone to keep journaling.

-FM

I must admit that keeping the journal public did have a positive impact on my trading. It just kept me from taking more losses and revenge trading and other bad habits. I have had my best trading month so far in terms of performance and statistics.

I am looking forward to the next challenge!

FIO, have you ever considered changing the voting mechanism? Like letting people vote after the challenge ends not when it starts?
