As I'm sure you know, the rule for development projects that has proven itself over time, again and again -- and I'm not joking or being cynical -- is to make your absolute best estimate, taking into account everything you know, and giving a large cushion for over-runs, and then double it.

I used this rule for a long time, both for estimating my own time and for scheduling others, and I never found it to over-estimate a job.... usually it under-estimated it.

I'm hoping, of course, that this case proves me wrong. But I'm just saying....

Good luck in any case. You have to have a target date, so taking your best shot is still the best idea, even though you know it has to be taken with a grain of salt.

Bob.

Look at how old the first post in this thread is. I'm anxious to get this done, correctly. It needs to be done.

Comment: I like the new site. Will take some getting used to but now that I see it materially, I think the rebranding will work. Congrats.

@Big Mike Have you thought about an option on your new site to donate to your forum and also one to donate to your favorite charities?

@Big Mike Have you thought about an option on your new site to donate to your forum and also one to donate to your favorite charities?

So I've been toying with a lot of ideas. I'll go ahead and throw them out here, but with a huge disclaimer -- THEY ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! So if you love or hate the idea, just tell me but don't overreact...

On the new site (new framework) I am toying with the idea of allowing individual members to pay money to other members on the site. Call it a "buy me a beer" button, or similar. The concept of 'buy me a beer' is to keep the monetary amount small per individual, but together it could add up to something for the one that made the post/content that everyone is appreciating so much.

Just using @gomi as an example, if there was a "buy me a beer" option and people could send say around $5.00 to @gomi to express their thanks for all that he's done, then over the years @gomi could have maybe earned a few thousand dollars.

There is a real fine balancing act here. The community is built on helping others. I do not want to turn it into something where people expect to get paid in order to provide help. But I also want to encourage more people to help others more.

As for donations to me personally or the site, there is no such option today nor planned. I do have multiple charity events each year where I give away a lot of memberships in exchange for donations to the charity, and I plan to continue that. The next event will be next month in fact.

Mike

@Big Mike congrats on the name change and trying to take it to the next level. You have a good heart my friend and luck on yr end. am going to pen some thought which is just being me and my 2cs...so feel free to ignore......however the thoughts stem from your thought expressed....community built to help others.

A)
These are just observations and since i joined. I had stumbled upon this community when the name was BMT and thought it was good to join as saw activity being posted. but i joined out of curiosity and the intent that maybe can gather thoughts from well rounded traders. Maybe if in the new framework there is some web/search optimization done maybe it will really help:-
1) when a person outside of futures.io is searching for beginning trading using search engines ...their search lands them to the community
2) on landing.....perhaps atleast some section which either takes them thru webinars which the community thinks are good to go thru for beginners or otherwise in trading. Even if the content is available by becoming Elite..but a tab will make a difference i think. Something generic and not specific to a vendor/style. so a drop down like where we have Forum/Elite/etc....a tab for Beginners. I guess this maybe good.... or if the community thinks its good to point to "Big Mikes Trading advice thread"...so be it. But some pointers ...maybe good since the site is built for that purpose.

B)
For the Buy a beer..i think it's great idea. The option should be however left to the person buying...weather its 1 or 5 or any amount. I dont think anyone has an expectation....but the buying power should be left to the individual buying. There are many posts out there which deserves a beer...and the framework should allow also any beers to futures.io or if buying a beer to an individual a seamless proceeds to futures.io part or full of the beer money.

C) I really like the ranking page in quick links.....and at times also see who is awarded the postings award. This tells me how good their posts are. I feel this should be displayed on landing on the thread or when looking at someone's profile.

D) To me in life...it has always been about mentor-ships or shadowing. I like amongst many on the site @tigertrader @mrmuggins or @rahulgopi posts irrespective of it being numerous posts or subtle little. Likewise a mentor can be in a development front such as @Silvester17 or @gomi and of-course many vendors here on futures.io. If there was a way to show how many people have a particular person as a mentor "lol of-course virtual" ....it will help. Now there can be other schools of thoughts....but i think a button for mentor should be defined if going for a framework.

E) Also I think many site sponsors give discounts to Elite. Not sure if everyone does so. Maybe a good to have thing where site sponsors also pass some discounts to members. well nothing to be enforced....but just a reco. and a landing page which shows site sponsors at a glance.

lol......too many suggestions in mind and probably many of them even not listed here...as this is itself too long.

will always be a supporter. Just thought should speak out @Big Mike. As mentioned feel free to ignore...but these were just my 2cs.

cheers
s

I like the idea of a "buy a beer" option as I'm sure the receiving member probably won't get rich..but might help with all the time involved not just in let's say programming an indicator...but also for the countless responses to futures.io members questions. Yes @Fat Tails and @gomi come to mind...

Also, I realize that I do not contribute nearly as much as I would like to (read I don't have anything significant to say), but I would like to continually show my support and a futures.io donation/charity donation option would be an excellent way to show it.

thanks man!

Johnny

Bob.

The problem with IT projects is that the doubling rule also applies if you've already factored it in

How often are you guys using the "List Attachments" feature within threads?

I am trying to determine the priority of re-creating this on the new framework.
