it needs to be more precise, a search on 'wave' by user sharky returns 4 thread. Click on thread will always start on page 1 so it it is still a hit or miss.
page 1 of the first thread returns 'wave' by david_R
page 1 of the second thread returns wave 95 by sharky
page 1 of the third thread return neither 'wave' or sharky, why is it there?
page 1 of the fourth thread returns wave 95 by sharky

So I don't need to see the first thread and the third thread it seems.

On some page or other of the first thread, there will be a post that matches on both "wave" and "sharky", but you won't know which one without going through every post. On some page of the third thread there will be a post with both "wave" and "sharky", but you will also have to go through every post to find it.

You can select "Show Results as Posts" at the bottom of the search screen, and only get the posts that match.

If you are saying that the results should start with the first post in the thread that matches your criteria, instead of the first post in the thread, that might be a useful option. But that is not very different from using the "Posts" option, since it will put you into the thread at the point the post occurs. Plus, selecting "Posts" for the results lets you jump to the next matching post without scrolling through the thread....

Bob.

Edit: I just saw Mike's reply about filtering by who started the thread. If I misunderstood, and this was what was meant, well, "never mind."

So you want to be able to filter by who started the thread, not just who posted in it. Right?

Mike

I see I also have to select show by post. I skip this step, in my mind result by post is given I guess. If I want by thread then I click on thread title after I see the correct post.

Another question: is 200 pages is the limit of 'find all post by'? for example all post by cory returns 190 pages, started since 2009 but 'find all post by fat tails' only returns 200 pages since 2011.

All background tasks have finished.

Guys, I need everyone to do a very thorough check for any and all problems.

Mike

Not much time right now, but I did a quick check on the "last page" bug, looking at your thread. It's OK. The last page is 101 now, but navigation is working, no phantom last page.

I may have some time tomorrow to go through the list as well as try something new.

Bob.

I believe the current site is limited to 200 pages. But the new site should have no limit.

I would like to be able to "search this thread" and see the "entire post" and not just the first sentence.
This would be an enormous help for large threads.

Keyword "Help" button to show what operators can be used to enhance the search precision ("", *, ?????,+,-,) I am always wondering what is available.

We need search expressions and operators that permit flexible searches. For all I know, we may actually already have them, but I have no idea if we do, or what they are, which is part of @Camdo's point.

I have tried a few things, mostly just grouping terms within quotes, but am not sure what works and what does not, so mostly I just take my chances.

There are search engines that support operators for grouping, exclusions, wild cards, "regular expressions" and more.

I suggest that a decision be made about what to support, and then, contrary to @Camdo's suggestion, not put them behind Help, but actually just have them as a legend right on the search form.... Mainly because, basically, this stuff is hard to remember, and even to understand if you're not always using it, but it can be helpful when you need it.

Bob.

Well there's quite a few pages. I don't know if it has been mentioned already but, a nice feature would be when you click on a post. You are able to show all the replies and just able to Scroll down. If it has been mentioned already, sorry. Just wanted to provide some feedback

There will not be a threaded view (nested replies to one post), sorry. All replies are time based.

Search enhancement suggestion:

Finding a topic within a large thread can be a challenge if the key words are also generally used.
To aid in that search, a histogram of search hits per 100 words within a thread could be useful. Areas of high concentration would indicate a high probability that the keyword is actually being discussed and not just generally used.

IPS is currently debugging the avatar issue that cropped up with this last update.

Has no one else found any new problems with the current beta site?
