When I wanted to thank Quick Summary Posts I found it was not possible (no button for that), but...

How some people can and I don't have a button for that?

Through tapatalk probably. You aren't supposed to be able to.

Wouldn't it be interesting looking to v5.0?.

I think Quick Summary Posts are very useful. Thanking it, we promote it.

By other side it's not logocal that there is a way out of the forum (Tapatalk) IMO.

To give an idea about feature upgrades, here is one that most people on futures.io (formerly BMT) will enjoy.

The ability to simply drag and drop screenshots into posts, or Ctrl-V paste images from your clipboard into your post.

Just one of many, many examples.

Sent from my LG Optimus G Pro

I assume that this is also means multi image selection and uploading. Now you have to select image by image, the new futures.io (formerly BMT) will allow you to select multiple images and upload all of them with one click?

Yes, but ultimately you should be able to do two things:

a) Ctrl-V your image into a post, if it is in your clipboard.

b) Drag your image (or files) into the post from your desktop/explorer.

Yes, I've already prepared a separate server for this and will deploy the beta once it's available.

ah ok. ya i posted the same on the IPB test board where they are taking feature request for the underly software. saving links to post via bookmarks is so 2000 and wonky. also is telling someone to setup an account or go elsewhere for onenote or evernote type service. point of a forum is to keep your users on the forum. im actually surprised it wasnt already implemented in their software.

No need of Keyword(s) or User Names in the searches. What for?: to be able to do powerful searches. Example: "threads of the category Trading Journals updated from my last visit"; it's no related to Keyword(s) or User Names.

P.S.: OK, @madLyfe

I would have to think about the requirements or features, but I think we have a lack about to have notifications over edited posts.

Perhaps it's not easy to develop a fine function about it, but here is the suggestion.

Please clarify what you are talking about. Right now if a post is edited more than 5 minutes after it was made, there is a notification in the post.

When a user is on your ignore list, and someone else quotes their post, right now that post is shown. Would like to have it so that when a user is on your ignore list, you also don't see their quoted post so you can just pretend they don't even exist.

Step beyond that would be to where it doesn't even show you that the ignored user had posted at all.

Like in the 'new posts' list, etc? Yes, I'm in agreement.

Or do you mean where you don't see the "ignored" post summary box like you do now?

Both.

But I can see how if you didn't know there was an ignored post that it could mess up the flow and understanding of a thread.

I mean when have read a post, we know what is in it. But if this post is edited and changed, then we don't know now the content of the post. Maybe the change is not substantial, but many times the change is important, and now we are not notificated that the post has changed.

Might be an idea if there was a change log on the post so you could see previous versions of a post if it's been changed.

I know this may be more DB intensive because it would be adding multiple versions of a post to the table... but just an idea.

That already exists, but it's only for administrators. It isn't practical to make old revisions public, because sometimes a revision is made to correct a privacy mistake (uploaded sensitive info).

A better option might be to allow posts to be edited up-to 60 minutes, and then not edited beyond that. Long enough to correct type-o's or fix obvious problems.

I talked about to have ignore threads.

I go every day to "new posts" function. I use to have 3 or 4 pages of threads with new posts. And many of them I decided not to follow, but now I have to read every day its titles just to ignore. If we could declare a thread ignore list, the new post list would be very reduced (threads not in the ignore list, and new threads), and this is a big amount of time in a year.

BTW I want to say that I find many very good threads and posts in them, but so extense for me, and unfortunately, I have to select and prioritize because of this horrible issue called time (a human figuration, btw).

Could it be, it's an idea as you say, but with a notification that has been a change, that is the center of the question.

I can see having a thread be ignored if you have placed the thread starter on ignore. But I don't agree with ignoring other threads in their entirety really. There is already the option to ignore a particular subforum, like if you want to ignore subforums about trading platforms that don't pertain to you, or ignore foreign language threads --- you can already do that today.

Is different to ignore a futures.io (formerly BMT)er (all his posts and threads) than ignore just some threads IMO.

Maybe add the ignore thread to where it doesn't show up in new post page. But you can still view the thread.

Kinda like a reverse subscription.

Personally I don't use new post at all, I go an subscribe to the threads I want to read and then check my CP daily to make my rounds through the different threads I want to read or comment on.

My two cents is that the 60 minutes would be too tight. I'm not sure what the edit window is now, but I could easily notice or remember an error much later than that.

My two cents is that the 60 minutes would be too tight. I'm not sure what the edit window is now, but I could easily notice or remember an error much later than that.

Bob.

Currently 5 minutes without the notice, and 24 hours total.

Please leave it at 24 hours. I often notice mistakes in my posts several times after thinking that I had found all the typo's or something I left out. I appreciate the 24 hours.

After all, it's what you learn AFTER you know it all, that counts!

I think the 24 hours is pretty good. Sometimes it takes me a long time to realize I made a mistake, especially if I'm posting late at night, finish the post, go to bed, and don't look at it again or think about it until 8-10 hours later, if not more.

drag&drop of attachments such as charts into ones posts would be great.

Oh and please leave it at 24hours, if I use vvScreenshot I may not look into the thread until after the session, but sometimes the upload is not working ie chart missing & stuff..

im obv just probing here, but how are you feeling about the current state of IPB and its release which is right around the corner? i know you are busy with life where you are and upcoming vacations, im just looking for an update not really a ETA.

Honestly, not good. I am disappointed. It just means a great deal more custom work to get it where I want it. I won't roll out a bad product.

I might wait for a dot release before making the switch on futures.io (formerly BMT), although I do still fully intend to deploy the release to a beta testing environment once I can.

Now that IPB 4.0 is released, my plan is to use one of the extra servers I have in Chicago and install IPB 4 on it after I return from vacation in late June.

That stage will primarily focus on how the import went from the point of view of just posts/thread/user tables.

I am trying to move the timetable up slightly. Thursday two 1TB Samsung 850 Pro's will be installed on one of futures.io (formerly BMT)'s servers in Chicago (Xeon E3-1275 v2, 32GB), as the current 2x256GB config is at capacity. I'll do a clean install from there.

This means I should be able to see how the initial pass at conversion to IPB 4.0 goes prior to me leaving on vacation.

It's the same CPU hardware as the current production futures.io (formerly BMT) server, but given that IPB 4.0 is supposed to be far better optimized for performance than the current site, I didn't see a need to upgrade the hardware further.

The hardware (clean install) is ready to go on "atlantis" (server name). Working on configuring all the backend software this weekend (nginx, mariadb, php, etc etc etc).

Have spent a lot of time this week getting the underlying components ready. Have purchased the IPB licenses as of today, and this weekend I hope to finally do the first database migration and see where we stand in regards to the most basic import results (thread/post/user content).

I've also been giving more thought to the "skin" and visual appearance. Obviously, futures.io (formerly BMT) itself needs an overhaul/major facelift. Originally I said that the new migration would adopt a similar skin to the current skin so that there would not be a drastic change in appearance overnight.

However, the more I think about this and consider its feasibility from a technical standpoint, the more it seems unlikely.

Instead, I think it likely will be best to start a 'clean slate' visual approach on the new site, for now simply called futures.io (formerly BMT) 5.0 beta. In order to get users gradually accustomed to the change, I think the best approach is to simply make it available to them for preview in the coming months.

So the plan is to initially have access to the beta site limited to just myself, then open it to all Market Wizards, then open it to all Elite Members. This process will take months, during which time there will be a lot of development and changes on a regular basis. But by the time I am ready to open it to all Elite Members, I hope to have a fairly polished site and the majority of the user base can then start to become accustomed to the new interface.

Users won't be able to select which site they want to participate on, unfortunately. The beta site will basically be "read-only" for all current futures.io (formerly BMT) content, so you can see how existing posts/threads work. New content will be temporary content only and will be deleted once the beta site is gone. Permanent content will have to be created on the current futures.io (formerly BMT) site.

That said, while new content must be created on the current site until the beta site is switched "on", users will be able to read/search/view content on the beta site, allowing them to get used to the interface.

i think you can switch between themes pretty easily, so why not just have version like this and one for whatever direction you want to take futures.io (formerly BMT) style wise. people can then use whichever if it bothers them that much and phase out the older with time.

Due to the major core differences in the product, it will be extremely time consuming and expensive to duplicate the current futures.io (formerly BMT) theme to the new site. I would rather spend the time and budget not on duplicating an old out of date interface but instead on developing a new modern one.

The post appearance is quite simple, the issue is with all the rest of the theme and its appearance. It is not easily to illustrate in a post, I will provide more concrete examples with screenshots soon.

I'll be inviting certain members, regardless of their Wizardly status, to help me test. The most important aspect of testing is to find real bugs and give feedback, but to also find users that completely understand what is going on.

For example, I don't want to invite "Joe" to beta test and then have Joe tell his friends on futures.io (formerly BMT) the new site is shit, nothing works, he can't find his way around, he likes the old site better -- etc.

Instead, I need "Bob" who understands that the initial test is going to be default skins with no customizations, and that we will slowly be building all the features of the current site on the new site, and need help testing those with the understanding that things WILL change and that you may even like the way something was at first in the beta and it gets changed later in the beta to something you like less.

I want feedback naturally, but also I need users that understand I can't make every single user happy with every single selection/choice on the site, so I have to make decisions for the majority.

The real hurdle here is people strongly dislike change, even when the change is for the better. So I need to select users that basically have an open mind, and allow me to do all the heavy lifting on getting the new site ready and while providing me with feedback that I can use during the way.

@Big Mike

Would is be possible to have a script that autocompletes a mention based on usernames?

Say I start to type @Big and it list all the users with that name for me to complete the mention. Would be a great way to ensure mentions aren't misspelled.

IPB 4 is up and running on the beta site. Unfortunately, I cannot begin migrating data from the current site to the new one because I just found out they've not released the migration tool yet (despite their website saying it is supported).

Waiting for their dev team to contact me with further info.

Migrating the data is really the first step before any of the real work can begin.

OK, so back from vacation.

Now that IPB has "officially" made 4.0 gold, they are starting to go back and fill in some rough edges. They've basically said the first push was just to get the framework done (all new), and now they will go back and start adding features and streamlining the interface, performance, etc.

Unfortunately, there is still no upgrade path from vb 3.8 to IPB 4, despite a misleading page on their website. Their recommended path is vb 3.8 to ipb 3.0 then to ipb 4, and the problem is I will need to do this conversion countless times during the test process, so I really, really don't like their suggestion.

I've asked them again if they will give me a better time frame, it's been a month since I last asked, so here's hoping...

Some good news, it looks like I will be participating in the alpha and beta testing of a native converter created by the IPS team themselves.

I am waiting for the converter at this point, I need to convert the existing database before anything of value can be tested.

Some good news, it looks like I will be participating in the alpha and beta testing of a native converter created by the IPS team themselves.

Mike

Well after pressing them for a time frame, they can give me none. Nothing. So to me that means they aren't even actively developing the converter yet, which means probably 3-4 months and not weeks or days.

I hope I am wrong. I am basically at a standstill until I get the converter.

I've ended up putting out a bid to their project providers for a custom conversion to get me going, and a budget of $5,000. Hopefully the talent exists to get the conversion going quickly, we'll see.

One of many new improvements in futures.io (formerly BMT) 5.0 is the ability to follow new content. Not just follow threads, but you can follow Downloads, follow Users, and I plan to also get the webinars category organized, so it means you can automatically follow new webinars or only ones of a specific author or category.

When you follow a user, it means you would get notifications when they post new content. All notifications are fully customizable.

Below is just a small example from a test site:

Another great thing in futures.io (formerly BMT) 5.0 is the ability to have private conversations with groups of people.

Instead of PM's being a one-on-one, they can be many-to-many. It means that you can add/invite multiple people to join an existing conversation.

This essentially means you can create your own private forum with small groups of people.

Mike, do you know if it will integrate well with tapatalk?

Yes, although it will no longer be "required" for browsing on mobile/tablet like it is more or less today. That's because the current site is not responsive (not optimized for non-desktop experience), but the futures.io (formerly BMT) 5.0 launch will be responsive, and therefore you could browse on your phone or tablet w/o Tapatalk and retain the experience.

Still, for those that prefer Tapatalk, I plan to have support for it in futures.io (formerly BMT) 5.

Consensus after speaking with a few developers is to go ahead and setup a stand-alone side-by-side installation of IPB 3.4. So I have been trying to do that all day, and just running into a couple ridiculous issues that are slowing me down. Hope to get it sorted tonight.

Then the first pass of the initial database conversion from vb 3.8 to ipb 3.4, then ipb 3.4 to ipb 4.0. LOL. Pull my hair out. Will update here once I get that far.

I'm trying to get it to a spot where I can invite some of you to start logging into the beta site, and then we will collectively start making what is going to a monster list of things that are wrong and/or missing that need to be hired out to the developers for fixes.

hopefully it has a better search capacity, for example search for somebody said something. Also search attachments has Exclude extensions: box only, it should also have Include extensions: box.

It definitely does, although I'll be making major enhancements.

Two things:

1) I've stopped making enhancements to futures.io (formerly BMT)'s underlying user experience for some time now, because I knew it was EOL and I needed to migrate away from vb to something else. Once futures.io (formerly BMT) v5 is off the ground, I can get back to creating new tools to enhance the features of the site.

2) When I do make the beta site of futures.io (formerly BMT) v5 available for testing, it is critically important everyone fully understand we're starting at a ground-up/basic/vanilla/no customization framework aka "factory default", and it will take some time to port over all the futures.io (formerly BMT) goodies we are used to. Most of these will be ported before the site can ever go "live" into production use.

The initial conversion to IPB 3.4 is still ongoing. It's excessively and ridiculously slow. This is not a hardware limit, it's purely terrible conversion code. I've heard the IPB 4 converter isn't much better, unfortunately.

Maybe later today I can start the 3.4 to 4 converter.

LOL, yeah this PM conversion is the last time consuming one needed to finish. Then, I will backup/dump everything and proceed with the 3.4 to 4.0 migration. That will take another couple days.

According to my mad math skills, this PM conversion will finish just in time for me to fall asleep, wasting the overnight opportunity to do some more converting to IPB 4.

It looks like IPB 4 is already full compatible with PHP 7 out of the box. This bodes well for the future. Once we are up and running, I'll look at switching to PHP 7 as it should yield a significant boost in performance.

Initial conversion to IPB 3.4 finished, but it seems all the forum permissions didn't get migrated. So I am manually resetting them all, will take me some time.

Some progress being made. This is IPB 3.4 (old). Just checking things a bit, before backing up this point in time and then continuing by migrating this to IPB 4.0 (where the real fun begins).

Also this is just the first of many of these conversions. I will have to start the process over from scratch several more times before everything is perfect, that is why I am not stopping after hitting a couple errors already (missing avatars for most users, and also it seems my personal user account has wrong post counts --- but others seem OK).

If you are a Market Wizard and want beta access, please reply to this thread. A reminder to all: this is only a beta test. All new content on the beta site will be deleted. Only beta testers can see new content there.

For beta testers, I need:

-- Database was converted as of Monday, Aug 3 midnight --

1. Do your post counts look accurate? Thread counts?
2. Do your private messages look accurate?
3. Are your access permissions correct? Can you get to everything you should be able to, and not to anything you shouldn't?
4. Can you access forum content, images, file attachments correctly?

From there the most important aspect is testing! I need you to report bugs to this thread -- not on the beta site threads. Include a screenshot if it's not obvious what the issue is, and I'll add the bugs to the list.

I'll open it up beyond Market Wizards once we get a little further in the process. Right now, I need a high level list of broken items so I can get the developers to start working on them.

I'll help once @bobwest's tired.

I would suggest maybe asking a few others as well as MW status tends to come and go, there are many more qualified than me to get involved.

Some of the Elite's that have been following this thread are free to PM me if they are interested, I'll keep it small for now but need some eyes for testing.

OK, about to backup the 3.4 site and dump, then start the migration to IPB 4. The 3.4 site should stay online for testing.

This is very resource intensive, the beta site will be slow until it's done.

1. my post count is accurate. threads started by me are not even close. IPB is showing maybe 1/8 of the threads ive started.

2. my private msgs look pretty accurate. they are displayed differently but im pretty sure they are all there.

3. my permissions are off, i can not get into the traders hideout.

4. doing a brief scan i notice that the images in my journal do not show up. they just show the links to the images. im guessing this is because of the script your wrote to pull in remote images and store them on futures.io (formerly BMT).

dont believe anything you hear and only half of what you see

4. Link me a specific URL please so I can look at it. There is a good chance you are right, but want to double check.

Yes, that is the image caching bug as 'critical #1'

As per @madLyfe, post counts appear way off and no permission to get into my journal or downloads areas, also profile topics and post subjects appear to be a random selection.

'My Content' links go to first thread posts, so post numbers not yet done presumably.

No images and embedded http links in posts refer back to old futures.io (formerly BMT) content, I guess preprocessor still needed, and probably already on your massive todo list.

Staggers me that what we know as old futures.io (formerly BMT) was so far above standard product out-of-box level. Nice job, looking forward to the next one, good luck!!

Cheers
