Have spent a lot of time this week getting the underlying components ready. Have purchased the IPB licenses as of today, and this weekend I hope to finally do the first database migration and see where we stand in regards to the most basic import results (thread/post/user content).

I've also been giving more thought to the "skin" and visual appearance. Obviously, futures.io (formerly BMT) itself needs an overhaul/major facelift. Originally I said that the new migration would adopt a similar skin to the current skin so that there would not be a drastic change in appearance overnight.

However, the more I think about this and consider its feasibility from a technical standpoint, the more it seems unlikely.

Instead, I think it likely will be best to start a 'clean slate' visual approach on the new site, for now simply called futures.io (formerly BMT) 5.0 beta. In order to get users gradually accustomed to the change, I think the best approach is to simply make it available to them for preview in the coming months.

So the plan is to initially have access to the beta site limited to just myself, then open it to all Market Wizards, then open it to all Elite Members. This process will take months, during which time there will be a lot of development and changes on a regular basis. But by the time I am ready to open it to all Elite Members, I hope to have a fairly polished site and the majority of the user base can then start to become accustomed to the new interface.

Users won't be able to select which site they want to participate on, unfortunately. The beta site will basically be "read-only" for all current futures.io (formerly BMT) content, so you can see how existing posts/threads work. New content will be temporary content only and will be deleted once the beta site is gone. Permanent content will have to be created on the current futures.io (formerly BMT) site.

That said, while new content must be created on the current site until the beta site is switched "on", users will be able to read/search/view content on the beta site, allowing them to get used to the interface.

Comments?

i think you can switch between themes pretty easily, so why not just have version like this and one for whatever direction you want to take futures.io (formerly BMT) style wise. people can then use whichever if it bothers them that much and phase out the older with time.

dont believe anything you hear and only half of what you see

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Due to the major core differences in the product, it will be extremely time consuming and expensive to duplicate the current futures.io (formerly BMT) theme to the new site. I would rather spend the time and budget not on duplicating an old out of date interface but instead on developing a new modern one.

The post appearance is quite simple, the issue is with all the rest of the theme and its appearance. It is not easily to illustrate in a post, I will provide more concrete examples with screenshots soon.

I'll be inviting certain members, regardless of their Wizardly status, to help me test. The most important aspect of testing is to find real bugs and give feedback, but to also find users that completely understand what is going on.

For example, I don't want to invite "Joe" to beta test and then have Joe tell his friends on futures.io (formerly BMT) the new site is shit, nothing works, he can't find his way around, he likes the old site better -- etc.

Instead, I need "Bob" who understands that the initial test is going to be default skins with no customizations, and that we will slowly be building all the features of the current site on the new site, and need help testing those with the understanding that things WILL change and that you may even like the way something was at first in the beta and it gets changed later in the beta to something you like less.

I want feedback naturally, but also I need users that understand I can't make every single user happy with every single selection/choice on the site, so I have to make decisions for the majority.

The real hurdle here is people strongly dislike change, even when the change is for the better. So I need to select users that basically have an open mind, and allow me to do all the heavy lifting on getting the new site ready and while providing me with feedback that I can use during the way.

Speaking of "Bob" @bobwest is a good choice, tech savvy and very thorough.

@Big Mike

Would is be possible to have a script that autocompletes a mention based on usernames?

Say I start to type @Big and it list all the users with that name for me to complete the mention. Would be a great way to ensure mentions aren't misspelled.

I volunteer to be a beta tester...I won't complain about the changes, I promise.
