Hi Mike,

auto-subscription default setting seems to not be working.
I have it set to "no email notification" yet all new subscriptions come in as "instant".



versus





same for when I post in a thread I am not subscribed to.

Thanks for reporting. I've put on my list to correct. I believe this is happening only when you click Follow from top of a thread. For replies to thread, it should be following your subscription default in UserCP. Can you please re-confirm?

I am adding this text to the bottom of Newsletter emails:

DO NOT FORWARD THIS EMAIL - IT CONTAINS PERSONALIZED LINKS

We use your email address as a method of account authentication, and links contained within this email are personalized for your account. Personalized links will automatically log you into your account within 72 hours of the email being sent. If you forward this email to anyone, they will be able to login as you during that time.

I want to explain in further detail here.

When a newsletter email is sent (emails that originate from [email protected]), the links within the email are keyed and personalized specifically for your account. This means that when you click one of the links, we authenticate you and you do not need to login to the site.

To be clear, below applies only to Newsletters. It does not apply to DM emails, thread subscription emails, etc. Only event newsletters.

This has dramatically improved the user experience of our site. Most members have multiple devices (laptop, tablet, phone, work computer) and having to login to each one can be a pain. But even worse, many members accidentally create more than one user account. This creates a lot of confusion, especially when one account is Elite and one is not.

This also creates an enormous amount of additional work for me, when they contact us asking for help to resolve the problem.

Implementing the auto-login feature has eliminated that entirely.

The email authentication only works for 72 hours from the time the email was sent out. If you click a link within that period, the system will log you in. If you click a link after that period, the system will not log you in. If you are already logged in, the system will not auto-login a second time. Even though you click a link after 72 hours, you may still be logged in to the site regardless -- by default -- because we store a cookie on your computer to keep you logged in. However, if you try to access the site on a different device -- with no cookie -- and it is after 72 hours, you will not be automatically logged in.

In the event you are auto-logged in, you will also be shown a login confirmation as the page loads, letting you know you have been logged in.

Long story short, if you do decide to forward an email, do so knowing that you should trust the recipient to be responsible. Or wait until 72 hours have elapsed before forwarding.
