New feature enhancement on the site tonight.

Now when uploading image attachments to the site, and then inserting the image into the body of a post using the IMG tag, you will no longer see the (duplicate) thumbnail of the image below the post in the attachment area of the post itself.

Old way:
1) Upload image to futures.io (formerly BMT) server.
2) Insert into body of post using IMG tag and the URL of the attachment.
3) IMG showed up in body of post.
4) IMG thumbnail also showed up below post in attachment area.

New way:
1) Upload image to futures.io (formerly BMT) server.
2) Insert into body of post using IMG tag and the URL of the attachment.
3) IMG shows up in body of post.

Please report any problems.

Thx,
Mike

i just tried to copy the url of the attachment after i uploaded and inserted it with the img tags and it still showed in two spots?

dont believe anything you hear and only half of what you see

I looked at your thread. There are no duplicates (img in post body and in attachment section).

Perhaps you are misunderstanding --- if you use just attach, and no img tag, then they go in attachment section. If you use img tag, then they go in post body wherever you place the img tag -- and now will no longer appear in attachment section (the new feature).

You'll need to show me a post that is wrong if you think there is a bug with it.

Thx.

New feature: Filter subforums listed in New Post results.

When clicking the "New Posts" button from the navbar, you will see a new button option on the top right side of the list of new posts:

Click that button, and it will take you to your UserCP options panel, where you can select which subforums to exclude from the listing of new posts.

Place a checkmark next to any subforum that you want to be EXCLUDED from the new posts result list, and hit Save at the bottom of the page.

Please report any problems.

I'm surprised I haven't heard from more of you guys on this feature. It seems like a lot of you would be real excited to be able to filter out subforums you don't want to show up in the list.

I've renamed the chatbox "channels" or "rooms" to make them more generic. Now if you and a group of buddies want to chat away from others, you can just go to a different room.

If you don't see the new images, you'll need to do a hard refresh on the page (Ctrl-F5).

The banner ad near the top of the site has been moved all the way to the very top, saving a good amount of screen pixel height.

Because of the slightly new layout, a couple of other changes were needed, listed below:

The unread post count ### has been removed from showing in the header, saving an enormous amount of queries to our database --- this is an extremely intensive lookup query, because it is unique to every single user and requires scanning a lot of tables.

You will now find the unread post count ### only after clicking "New Posts" from the navbar. It will show the unread count near the top left of the page.

The "clear" or "Mark forums read" button has moved to the bottom right of the "New Posts" result page.

Please report any problems.

I made one last adjustment, but I've made the site as narrow as I can. Please understand majority of people are viewing with much larger screens and on top of that, not using a Zoom setting which really wreaks havoc.

The minimum site width is 1130px with ads enabled, and 1085px with ads disabled (Elite only).

I appreciate your effort to alleviate this problem...just doesn't work for me. Maybe I'll try another browser or something....very disappointed

Edit: tried firefox...sucks, don't want to use that google thing so I guess it was nice while it lasted.

In IE (IE 9 at least, I don't have IE8) you can go to Zoom - Custom and enter a custom level. Does 120% work (vs 125%)? Maybe 124% works, etc. Otherwise you can use that tool I posted, I think the idea is don't make images bigger - only text. That is the main problem here, the zoom feature is making images bigger not just text, which causes all kinds of problems.

I tested the site using 1200px wide and it works fine with 125% zoom in IE9 on all posts, including posts with embedded images. The only issue was on pages where someone quotes another persons post, which has embedded images.

So if you are still seeing a problem, then that doesn't make sense to me. 1200px wide, yes? Or was it 1024px wide? If 1024px wide, I don't see how it was ever working.

Yep 1280 x 1024...on main page there was a scroll bar but if I went into a thread there would be no scroll bar. I could live with the way it was but now I would have to scroll to read the posts in threads. I tried a few other things but am still not happy....
This stinks...like I said this is the ONLY site I have this issue with. Frankly it's so annoying I don't want to deal with it. I guess I'll go play in a different sandbox.

It should be fine on 1280px wide. All I can say is it works fine on my system, IE9, 125% zoom at 1280px wide when there is not a post where a user has quoted another embedded image. So if you are certain that you are testing on a page where a quoted embedded image does not exist in the thread, then there is something else different on your end that works fine on a regular plain IE9 install.

I don't have access to IE8. My IE9 is "out of the box", nothing added to it as I only use it for compatibility testing and not for my main browser.

It works fine on Chrome and Firefox as well. I tested on two different machines.

Your options:

a) try to troubleshoot the difference on why mine works, yours doesn't. Give me a specific thread URL to test against.
b) look at add-ons that don't enlarge images, but only text
c) try using firefox or chrome
d) don't use zoom
e) don't use 125% zoom, but instead 124%, 123%, 122%, 121%, 120% or something that works
f) buy a bigger monitor
g) confirm you are viewing full screen

Sorry I can't be of more help. I just checked Google Analytics again, ranked by visitor traffic, by my calculations less than 2% of people viewing the site don't have the capability to display a resolution big enough to avoid a scrollbar. And those may be from mobile devices, not the primary user desktop. So I have to do what works best for the majority.

Here is a screenshot that shows even with the 'user poll', 125% zoom works at 1200px wide with no scrollbar.

The image is 1200px wide - no scrollbar.

Again, this is with 125% zoom. It will work with much less at normal zoom level.

Showing 125% zoom:

Dimensions are 1200px wide.

Today the Twitter "follow", Facebook "like", and Google "+1" buttons have all been moved to asynchronous loading instead of synchronous. Took me long enough, but finally got it done.

This means that if one of them is slow to load (Twitter slow, Facebook slow, Google slow) then it won't slow down the loading of futures.io (formerly BMT) pages.

Standard vBulletin terminology is Mark Forums Read. In reality, you can call it Mark Posts Read, it makes zero difference - they are both conveying the same information and the same end result. So I will leave it as-is.

A couple of enhancements to the thread info section at the top of every thread.

1) There is now an easy "Follow Thread" button next to the name of the thread. A lot of people aren't aware it is possible to easily follow new replies (by email) to their favorite threads. This will hopefully draw attention to it.

2) Added a section to list the number of file attachments in the thread. This info was already present to the right of the page navigation section, but apparently a lot of people miss it. This should make it more visible.

The "replies" and "attachment" numbers are links, it means you can click them to bring up more info.

BTW, I've already requested one change with the developer on the relative time mod. When viewing posts in the postbit, I want the precise time listed for anything older than "hours ago" (like it used to be). So relative time will stay for anything newer than "hours ago" and the old fixed time format will return for the rest.

May take a day or so to get this modified.

Related information about how much memory these facebook and google+ buttons consumes -

Quoting

Wallflower: Un-Socializing Your Web dietrich.blog

I was looking at about:memory and noticed entries for Facebook and Google+ URLs, even though I didn’t have either open. I figured they were probably from the social buttonry that decorates the web these days. No big deal… except they were taking up a bunch of memory! The Facebook button was using over 20mb and the Google+ button was taking over 40mb!

I have never clicked either of these buttons.
So I wrote Wallflower, a simple Firefox add-on (restartless of course) that removes these buttons from any page your browse to, saving your precious memory, CPU and battery life for the content you actually want.

Today added a new 'embed' button when attaching images to posts.

When you click the 'embed' button, it will put the [img]path-to-url[/img] automatically into the post window for you where your mouse cursor is.

If you want to embed multiple images into the post, remember to click your mouse to a new location in the post body window before clicking 'embed' again and again.

I am still working out a couple of bugs, but please go ahead and report problems.

Also yesterday or day before you may have noticed that now when you embed an IMG into the body of a post, it will no longer show the thumbnail below the post (duplicate).

I've also made it so that the ATTACH bbcode keyword functions the same as the IMG bbcode and is no longer a smaller size.

Just noticed this doesn't work in IE9 (last thing I test...). I'll see what can be done. Always something broken when it comes to IE.

is there a way to print an entire thread easily including attachments? I've printed my thread and it was somewhat easy but there were no attachments. Some were screen casts so those are hosted elsewhere I realize and probably not printable.

Embed buttons added as per above.

Also I made some minor cosmetic changes to download section.

Made changes to how Quotes are displayed in posts. A bit cleaner this way, but the change is minor. There is currently a bug affecting some posts, I am waiting for developer to address (probably tomorrow), but go ahead and report any problems as usual.

Thx,

This is a work in progress. There are still some bugs, formatting /css styling issues, and etc -- but go ahead and please give feedback while I continue to work out the bugs.

On the home page next to chatbox, a new "Recent posts" system has been added. This is completely re-written from scratch. It looks like the old one, but is completely different in order to add caching capabilities to make it faster, and to add in the in-line preview feature.

When you move your mouse over posts, it will pop-up and show you a short preview of that post before you click on it.

OK... oops!

Well, I don't know why, but that mod totally killed the site. So I've disabled it for now. I should check my email more often, cuz I had dozens of people telling me the site was down... (was working fine for me).

I've contacted the developer, will put it back as soon as I can.

For now, the site should be back.

I only had a minute before it killed the site, but it looked very good! (and apparently works better than any DOS attack).

The only thing I really missed was the scroll bar (or the larger number of posts).

There is a scroll bar, and this shows at least double the number of posts that the old version it replaces did. So.... you might have seen it while I was trying to fix some CSS errors.

But for now, it is disabled because it was causing permission errors in other parts of the site where it shouldn't. Waiting for developer to fix. Can't put the old one back because I am too far invested into the new one to undo all those changes. It might be a couple days due to holidays, but hopefully not.

No, I didn't see the scrollbar, maybe because I was browsing with my Ipad? I'm very glad to hear that it will show so many posts! But I've seen the permission errors...thought you kicked me off the site

In our last poll, I asked if futures.io (formerly BMT) should stop re-posting ZeroHedge news articles. The (slim) majority said yes. Plus the fact is, I have been deleting a large number of these articles before most of you guys even see them because they are just too over the top or distasteful, or are just full of ads for third party services I would never allow on futures.io (formerly BMT) myself.

So, I've decided to disable the reposting of ZeroHedge articles. The CNBC bot will stay.

If you guys see good ZH news stories, you should feel free to post them yourself manually.

Some wording in the New User "welcome" email has been changed. I'm posting the whole thing below.

Quoting

Hello <username>,

Welcome to the Big Mike Trading forum!

The secret to success with trading is within you, and we can help you find it.

We are different than other forums you may have visited, so take notice. Our community works extremely hard to keep everything moving forward in a positive way. We firmly believe there is no need for rude behavior in order to accomplish our goals of helping traders be successful.

We also firmly believe in sharing. There is no secret sauce here. If you want to be a good trader, you have to do the time and gain the experience. We can help, and the first lesson is simple -- there are no shortcuts, no holy grails, no magic indicators or systems that will ever make you profitable. Only you can make you profitable.

Are you here only for the downloads and indicators? If so, you are doing yourself a great disservice. The best way to improve your trading is by interacting with the community of traders in the forum itself. Chasing after holy grail indicators will just slow down your journey of accepting complete responsibility for your own actions and trading, instead of using indicators as scapegoats when something goes wrong. Eye candy is great, cool new toys are fun (indicators), but at the end of the day you need to decide -- are you here to make pretty charts, or are you here to make money?

I have deleted the $25 / 3-month option of Elite Membership. It was not widely used, and I think it just cheapens the community to have this option. It is gone now. There is just one option now: $50 for lifetime access.

If I upload an indicator, and then choose the "pencil" to make changes, it display the following keywords:

However, if I then click on "submit" to save the edited changes, the keywords look like (i.e. keywords are gone):

Am I doing something wrong?

It is a bug when editing an upload. When you first upload it, type in the tags and hit submit (the tags will be in the keyword input box, which in your screen shot is blank).

I've undone all the changes, and put the old recent posts notification back for now -- due to holiday, developer has not fixed new version yet.

Mike

The developer has gone MIA. I will have to find yet another developer to resume this and about a dozen other projects. There is a huge shortage of quality vbulletin developers out there.

Yup. At least it isn't like the other developer I hired right off the forum who has flat out stolen my money for the screenshot project. I have his dad's address, so I guess I will see if his father cares his son steals from people and then just sue him in small claims court.

You wouldn't imagine how many developers I've gone through, where they agree to projects then just go MIA before completion.

Couple changes to the home page today. Moved the poll to top, which expanded the Top 20 stats room.

The entire 'Traders Edge' section was supposed to be redone by now, but will be further delayed until I can re-re-re-re-hire a new developer.

futures.io (formerly BMT) will be upgrading to a new server soon, so I decided to add back this old favorite.

It adds a lot of database queries, but I missed it. So it is back.

not 100% sure if i can post a feature request here but i will.. i think it would be cool for a mod to allow people to put paypal donate buttons under their names for say people who offer up lots of help or recode indies for people all the time, etc... i follow another forum for gadget-hacking-nerd-stuffs and saw the idea. im pretty sure they are using IPB tho but i bet it could be added here pretty easily..

btw IPB is awesome! i might have mentioned that before..

Tapatalk has been updated to the newest release.

I would like to say this release fixes the connection bugs, but it is not mentioned anywhere in the changelog.

I have added instant Video Playing capabilities to the site.

You can attach mp4 or flv files to your post, and then there will be a new "Play Video" link next to them for instant on-line playing.

Please note, avi, wmv, mov, and swf files are not supported. Maybe at some point in the future, but not right now.

I've attached two files to this post to demonstrate.

Keep the attachments trading related.

Please report any problems.

Improvement to the built-in charts you can easily embed into your post.

The bbcode "chart" will plot a chart that is always up-to-date. So if you post it today, April 15th, and you view that post two months later, it will show the up-to-date chart.

The bbcode "charts" (with the s at the end, for 'static') will plot a chart that is static or fixed in time at the moment you posted. So if you post April 15th, and view that post two months later, the chart will be two months old.

Examples:

[chart]aapl[/chart]

This will produce an always up-to-date chart of AAPL, like so:

[charts]aapl[/charts]

This will produce a static fixed-in-time chart of AAPL as of this post date, like so:

You can also chart futures and currencies.

Mike

Fixed a bug just now, it should now be working properly.

would it be a burden to add mbt pro to platforms and indicators, i was wondering if anyone uses the creation of formula studies and some of the other things that are available, if we can get some feedback i can pass it on and maybe we can add some things that will make it better..., i like this platform and it's based on a call for customers ideas and feedback and they added all of the things everyone asked for...

i realize there may not be many users here but perhaps if it exists they will come...

i am going to see if i can get anywhere with some formulas etc.. though my skills are very limited ...

just a thought

thanks mike no biggie

If you will create a lot of contest for this area, then yes I will do it. But I want to avoid having a bunch of subforums with little to no content.

i was wondering if there is enough interest from users of mb trading 's platform to warrant an added section, but not sure if anyone even uses it besides me, so i was curious

It seems as though even through their forums the majority seems to reside as currency traders and use meta trader

thx for the explanation.

personally i only use whatever available here at bmt and each selected instrument appears to be adequately profitable by its own right, for me any way.

it seems mike already appears to be ok with your idea. so why not give your idea a chance to mushroom perhaps into something significant. best of luck.

I've made changes to all our webinars so that they are now hosted directly on our servers instead of the Amazon CDN. I am running Wowza to do this, and I made the change because of occasional problems out of my control with Amazon (low bandwidth situations).

Please report any problems with the webinars. If you had any problems in the last few hours -- ignore, this was during the transition phase.

BTW, if you are one of the users who previously encountered playback problems (buffering, erratic pause/play problems) then I am eager to hear from you as to whether it is improved now.

File attachment size for 7z, rar, and zip attachments has been increased from 256MB per attachment to 1G per attachment. I noticed a couple users bumping into the old limit, so why not increase it?

Hi,

I have made a global change to all user profiles. The change is to the default Message Editor, which will effect the way the editor functions when you write new posts on the site.

I have changed everyone's default to "Standard Editor". This solves a lot of problems users were often complaining about (embedded images not working, YouTube links broken on edits, etc). This change also solves a lot of formatting issues that happen when users cut and paste text into the editor box in certain browsers.

If you want to revert back to the old editor, go to UserCP from the top nav bar, then click Edit Options on the left, then scroll down and change the Message Editor Interface to "Enhanced Interface - WYSIWYG" and submit. BTW, WYSIWYG stands for "what you see is what you get". I recommend you do NOT go back to the old editor, but instead use the standard editor.

Below are screenshots on how to revert back, in case you want to:

I am contemplating disabling "Visitor Messages" for all users.

Visitor Messages are often confused for Private Messages. The difference is one is publicly visible to everyone, and one is private.

When you click on someone's user profile, the first 'tab' in their profile that displays is their Visitor Message profile (assuming they have it enabled, which most do). You can then write messages here. This is kind of like Facebook's "wall".

What I find is that 99% of people don't realize the message is public. Their intention was to write a private message, not a public one.

Let me know if you have an opinion on this.
