If anyone has a suggestion on a better visual icon to represent 'thread starter' or 'original poster' than the microphone, let me know. Open to suggestions.

I'm also still working on the other suggestions.

Mike

Rather than 'starter' or 'op' or 'original poster,' think 'first' or '#1' instead. Icons for 'first' or '#1' work better, imo.

A google image search for either will show what I'm referring to, but a 'first place ribbon icon' comes to mind.

OK, but let's use a journal as an example where other members ask questions, but the primary poster is the thread starter.

Does it make sense to see "#1" next to his posts as the owner of the thread?

Doesn't that question also apply to the 'mic' icon?

My understanding is that they both represent 'thread starter.'

Or am I missing something?

But to answer your question, it makes sense to me ... since he started the thread.

The original issue was that the mic icon does not intuitively cause a reader to think, "Ah! s/he must be the thread starter." IMO, that intuitive response would be more like if the icon were one of a first place ribbon, or something along those lines:

Again, let me know if I'm misunderstanding something.

(BTW, my other choice was an icon of an arm/hand shooting a starter's gun)

From the "improve" thread:

Big Mike View Post
Enhance "Follow" thread button (at top of thread) so it respects default value of Subscription type for member (instant, daily, weekly). Currently it is forced to Instant only. They can be modified by user after the fact, but it should default to whatever the member has as his default. It isn't an easy enhancement which is why it wasn't done the first time...

Mike

This is now done. Please report any problems, and it would be great if you could also report that it is working correctly for you.

Basically, it should follow your existing subscription preferences now. If you had no subscription, no email, daily, weekly etc, it should respect that.

My problem is that I can't think of a picture that unambiguously conveys the idea of "Thread Starter." This may not be a case of a picture being worth a thousand words.

If an icon is not already in wide use, I think it usually is not all that understandable. Think of all the computer system icons that are familiar and second-nature to us. Except for a very few, they probably meant very little until we got used to them (Exceptions: hourglass or the current twirling circle for "wait".) If there is no standardized icon for something, it gets tough to think of one, which means that probably users would find it hard to recognize if they saw it.

Agree. OTOH, using an icon that is already used by Google, phone apps, and others to mean 'record,' as something other than that, is the other side of the coin.

But there's hope. The 'gear' icon is now well-known to mean 'settings.' That was learned, and not really intuitive. Same with the '3 lines,' or 'hamburger' icon ('menu'). Mike will just have to start a 'thread starter' icon trend.

This has been implemented:

In addition, you will receive an automatic direct message letting you know this action has been taken.

All of this is triggered upon viewing your own journal. I worked to implement this today to make it a better experience for our February Journal Challenge, located here:

Please report any problems.

This site for some reason truncates urls if you just paste the url into the text box rather than use the "insert link" button if they have a # in them. All of SierraChart docs links for the ACSIL functions and methods have urls with this # in them so its has been hard to point users to the function you are trying to direct them to until I just noticed that the button doesn't shorten the link!

for example,

2021-01-30 14_19_24-ACSIL Interface Members - Functions - Sierra Chart

The above url gets posted here if I use the insert link button as,

https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=doc/ACSIL_Members_Functions.html

but like this if pasted directly into the text,
https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=doc/ACSIL_Members_Functions.html

Which is strange?!

The journal challenge is a recurring event here, and I am proud of it - because of how much it can help traders!

I've now completed the feature that will allow real-time updates for the journal challenge:

As you browse our community threads, you'll see this real-time list updating. Follow along in the journal threads and make your voice heard by voting for your favorites -- using the thanks button -- so that journal authors can win!

You should also start your own journal, for your own chance to win!

Are you saying the below URL doesn't work?

@Trembling Hand

So what you can do as a workaround for the moment is the following:

[url="https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=doc/ACSIL_Members_Functions.html#scAlertWithMessage"]my url with fragment[/url]

When you mark it up this way, it maintains the URL fragment in the href.

YouTube URL's will now automatically be converted to YouTube player, without needing any bbcode markup. Simply post the URL and nothing more.

Existing posts are being converted now in the background, it will take a few hours. New posts should reflect the change immediately.

Please report any problems.

Mike, a question, but depending on the answer it may lead to a suggestion:

Suppose I tag someone with the "@" sign, and it's the wrong person. But it's a valid user so the system finds a match and sends out a DM.

Then I realize the mistake and go back to my post and edit it to put in the user I really meant, and the system finds a match on it.

Does the edit trigger a new DM to the corrected user, or is that only done when I did the original post?

If it doesn't send a new DM, do you think it should, and is it worth whatever effort it would take to change it, if so?

(I just did exactly this mistake/correction, and I wondered if the newly-corrected user would be notified of the mention.)

Bob.

Made a change to prevent new post subscription emails for going out for the "Introduce yourself" thread.

The reasoning being that each new post triggers thousands of emails, and it can be overwhelming -- especially for new members.

I have a suspicion that we actually lose a lot of good potential members here because they end up getting "spammed" with introduce yourself emails, and perhaps they hit the Unsubscribe button and accept the links -- which is to remove all emails of any kind going forward (so they never hear from us again).

Another possibility is that they simply mark the whole range of "introduce yourself" emails as spam in their email software, which automatically triggers an unsubscription on our side from all emails as well.

If any of you are subscribed and currently receiving emails to that thread, would you please kindly tell me whether or not you have stopped getting them as of now (going forward from this post).

The edit will in fact trigger a mention for the new (corrected) user, which will trigger an email to them if they have not disabled it.

Updates to the editor toolbar, to drastically reduce the number of confusing icons.

With the updates I've been making to the site, these buttons simply aren't necessary any longer. The system should automatically figure out what you are wanting to do.

Spent the morning optimizing some thread caching routines. Found a couple of areas for huge improvements, like 100x over increase after I applied some techniques I've learned to old routines.

End result, thread display should be significantly faster. I've noticed most threads are loading 40-50% faster, for example in 90ms vs 140ms.

Speaking of milliseconds, I've modified the footer of the site to display page load time in milliseconds instead of seconds.

LOL, all of my spare time this week has been devoted to learning some new Cryptocurrencies. The things these new tokens are coming up with in DeFi and the blockchain are just amazing. Far more interesting than Silver.

How did you do this morning trading it?

How confident can you be on some of these new DeFi opportunities without personally auditing the code? That's what really scares me about DeFi and has kept me away.

The day was good. Silver spreads don't trade enough so difficult to make it a really good day, So lots of odd lots when in NG or CL it would have been 100s of spreads. Can't complain though. HK had a 50c range, KN a 30c range, NU 17c range and UZ a 20c range. Pretty crazy for a commodity that has a hard storage cap on spread values!

Cleaning up another item:

You still zoom the image like normal, but this outdated "warning" is no longer useful and it has been removed.

If you are still seeing it, you'll have to wait for your javascript css cache to expire (up-to 7 days), or you can force it right now by doing a Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + (reload icon) in your browser.

@Trembling Hand

So what you can do as a workaround for the moment is the following:

[url="https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=doc/ACSIL_Members_Functions.html#scAlertWithMessage"]my url with fragment[/url]

When you mark it up this way, it maintains the URL fragment in the href.

Mike

Ok so just testing now that the url button has been removed.

If anyone has a suggestion on a better visual icon to represent 'thread starter' or 'original poster' than the microphone, let me know. Open to suggestions.

I'm also still working on the other suggestions.

Mike

On the Thread Starter question, currently this only shows if the person starting the thread is an Elite member. Non-Elite members may start a thread, but they are not designated that way.

I was reading a trade journal this morning, and I couldn't remember if someone who made the post I was reading was the person whose journal it was. I had to go back to the first page to check that.

There may be reasons to not have the other icons for non-Elite users, but I think that marking the "Thread Starter," whether Elite of not, would add clarity and would be useful.

Mike

I noticed this morning that my change is only working for instant thread subscriptions. Members that have daily or weekly subscriptions are still receiving updates for the Introduce yourself thread.

Made a change, will monitor.

Small backend change for cached images. Previously pointed to bmcharts.com domain, now pointing to futures.io.

If you see any problems with images in posts not showing correctly, please let me know. This is the feature that takes images from non-FIO domains and grabs them, stores them on our server, so that they are cached. This not only makes the images load faster in the future, but most importantly it ensures the images are always visible should they be unavailable or deleted in the future from the original source.

Should the followers of a thread be visible? (list their names)

Would this be useful? For thread starters especially, but visible to everyone (once clicked)?

I can't see why it would. But I also can't see any big negative in it either. I don't expect it would get much use, off the top of my head. Perhaps some thread starters might care, but probably not the average reader.... Just my initial reaction.

Updates to the editor toolbar, to drastically reduce the number of confusing icons.

With the updates I've been making to the site, these buttons simply aren't necessary any longer. The system should automatically figure out what you are wanting to do.

@Big Mike

Any chance of bringing back the hyperlink button? While the the system does recognize that I am entering a hyperlink it does not format it to allow for the friendly link. We are left with the big ugly link vs something which is something more descriptive and useful.

SPRE Info
vs
https://smallexchange.com/products/spre

The display formatting between the two is completely different. So there is little chance of remembering how to format it without going to look it up.

I think I agree with this. I was thinking that I would just remember the proper syntax for the link that substitutes a text string for the normal url, as Robert illustrated, but the fact is that I would not. I also, frankly, don't want to learn it if I can just have a tool to do it with.

So my vote is also to bring it back, or otherwise provide the functionality.

I say this light-heartedly:

Reading the recent posts made me recall having political discussions at work many years ago.

I recall thinking, "People should research why certain governmental programs were started in the first place, before simply just calling for their removal."

Hi everyone,

I want to welcome @Rrrracer to the FIO team today, as Webinar Host. I asked Shane to come aboard and help our community by taking over as much responsibility with the webinars as possible, freeing up my time to focus on development of the site in other areas.

Terry @tturner86 is transitioning to his new Marketing Strategist role, where he is also going to focus on all things Marketing in order to take as much responsibility as possible off of me in this area, so I can again focus on development of the site in other areas.

I am excited about these new changes. It is my strong belief that this will help catapult us forward to new excited times

Today's webinar with the CME Group about Ethereum futures will be Terry's last as Webinar Host. Shane will start beginning next week! Please give him some time to ramp up, it's a lot of work!

Not sure if this is me/my browser, or something to do with the way the email is formatted but this is what I am getting.

Big Mike View Post
@SMCJB thank you. Took a look, it happens when the first few lines of the post include a quoted reference to another FIO thread. The logo image embedded is a big vector image, which resizes properly when viewed in a web browser because the browsers respect the CSS class definitions.

However, email service providers are not loading external CSS files and therefore are discarding the important class information for that image, which includes the max height/width attribute.

I've modified the inline CSS for the notify template to include it, so external loading is not required. I'm going to try and trigger the same "error" again by writing the same post again, and let's see if it is resolved.

Mike

Just FYI, this is still happening. Not sure if you thought it was fixed.

Discovered an issue with my script logic for the webinar popups.

In the event that you registered for the event via email, prior to visiting the website, you could potentially see the popup even though you just registered for the event via email.

I modified the logic so this should no longer happen. Will need further testing to confirm, please share your feedback.

The webinar events popup should only appear:

- 48 hours or less prior to event
- You haven't previously registered

And a side note, yes I am working to make the popup less obtrusive. I am currently working on new functions that I am building to handle event popups site-wide including new @ mentions, new direct messages, and webinar events.

EDIT: damn, moments later I had to disable it. We exceeded our API request limit with Google, I need to do some caching.

Change made for outbound emails that contain quoted content, thanks to @kevinkdog. I've been trying to get outbound emails to not contain quoted content, because it messes up formatting most of the time. It should contain only the post reply itself.

Hopefully with the most recent change, this behavior is working. The last change I made was a few days ago.

Let me know, look at the thread subscription emails.

What your really looking for is probably OTA/Order Ticker Algo's
but I'm not sure if they work without ADL. A hidden cost with TT can be MAP fees. In the fine print at the bottom...

There is no end line/return/whatever you want to call it after the "Algo's"/URL link. The /URL tag appears to be adding an end line/return/whatever you want to call it character.

This is more of a question since its possible that this functionality is already there somewhere, but is it possible for user viewing FIO to have some kind of timer (displayed on home page/main site page) to upcoming webinar set in accordance with their local time?

//I have no idea how forum programing works, or how difficult this could be, so please forgive if this requires lot more than what I'm thinking with my silly brain atm.

Thank you and regards ^^

Absolutely. This is coming very soon. I already have it working for admins:

It counts down in real-time, and is based on your local time of course.

Here is the raw text in the editor:

The issue is you have a newline embedded inside the URL bbcode. I will edit to remove now, let me know if this is what you are referring to?

Today was @Rrrracer's very first webinar as Webinar Host, and Shane did a great job!

That also means that today marked @tturner86's last webinar as Webinar Host, and I wanted to thank Terry for his time & great work over the last 5 or so years he has been Webinar Host! Terry is not leaving FIO, he is just transitioning into a Marketing Specialist role where he will be helping to expose our community to new people!

Small update to the automatic journal setting feature, that sets your journal in your profile field automatically. It will now also consider the last post date/time if you have multiple journals, before updating your profile field.

Thanks to @Rrrracer for pointing this out.

Hey guys,

Now you can post any image link, and the system will automatically embed the image for you. No need to wrap it in bbcode (IMG), or download it and re-upload here, etc. No need to even link it.

Today is first day with this feature enabled, so I am needing feedback. Please take a look at your threads and journals for any strange behavior. If something has changed (for the worse) please report it (use Report button, or link the permalink here). That way I can take a look at your exact example.

I purged the cache when this change was made. So page loading times may be slightly slower while the cache rebuilds for the next day or so.

Hi Mike,

I just edited the title of a thread to fix a spelling error, and it took the change OK, except the original spelling is still shown in the heading at the top of the page. Everywhere else, it is fine.

Explained in this post:

Found a bug thanks to @the edge whereby if you had undelieverable email, received the notice from our system, and updated your email address to a different email prior to resetting/clearing the notice by following the link, you would not be able to clear the link at all.

Corrected!

So are you saying that the "D3spotter" private message doesn't get marked as read?

You click on it, and then what happens?

Can you please click on it and then copy/paste the URL for that message? It will give me the exact message ID so I can examine it in the database.

Try this please:
- On the right side, click the checkbox for that message
- Scroll all the way down to bottom and select 'Mark as read'
- Click go

Let me know please. Still, it's an odd thing to be sure.

A tweak to the expanded links feature -- previously, when you wrapped the URL bbcode in a description, example:

[url="https://ninjatrader.com/download"]Download NinjaTrader![/url]

Then the expanded links feature would ignore the URL entirely. Which is the desired effect, most of the time. But there are a lot of user errors due to not completely understanding how bbcode works.

Example errors:

[url="https://ninjatrader.com/download"]https://ninjatrader.com/download[/url]

[url="https://futures.io/feedback-announcements/2497-futures-io-site-changelog-issues-problem-reporting-post835441.html#post835441"]https://futures.io/feedback-announcements/2497-futures-io-site-changelog-issues-problem-reporting-post835441.html#post835441[/url]

In these two examples above, the wrapped text is just a link itself -- not a description. What would happen prior to today is that only the text would be displayed. So if it was a YouTube link, a Tweet, a FIO link, then none of our enhanced link features would work.

But after the change today, we are now scanning the text and if it begins with http, then we assume it's a link and will treat it as such -- instead of treating it as text.

That means that this:

[url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK8dDwUZaxs&t=1s]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK8dDwUZaxs&t=1s[/url]

Becomes this:

And this:

[url="https://twitter.com/futuresio/status/1360349280666611716"]https://twitter.com/futuresio/status/1360349280666611716[/url]

Becomes this:

Please report any problems.

Hey guys,

A bug fix to report. For a long time (years?) the top-right search box has not always functioned 100% of the time, sometimes you would try to click it and it would never popup.

I hope this is now fixed! But I need you to please test & confirm, and also please report any new issues.

Hi guys,

The photo albums feature is going away on March 1 2021. Please download any photos from your album(s) that you wish to save.

We are notifying every member that has a photo album, and asking they download those photos they wish to keep. Alternatively, you may also wish to upload them to your journal thread if you wish for them to be permanently available and viewable.

AFTER DOWNLOADING ANY PHOTOS YOU WISH TO KEEP:

Instructions on how to delete your albums from futures io:

Step 1: Click "Edit Album"

Step 2: Click the checkmark
Step 3: Click "Delete"

That's it. The album is now deleted. After all of your albums have been removed, you will stop receiving the warning notice.

Note: Simply marking the album as "private" will not work. You must delete the album in order to stop receiving the warning notice.

After March 1 2021, all album photos will be removed from our system permanently.

Only 183 members have ever used the albums feature, and most of that was 10 years ago. This is why the feature is going away. Instead, we want to eliminate confusion on where members should be storing their photos. We want photos to be stored in users journals, only.

Mike

Hey guys,

As mentioned, the albums are now gone. They've been disabled/removed.

Please use the normal site tools for images.

Guys,

Is this working 100% for everyone? Please let me know.

Mike

Yep, it's working. Tried it numerous times, and the search window came up every time without any problems.

Does seem to work better now. I have experienced it work poorly before. Just clicked around with it many times. Works.

@Big Mike

Well done on fixing the search bar.

While you're at it, you may want to consider removing the word "Beta Test" from Threadloom Search: it's been a number of years and it is a good feature for the site.

Been trying to improve Google's understanding of our site for a long while (years). Just documenting where we stand right now, viewing from mobile:

Google presently understands that we have 'posts' and 'authors' of those posts. I am still having trouble with the Breadcrumbs, but I know why -- it just needs a huge redesign with vBulletin.

The issue is with the way it pops up when you click it, from a mobile device. Now that I've returned from the emergency trip for my wife (see my thread), I'll resume work on that.

A new community forum has been created for Tradovate:

https://futures.io/tradovate/

You can talk about the Tradovate platform, share custom studies/indicators, and receive help in that section.

There was a minor bit of broken HTML in the forum display pages (where each thread is listed under the main forums). It was causing one of the columns to not be shown correctly.

I've fixed it now, but if you notice any odd looking behavior on the forum display pages (where threads are listed), let me know.

An example forum display page:

Everyone,

We are updating our webinar system (finally!) and I need some help testing several things. This is a rough alpha, it's just the basic framework --- no visuals yet.

As many of you as possible, I need you to click this link:

Link #1:
https://futures.io/webinar-events.php?hash=6a4b6f1c878d7f363ed423ebb65b84bde50234b7

If you receive any error, please grab a screenshot and tell me. If you are reading this message after this weekend, then you can disregard.

I also need as many of you as possible to open an Incognito window, and click this link:

Please click this link more than once to test our duplicate registration system.

Link #2:
https://futures.io/webinar-events.php?hash=6a4b6f1c878d7f363ed423ebb65b84bde50234b7&source=presenter&code=1426

It should ask you to register. If not, please tell me. I also would like you to test logging in (in Incognito) and ensure it worked after logging in.

You should also receive emails confirming your registration, and then another email when the test webinar ends.

Thank you!

Mike

I noticed the first issue, the Android app is trying to process those links when it shouldn't.

I've emailed the dev team to correct.

Hi Mike, I am using MS Edge on my PC for the time being, and I see no issues with the webinar system links that you sent. I clicked link #2 several times and it told me hat I was already registered.

Thanks... have a great day.

Hi guys,

MORE HELP PLEASE -- IF YOU ALREADY CLICKED, PLEASE CLICK AGAIN!

We could really use your help for more testing of our new webinar registration system. We are about to switch to Zoom Webinars, with a lot more features than GoToWebinar, and we need help to test the registration system we built.

Please click this link:

futures.io/webinar-events.php?hash=e4fb582f2501a6a48e60f8c60909858e4111af6b

Please report any errors (give me a screenshot of the error, or the error code).

We want to launch this new system for Wednesday's huge webinar with Dr Brett & Morad (joint), so need to really test it thoroughly!

Thank you!
