Since it's creation on December 12th 2009, the "Market Wizards" usergroup was supposed to be a reward for the participation level of a particular user on the forum.
Only a small handful (currently 20) of users have this title. It was meant solely as a big way of saying "thanks".
Unfortunately, instead, it seems to not have had the desired effect. Some recipients of the Market Wizard title did not want the title at all, as they felt they did not earn it. Others (regular users) would see some users with the Market Wizard rank and question how or why they received such a rank (in other words, they didn't truly earn it or deserve it).
The Market Wizard rank was formulated based on forum activity and the number of helpful posts. For example, someone who makes 1000 posts but receives 0 thanks for those posts will never be a Market Wizard. The number of "thanks received" is a large factor in the formula.
I plan to make some adjustments to the formula. First, I am considering only allowing users who have been on the site for more than 1 year to have the title. I'm also considering further tweaking the formula to put more emphasis on the "Thanks received".
I would like to get your input on these changes, and also -- in particular -- I would like for you to make suggestions on what we should rename the Market Wizard rank to.
Well, what will I wear for Halloween this year if you change this??
I like the idea.
# of thanks is good to show who is helpful, who is not etc..
I wonder if it is possible in a way that we could rank people (all members) as to if we think a guy is a wizard or not?
That would go more in the beginner--->intermediate--->advanced--->Master category, but I think it isn't a bad idea, but could offend...
Like, what if you had a minimum 20 votes and we could vote on each member as to what level we thought they were.
0 jury is still out (less than 20 or 50 or whatever votes)
1 just starting out
2 on the path to more etc..
3 knows their business
4 kickin ass and taking names...
5 Trading GOD
I think that would get the more accelerated traders to add more value maybe? I don't know, maybe a terrible idea...
That would take a whole new module. For now I can only tweak based on stats available in your profile, like # of posts, join date, # thanks received, etc.
Also maybe just raising the requirements and starting everyone back over from scratch?
I guess the renaming is due to the implication that the 'Market Wizard' is a market expert..... so maybe just renaming the title to 'futures.io (formerly BMT) Aficionado' or 'futures.io (formerly BMT) Addict' or something would ease the situation? That's really what it is, I guess by the time you get to 'Market Wizard,' you've spent sooooo much time on the site that you probably do know where everything is.
Although usually on most forums with rank, you typically see the rank somehow correlated to the purpose of the forum, in this case trading.
I'm thinking the one year minimum is a good idea and you could probably bump up the "thanks" number a little....sounds fair enough.
One question though ...would current wizards be "grandfathered" or would we be stripped of our rank ?
I always liked the "Market Wizard" title because it seemed to tie in well. But like I said, I received a lot of flak over it. So in particular, I'm looking for some good suggestions for renaming it-- something "cooler" than "futures.io (formerly BMT) Addict"
There is no grandfathered in -- sorry, the calculations are performed once a week and everything is automatic. So you would simply qualify, or not, based on whatever the new conditions are.
Like you once said, "This is not a democracy it is your house", I am simply a guest and will accept any decision. Personally I don't think a color or a name will change what I really am, you know much more from a person by what and how she/he writes, I realize that for new members it is difficult to identify the true leaders of this board but that is part of the time to be spent to be part of the comunity. When I look to a profile I always give more emphasis to the thanks given rather thanks received, that is what I call the TRTG ratio, sometimes it is 1:10 and IMO It really changes the judgement of the person, but again that's me and I am just a guest....
I'm right there with you on that. I've got some ideas on how to bring more attention to those types of metrics, not just as a poster, but for example for specific threads as a whole, etc. Still working on it.
But when I see someone who is constantly posting and not sharing much of anything, and on top of that has not given any thanks, and has been a member for a long time, well I think that speaks volumes...
Given that there are only 20 people out of a few thousand, probably means the title isn't completely out of whack. That's a pretty minuscule percentage.
LOL if someone was complaining about me having that title, I already know who it was
