I don't understand the problem or what these threads could be disrupting. They're already in the off-topic section, so no one who is looking for trading discussion will go there. Who cares if some heated arguments take place? Isn't that precisely why there is an off-topic section, to keep these arguments from disrupting other areas? I have never once felt that whatever arguments take place there were disruptive to my experience here. In fact I almost never see such topics because I don't usually browse the off-topic section.

Also, don't you need some place to move off-topic discussions to when they start in other threads?

I also like a large number of the posts in off-topic. I created the section specifically so people could chat about non-trading stuff. I don't want to see them go.

But recently some topics have been real trouble makers. I could exercise "executive decision" and close such topics, but then it will be a fight over why I closed one and not the other, etc.

In the end, I don't want to see people get turned off from futures.io (formerly BMT) because off-topic conversations have gotten unruly and turned into heated arguments.

That is why I was just seeking input from members so I could see where people stand.

If you guys have advice on how I could restrict threads other than the "no politics or religion" let me know. The shameful thing is, some of the best off-topic threads in my opinion have been about politics. But some threads seem to have been created simply to cause a disruption. It is a fine line between encouraging a civil discussion or debate, and having it turn into a flame war when it is over a heated topic like politics.

So far it seems the majority want the off-topic section to stay. Myself included.

So I'll try to figure out a compromise so that off-topic stays, but these more heated discussion topics are not allowed.

the other thing you can try is sticky it to thread bottom then it will not be the first thing a first time visitor sees.

I come to futures.io (formerly BMT) for trading and have no problem with the Off Topic section.

No offense Mike but no site is complete with out a miscellaneous/off topic thread. Some of us like to share and discuss other things. What do you care about what's being discussed ther as long as it's not obscene or otherwise not generally palatable. Again no disrespect Mike but leave it as it is.

Edit: I apologize if I am coming across harshly it's just that I don't like excessive censorship generally speaking, and it sounds like you don't like some of the topics and want to put the kibosh on it because they are not in YOUR taste

HI Mike

I like the idea of an off topic area, but you are right, some threads will be started just to encourage a flame war. From what I saw over at Wilder's Security forum if you do continue it, you will need to exercise a strong hand.

I would let it be known you will moderate heavily, the moderation is not open to discussion, and not negotiable. Those that have a real problem with that might not be people you really want here anyway.

If it weren't for the Off Topic section, I would not have a remote controlled toilet. Imagine still having to lift up the seat... But thanks to @forrestang, I am now living the dream! Yeah, baby!

Seriously, my head would explode without the relief of the Off Topic section...

Thanks for everyone's input.

The off-topic section will remain as-is.
