I recommend that one must be an Elite Member to Upload as well as Download from this site. The free stuff currently available is enough to determine if one wants to become an Elite Member or not. To put my money where my mouth is, I just became an elite member a few minutes ago.

I have been a lurker for a few weeks now. I have enjoyed browsing the site and find it a worthwhile asset, even though eSignal is not favored by most members here. I was once a webmaster and java junky so coding ideas I find here, to look at them on signal charts, is not a problem for me.

I have been intraday trading full time for over 10 yrs and I do not belong to or subscribe to any other trading entities, except EWI and Socionomics.

I will trust Mike to make the correct decision about this issue.

Hi Mike,
I don't think you will know until you try it and see. I have been a member for about 2 years and this is the best website I have found if you are trying to learn about trading. Keep up the good work.

I fully agree with you Big Mike. The downloads should be made available to Elite members only.

I support restricting the content in some way. $50 lifetime is very cheap. I would favor giving extra weight to the opinions of people who have donated indicator code or who are heavy content contributors.

I am also new to the site just started in July 2011. Maybe this is a method to screenout the bots.

There is value to this site and I have learned alot in the short time but having blown up my account and just getting back into trading slowly. I really liked after downloading an indicator when it was changed or updated I got an email notification that was cool.

Elite membership is something I was considering anyway. I like the idea about the downloading to prevent the bots.

Just this email asking everyone's opinion proves it is a good site and whatever decision is made I can support it.

Thanks,
Louis

I was thinking, if a person publish his indicator in the public forum, it's public, accessible by everyone. He knows that his indicator is going to be used by all that download it. We must assume that he's not worried about that.
On the other hand, if that same indicator is published in a private forum, he is protecting (in a way) his indicator, accessible only to those that subscribe that forum.

We cannot prohibit a person to publish his indicators wherever he wants. People must understand that in the internet there are all kinds of people, and someone might use that indicator as if it was written by himself. He can even sell it, since it was found in a public forum. Naturally that this is wrong, and even against the law, but unfortunately this is the world where we live in, people have no sense of dignity.

I confess that I've mix feelings about this.

Hello Mike,
I think this is a good idea. Having not contributed with ideas or modifications to another´s ideas, I can't comment on the idea about the number of posts. I use this site most than anything, to learn about the markets and their behaviors. I think the idea of typing characters might help filtering bots and the like.
In this forum, even the free indicators are high quality and I would have paid an elite membership to have the right to use them. Most than anything though, it's the discussion that helps the learning here. Leaving them, as well as the screenshots freely visible, could increase the serious reader's tilt to join as an elite member.

Just my two cents.
NB: Just an additional word of thanks to you BM, and all great posters here (you know who you are!).

Mike,
I would support your thought on this, I don't see Downloads elsewhere, b'cause I am not looking around for Downloads. I don't trust too many sites other the BigMikes!

Perhaps time to reign in the behavior and make all who use site an Elite member, I would support you on this.

Another note...Since a good amount of indicators are for Ninja Trader, I would like you to contact NinjaTrader for a "Big Mikes" discount. The lifetime fee should be reduced, for all the new business you could bring to them.

Thanks for the great site!

currently, the life time membership is around 999 usd....

how about getting it reduced to 699 for bg members only....?

This is a great community on the web, and I appreciate Big Mike working hard to keep it that way. My experience with pay internet forums has always been very positive. Somehow, putting money up (even if a small amount) filters out all but the truly serious people. After seeing the quality posts and people at Big Mike's I signed up for Elite status right away - totally worth it.

Here are my votes:
  1. Yes. Make all downloads elite. $50 or so not asking too much. The amount of quality downloads on this site is amazing. If you collected the 100 best downloads at Big Mikes, packaged them up, and dropped them into a rags-to-riches snake-oil trading side, you could probably ask 100 times the cost of the Elite status here (I am not suggesting that would be a good idea!). To me, the low but not insignificant cost of the Elite status is important: ask for more, and you risk sounding too good to be true and shady. Ask for less, and people may not take you seriously. $5 is not enough, $500 is too much.
  2. But, make the journals elite, too! One of these days I will be starting a journal, but only if I can put it in an elite section. I don't want any yahoo reading or commenting on my hard work. Any member of Big Mike's? Definitely. Just not anyone on the web.
  3. If you truly want to decelerate growth, make everything Elite. This may turn away some serious, quality folks, though. Paying for something on the web like this without getting a preview feels shady - a lot the the too-numerous-to-count instant-riches trading "deals." Big Mike's is so *not* that. Personally, I would still make a substantial amount free (15-25%). Maybe the NinjaTrader specific sections (since they probably generate a lot of the initial traffic)?
Whatever you choose to do is great, Mike. This is your place. Thanks for the hospitality.

Big Mike View Post
All,

I am contemplating a major / drastic change to the behavior of all downloads on the site. The change would be to make all downloads Elite Only. I mean all downloads, in posts, threads, downloads section, everywhere globally. The only exclusion would be images (screen shots), but all other file types would be available only to Elite Members.

I have mixed feelings on this, so wanted to get some feedback from the users to consider as well before making any decisions. The main reason for the desire to change is to protect the work and to protect the value of the community.

Right now, too many "bots" are downloading our indicators and posting them on other sites as their own. Right now, too many real people register "fake" accounts because they can't even be bothered to spend 30 seconds to type in correct info when they register, all because all they want is to download something and likely never participate further in the site.

I previously tried enforcing a 10 post minimum for downloads, but all that did was have people create 10 junk posts. So that isn't going to work.

It seems the best way to protect the collection of downloads the users have worked very hard on, is to restrict access to only those who are serious about trading.

It certainly doesn't have to be Elite only, but the only other realistic option to implement is the minimum post requirement. If I change it to say 50 (instead of what we tried before, 10) then maybe it would prevent people from creating 50 spam posts just to download something, but still allow people who are serious about trading - but for whatever reason aren't Elite members - to still download. But the problem is, 50 posts is far, far more than what most people have (unfortunately), so such a requirement is likely to just piss off a lot of people.

The desire to change is not about increasing Elite sign ups. In fact, lately I have been wondering if futures.io (formerly BMT) is getting "too big" as we've started to attract some of the trolls from other sites and sometimes some of the posts are getting unfriendly lately. I am fighting this very hard as I am sure you are as well. We all want futures.io (formerly BMT) to remain a unique place, a place where everyone is truly here to help, and not start arguments, call each other names, or other troll like behavior. So this might mean making futures.io (formerly BMT) a more exclusive place where only serious traders are welcome.

Now obviously, just because someone pays for Elite membership does not automatically mean they are a serious trader. But they are probably far less likely to be a trouble maker while paying for the privilege to be here.

So a move of making all downloads Elite only might stunt our growth in terms of new user sign ups to the site, but that is fine with me if it means that what growth we have is of a higher quality and caliber user. I don't want to make the requirement solely based on post count, because there are far, far too many people who do not post much but are still working very hard to improve their trading. These people have signed up for Elite status to help support the site, and I think that entitles them to receive the downloads without a minimum post requirement.

Anyway, so there it is. Some of my many thoughts on the matter. Please share yours. I'm hoping to get a good mix of replies from both Elite Members and non-Elite Members.

Mike

a very good question.I have been on this site for almost a year, and imo, you should make it a elite requirement.Imo, the fee to be an elite member, is so affordable, that its not that big a deal, but i personally know of many people that have been helped here, including myself. Its kind of a no brainer imo.thanks
