Hello Mike,

I think Elite membership is a low hurdle and a very reasonable criteria to allow downloads (many of which are really good).

I wouldn't mess with the # posts idea, but I think membership (Elite) is very reasonable. A good idea to restrict those who care nothing about this community (although they will still exists and borrow from here, post it there and make a buck)...

Best-

your website is amazing.
i have definetly not posted much (acctually very few), however i have learned a lot from reading and watching the webinars as well as from downloading the indicators.
i have paid for my elite membership and it couldnt have been more pleasant expirience.

amazing website, people with a lot of knowlendge willing to "give it for free" , amazing indicators (wether its free or elite)
i could even pay for the webinars alone.

anyway
its your call mike.
im with you.

Mike,

This makes perfect sense as you have grown quite a bit over the last couple years. Also, more moderators might help.

Keep up the great work, you have the best forums that I have seen.

All,

I am contemplating a major / drastic change to the behavior of all downloads on the site. The change would be to make all downloads Elite Only. I mean all downloads, in posts, threads, downloads section, everywhere globally. The only exclusion would be images (screen shots), but all other file types would be available only to Elite Members.

I have mixed feelings on this, so wanted to get some feedback from the users to consider as well before making any decisions. The main reason for the desire to change is to protect the work and to protect the value of the community.

Right now, too many "bots" are downloading our indicators and posting them on other sites as their own. Right now, too many real people register "fake" accounts because they can't even be bothered to spend 30 seconds to type in correct info when they register, all because all they want is to download something and likely never participate further in the site.

I previously tried enforcing a 10 post minimum for downloads, but all that did was have people create 10 junk posts. So that isn't going to work.

It seems the best way to protect the collection of downloads the users have worked very hard on, is to restrict access to only those who are serious about trading.

It certainly doesn't have to be Elite only, but the only other realistic option to implement is the minimum post requirement. If I change it to say 50 (instead of what we tried before, 10) then maybe it would prevent people from creating 50 spam posts just to download something, but still allow people who are serious about trading - but for whatever reason aren't Elite members - to still download. But the problem is, 50 posts is far, far more than what most people have (unfortunately), so such a requirement is likely to just piss off a lot of people.

The desire to change is not about increasing Elite sign ups. In fact, lately I have been wondering if futures.io (formerly BMT) is getting "too big" as we've started to attract some of the trolls from other sites and sometimes some of the posts are getting unfriendly lately. I am fighting this very hard as I am sure you are as well. We all want futures.io (formerly BMT) to remain a unique place, a place where everyone is truly here to help, and not start arguments, call each other names, or other troll like behavior. So this might mean making futures.io (formerly BMT) a more exclusive place where only serious traders are welcome.

Now obviously, just because someone pays for Elite membership does not automatically mean they are a serious trader. But they are probably far less likely to be a trouble maker while paying for the privilege to be here.

So a move of making all downloads Elite only might stunt our growth in terms of new user sign ups to the site, but that is fine with me if it means that what growth we have is of a higher quality and caliber user. I don't want to make the requirement solely based on post count, because there are far, far too many people who do not post much but are still working very hard to improve their trading. These people have signed up for Elite status to help support the site, and I think that entitles them to receive the downloads without a minimum post requirement.

Anyway, so there it is. Some of my many thoughts on the matter. Please share yours. I'm hoping to get a good mix of replies from both Elite Members and non-Elite Members.

Mike

You can't have your cake and eat it too!
futures.io (formerly BMT) must decide, like other user forums, if it wants to operate its web site as a commercial venture, or be a free resource to its visitors. There is no doubt that the quality of information and indicators is high. However, does futures.io (formerly BMT) want to become a free trader's resource, or a for profit web service web-site. It seems to me that forcing visitors to enter their comments in order to be in "good standing" with futures.io (formerly BMT) is crossing the line. The web in general is a free marketplace, and those web sites that provide free resource are popular because of the quality of their information and resource. On the other hand, if futures.io (formerly BMT) wants to become a paid web site only, fine. But don't force visitors to contribute their opinions in order to maintain their good standing with futures.io (formerly BMT). Choose: free resource or paid resource. You can't have both ways. Otherwise, if you disagree, ask a woman if she was ever half pregnant....

I'm not (but was) an Elite member but I still think Mikes ideas of downloads for Elite members only is fair.

I don't use special indicators so it wont really affect me. nevertheless being part of a helpful forum where your questions are answered in a helpful manner is amazing and for free its a traders haven.......I for one am very grateful and appreciative.

So keep the forum open for questions etc to all and have it Elite members only for indicator downloads.

Mike,
I would support your thought on this, I don't see Downloads elsewhere, b'cause I am not looking around for Downloads. I don't trust too many sites other the BigMikes!

Perhaps time to reign in the behavior and make all who use site an Elite member, I would support you on this.

Another note...Since a good amount of indicators are for Ninja Trader, I would like you to contact NinjaTrader for a "Big Mikes" discount. The lifetime fee should be reduced, for all the new business you could bring to them.

Thanks for the great site!

I am really new and this is my first post.

I do not mind the fee to join to be an elite member. I would agree with the download idea but I think additional control might help. (for example "enter the characters") so the person downloading needs to be a real person.

My recent search for indicators that work in Ninja Trader 7 has not been the best but maybe I am expecting too much because I am also new to Ninja Trader.

futures.io (formerly BMT) seems like a wonderful website I tell people about it at local trading meetings so I just need to become a better contributing member.

This is a great site! I have been an elite member from thew time I first came across the site, I have told others it was worth getting the elite membership as well.

If you think it will improve the site I will continue to support you as I have been do'n.
