Deep

Deep,

May I call you this or am I being to cordial to soon? The short answer is yes but please understand that the ES does have stoppages daily and on Friday until late Sunday afternoon. I find that at times I'll carry out a position if I'm working in a deep trend, furthermore if I'm awake early enough (I live on the west coast, United States) I'll buy into a developing trend pre-market hours. Often times some of the best action can be in the hour after the regular markets open as over night gaps tend to deepen or reverse so if you're only trading in the normal block hours you're going to miss opportunity. Now with all of this said I enjoy going to bed at night clean, most of the time, as I find I sleep much better. I'm not certain I could make it as a trader if I were limited to only after hours action. Additionally, this will depend on what instrument you trade. For example ES futures and options on futures will work but if your trading options on SPY they will close out at 4:15 daily. I trade the SPY options frequently so this factors into my timing as well. If I carry out I'll switch to options on the ES futures late day for trades that might be effected. Different animal though and one that takes many years of professional mentorship and practice on a paper trade account. I'm not saying options on SPY are a easy but one less layer of thought at least in my opinion. I should say I also respect others views on this subject these are just my thought.

I am an aspiring trader with a job during market hours. Can the ES be actively traded, or day traded, after the stock markets closed or does it require actual movement of the S&P 500? If not can commodities and forex?

Yes and Yes

ES after market

I am in the same boat with a day job. There is usually movement but limited volume so it can move slow. Typical ES from Friday 12/24 attached.

Europe definitely picks things up when they open. Have been meaning to wake up to trade from 2-3 am for me but has not been happening. Still like my sleep when I can get it.

G'day

Ive had a few shots in at the ES during Aussie/Asian hours its a differnt game completly, feels differnt, moves different. but everyone now and then you get some good moves be prepared to hold your trade for a while though and i wouldnt try scalping for a few ticks as its a bit choppy on most days. - Just from my observations i find i dont get stopped out as much during the asian time zone.

I've noticed, watching how large slippage on candle wicks are, if I set my stops 10 or 12, my targets always get filled. Also by looking at resistance and supports, I kinda see the trade zones.

When volatility is like this, yes. Otherwise, no. There generally has to be a reason for international players to be trading our futures in size to really move it around during the Globex session.

ETH trends, RTH mean reverts and half the move happens during the the ETH.

China and Europe is just as important as the US now and has being for some time.

Make sure you research your broker thoroughly. I wouldn't go near AMP if I were you.

Mike

Why is that Mike? I am from Canada and they are pretty much the only futures broker with reasonable commissions that would accept me as a client. I have had them for well over a year and haven't had anything to complain about yet.

Thanks for any info, sorry to hijack the thread, I am also interested in potential of Globex ES trading which is brought me here. It does seem to be more and more active, especially in Euro session.

All of those are 24 hour markets so they can all be traded after market hours. The index futures follow overseas markets when the cash market is closed.

I trade ES after market hours - the main thing you need to consider is liquidity and volatility.

US Central time:
3:30pm to about 2:30 am - Asian session, which has terrible volumes, about 30 lots per minute and is untradeable unless you scalp.
2:30am to 8:30am - Europe session, which has much better volumes coming into the US open. From 200 up to 800 lots per minute coming into the close.

Best times to trade if you want volatility outside of normal hours is 6:30am to 8:30am for European close or 2:30am to 4:30am for European open.

You might be better off trading a currency depending if those times don't suit.

what do you mean by lots per minute? what is the best way to know how much volume a session has as I am looking at trading after market hours.

thanks
