Hey everyone,
I'm curious what people use for tick chart intervals for the different indexes (I know CL isn't an index... but 2/3 are indexes, and I didn't want to create a duplicate post in the commodities forum) and why. I started using tick charts instead of time charts because they seem to hint at moves earlier than time charts. What I currently experiment with is:

CL: 233, 500, 1500
NQ: 150, 450, 1350
YM: 100, 300, 900

I use 3675 or sometimes 2875 on ES, 2000 on the rest.

Interesting... Out of curiosity, why do you not use any smaller tick frames in conjunction with those?

1597 on TF is as low as I go. The higher the tick count the more crap you weed out...less false signals.

As for other instruments, I will confess to having used 825 on the yen and canadian, seemed to give me the best signals without to many falses.

Edit:
By the way, what I did and maybe you have as well is to play around with different tick counts and see what the chart looks like with different settings. When you get a good number for a particular instrument you'll know it by seeing good reversal candles and/or patterns that not only look good but have worked.

If you can't see good signals on a given tick number try a new number and also keep in mind what may work on one guys data feed may not work so well on yours...that's why you have to experiment with the different numbers....

doesn't matter what tick size we use.

the important thing is we can read supply demand from any tick size

For me the size matters. When the NQ was ripping down on Friday, I had a hard time following when so many candles were printing on my 450 tick chart (my smallest timeframe for NQ). For me to understand the price action better in those times, I have to look at a larger tick/volume chart to keep up. It must be a preference and trading style thing.

On NQ I like a 450, 800, 2700, and 4500 tick. As well as a 1600 and 3200 volume. I have a daily in there to pull up as well.

I have read about tick and volume charts. i have never implemented either of them. If I have this right, tick charts represent transactions regardless of contract size and volume represents individual contracts? Please correctme if I am wrong.

Also for those of you that have used both: WHat differences are there in the way you interrpret the 2?

Thanks!
