Background:
I am a newbie trader and I am trading in SIM with ES. I can only trade for 1 hour after the ES open prior to leaving for work.

What am I doing?
I will be reading the prior night and previous days price on the ES before the 9:30 Eastern ďopenĒ. I will mark four Price Areas (PA), which is where I expect the market to go based on previous price action. There will be a potential daily high (PH) and a potential daily low (PL) based on one price reading method. There will be two other PA based on another price reading method. The high / low of the day can occur after market close until 24:00 I will log the predictions at futures.io (formerly BMT) before the open in this thread. There may not be predictions if I donít see a confluence of price but I will state as such. If there is no entry I am not available to look at the market that day.

I will then log the actual results when I get home after work.

Times will be Easter Standard Time.

Why not a trading journal?
Why am I doing this?

As you can see by what I am doing that this not a trading journal. Iím not ready for that yet. I notice as I trade in SIM for the need to instill some discipline and this is my first step, similar to defensive drills in basketball practice. Iím not trying to simulate a game yet just one part of my skill set. The trading journal will be added to this later or in another thread.

This is Price Area Journal. I need to improve my discipline prior to the market open to review price movements from the prior 24 - 48 hours. I have a tendency to look at only what price is doing right now. Creating this journal will make this process a routine and provide a goal for reading the price movements. I donít care if Iím right or wrong but that I go through the exercise.

I will be treating this like a journal / diary and it may have random thoughts, my feelings that day including emotions, etc. Thatís why we have journals, right? As Big Mike says, we need to hold ourselves accountable and be honest with ourselves, hence the journal. By posting this journal I am hoping I will hold myself (peer pressure of the forum) to working on this skill.

How do I read price action?
This process will be ever evolving. Iím looking at support / resistance which we all read differently. I am not using any indicators for this exercise.

How will I use this information?
This is just a tool to make me look at the prior price action. I will not be using this to make specific trades.

What should you do / not do?
Read this journal for entertainment and fun. Provide encouragement. Do not use it to make trades.

Please do not make your own predictions in this thread. Create a journal of your own.

PH:1105: High of the day at 1106.75 at 15:50. Price consolidated around 1105 for 2 hours from 14:30 to 16:30
PA1:1102: To the tick and reversed at 10:15 back down to the open and then up to the high. (Editorial comment: Evil Mr. Market took out all of those stops sitting above the blue line of 1100 then reversed it after all those people took longs to catch the breakout. Evil Mr. Market then dropped the price 6 points to take out the longs and reversed again up to the highs. He's a mean one that Mr. Market.)
Open:1096.25
PA2:1091: Did not come into play today. (Random thought: Many stops below 1093 - 1095 now. Will evil Mr. Market take this out on Friday or next week?)
PL:1088: Did not come into play today.

The 1013 from Friday hit within a tick this morning. I still like the 1091 and 1088 from last week but for a pull back later. The lower targets have been moved up for now.

Wow, that was some dramatic drop at 15:21.

The lower blue line was the battle area for the day. PA2 was a nice target.

Area:Prediction
PH: 1118: Did not come into play.
PA1: 1115: Did not come into play.
Open:1110.75
PA2: 1104: Price moved from the open down to 1103.75, held and reversed. The market came back down to within a few ticks a few more times during the day
PL: 1101: See PA2

1013 hit again overnight and back down to the 1104 from yesterday. 1013 and 1104 are becoming important areas in the market. I still like the 1091 and 1088 from last week but for a pull back later.

Area:Prediction
PH: 1117.50
PA1: 1114.50
Open:
PA2: 1101

Even though I didn't mark them on my chart, as I said this morning I still liked the 1091 and 1088 from last week but I expected it to happen later this week. Well, 1091 hit today as support.

Area:Prediction
PH: 1117.50-Did not come into play
PA1: 1114.50-Did not come into play
Open:1103.75
PA2: 1101-Price blew right through 1101 during the news.
PL: 1098-Low was 1090.25. Once 1098 was broken it became resistance multiple times during the day.

Now that we have gone down to the 1091/1088 level we need to keep our eyes on the 1113 and 1104 areas above for later. (I just noticed I was typing 1013 instead of 1113 in some prior posts, oops, I marked the charts correctly but can't seem to edit them to fix the posts #16, #18). On the lower side if 1087 breaks we probably see the next level of 1079.

Area:Prediction
PH: 1103.50
PA1: 1100.50
Open:
PA2: 1090.50
PL: 1087.50

Bulls were in control today except for the news. Well the 1104 hit as we discussed this morning. Price opened and moved up to PA1, got blasted by the news down to 1094, and then some trigger (Bernanke I guess) moved it up to PH and it pulled back to PA1 as support and back up to 1104.

Area:Prediction
PH: 1103.50-See intro
PA1: 1100.50-See intro
Open:1096.25
PA2: 1090.50-Did not come into play
PL: 1087.50-Did not come into play

After I put up my charts and before the open price moved down to the lower targets. The PL was penetrated (3 points) multiple times but held in the morning all the way to 12:00. Then we moved all the way up to PA1 and probably overnight we will hit the PH. Nice.

For the few readers I have:

Is this something you are enjoying?
Do you find this helpful for targets?

I'm just curious.

Yes , quite so and please continue Andrew . I like your analysis and compare your #s with mine and they give me a heads up . As far as Im concerened if you are aware of the broader picture your trading battle is half won . The biggest chunk of the other half is trusting your analysis and acting upon it consistently . Thanks and looking forward to your insight .

I almost forget , one question . Your previous OHLC is based upon the NYSE session time ?

EricJ
I have the 24 hour ES on my chart. When I get to the computer in the morning 6AM or so(I'm west coast) at 9AM (eastern) I pull up the chart and mark resistance manually.

Then the "Open" in my results is the NYSE open time. My current lifestyle allows me to trade from my time (Pacific) from about 6AM until 7:30AM so I'm trading right at the NY open.

I hope that answers your question.

Andrew

As discussed yesterday I expected the 1106.50 to be hit after my last post and it was. 1113 is looking good again. Let's not lose sight of the 1086 area from yesterday for later.

Area:Prediction
PH: 1112.50
PA1: 1109.50
NYSE Open:
PA2: 1098.50
PL: 1095.50

The open was down toward the lower levels hit within a point of the PL and reversed. The upper areas were not tested.

Note to self (watch your math!! PA2 should have been 1099.25 and PL should have been 1096.25 which would have been to the exact tick)

Area:Prediction
PH: 1112.50
PA1: 1109.50
NYSE Open:1103
PA2: 1098.50
PL: 1095.50

Is it March already?

The market tried to make it up to the 1113 last night as we have been discussing for a while.

I'm doing something different as a trial. Two blue lines for resistance. Then I'm using the constant zones for potential price areas. I don't know if I'll use these as take profit, look for reversal, don't buy / sell zones. I'll use them for a while and we will see what happens.

Upper zone: 1112.75 - 1115.75
NYSE Open:
Lower zone: 1102 - 1098

Our first resistance line was hit and the market pulled back waiting for the news (bringing sellers into the market). The news pushed down to the open and then like a sling shot went the other way. Then the move was up to our upper zone. Once those stops above the resistance were broken then it was smooth sailing up to the zone.

Lower zone: 1102 - 1098

We had an awesome first day with the resistance lines and zones.

Our first resistance line was hit and the market pulled back waiting for the news (bringing sellers into the market). The news pushed down to the open and then like a sling shot went the other way. Then the move was up to our upper zone. Once those stops above the resistance were broken then it was smooth sailing up to the zone.

The first penetration into the upper zone was resistance and then a 5 point pull back (just like the prior pull back almost to the tick). Then we went right up to the zone again and eventually within 1 tick of the high of the upper band.

Sweet

They didn't want us in that move overnight last night. The market went from 1116 to a high of 1122. They didn't hold any areas for very long so the resistance / support is somewhat suspect.

The upper resistance line acted as such today. Then a pull back and a push to one tick away from the Upper zone. A very narrow range today.

There are three lines today. The additional red one is from yesterday and has been a key point in the market going back to 2/19. See the 30 minute chart.

Note: as I was typing this up a quick move happened to one of my resistance lines. I may need to do this again prior to market open.......

Well, I'm done SIM trading for the morning. I would have done much better had I trusted my pre-market areas.

Prior to the NYSE open the upper resistance line was broken and price went to the tick to the bottom of the upper zone. Price then opened at 1120.25 pulled down to the upper blue line (as support and blasted up into the zone. 10AM rolled around and it moved within 1 tick of the top of the upper zone. The picture speaks for itself.

Is the bottom of the zone playing support now?????

Upper zone: 1120.75 - 1123.75

I said I was done SIM trading but took another point based on my question about the bottom of the zone being support. The answer was yes.

FROM THE MID MORNING UPDATE
Prior to the NYSE open the upper resistance line was broken and price went to the tick to the bottom of the upper zone. Price then opened at 1120.25 pulled down to the upper blue line (as support) and blasted up into the zone. 10AM rolled around and it moved within 1 tick of the top of the upper zone. The picture speaks for itself.

END OF DAY UPDATE
Whoa. The blue lines and upper zone were fantastic. Price came back down at 10:33 to at the tick support in the zone and the went and poked it's head out. It slide back down into the zone and worked it's way to the lower level tried to hold a couple of times and then down to the bottom blue within a tick. Right back up to the upper blue. Again, the picture speaks for itself.

For the fun of it I added SMI4 on the second picture (See Holy Grail 2 Thread). Hmmmmm, further analysis is due.

Upper zone: 1120.75 - 1123.75
NYSE Open: 1120.25
Lower zone: 1110.75 - 1113.75

I got up late this morning and only added the picture to the pre-market post. I have added the zone information below that was in the pre-market picture.

The market moved up off the open to chop around in the upper zone. The 10:00 move started down and didn't quite make it to the lower blue line. The bulls jumped back in and ran it back to the upper blue line and chopped it around hitting the lower part of the upper zone as resistance. The third time broke the zone by the time I got home the upper zone high was met.

Upper zone: 1120.75 - 1123.75
NYSE Open: 1119.75
Lower zone: 1109.50 - 1112.50

These moves for the 5:30 news before I draw my lines screw with my reading. I am less confident in my areas this morning.

The market open at 1129.25 and went to the lower blue line to the tick and then screaming back up to the upper blue line. It paused there to consolidate and then to the upper zone and within 2 ticks of the top. There really wasn't any threat to the bottom of the zone and the next push was out of the top.

The market broke up at the open through Resistance 1 and to the tick stopped at the bottom of the upper zone. After that a push down through resistance 1 and then price just pivoted around resistance 1 until a push that didn't quite make it to resistance 2. Back up to within 2 ticks of the bottom of the upper zone and then down to resistance 2.

Price opened just below our resistance and broke through. Smooth sailing up to the bottom of the upper zone. Price rested at the bottom of the zone for 10 minutes and then broke up. The third time was the charm at the top of the zone. When the market decided to reverse it went right back to the bottom of the upper zone.

The zone edges were quite good holding price in today. But the third attempt at the upper zone and price zoomed right through. Price also hung around our upper resistance line a lot today.

Upper zone: 1146 - 1149 (sorry about inverting the numbers this morning)
Resistance 1: 1144
NYSE Open: 1142.50
Resistance 2: 1140.50
Lower zone: 1138.50 - 1135.50

The news already moved price up to the zone as I was rolling over the contracts. The next move up (assuming it moves up) will be to 1157ish (red line).

The rule about support becoming resistance when broken was true today.

Price meandered down out of the upper zone, broke resistance 1 and to the tick to the resistance 2. Back up to resistance 1 and down to resistance 2 for a couple of bars and the the third time was the charm. Through resistance 2 down to the lower zone. Up / down / up down the rest of the day from resistance 2 and the lower zone.

Upper zone: 1151 - 1154
Resistance 1: 1149
NYSE Open: 1150
Resistance 2: 1146
Lower zone: 1141 - 1144

Note: we are over 50 posts and close to 1000 views. This has helped me tremendously for my trading before work. I have good targets and/or reasons the market reverses/pauses.

The day didn't break out of the resistance lines until after I went to work. After resistance 2 broke the market moved to within a few ticks of the bottom of the lower zone. Up to res 2, down to top of lower zone, then all the way up to the bottom of the upper zone. Nice. I hope someone caught that run. That was a 10 pointer

Upper zone: - 1146 - 1149
Resistance 1: 1144
NYSE Open: 1143.50
Resistance 2: 1141
Lower zone: 1139 - 1136

I wish I could have stayed around to trade longer today. Only a few points within the range before I had to go to work. But the lines and bands did their job today. Picture attached and it speaks for itself.

Open was right down to the Res 2. Then back up to Res 1. A retracement that didn't take us to Res 2 so it was likely Res 1 was not going to hold. Punch through Res 1, held, then on up to 2 ticks to the top of the upper zone. Back down to within 1 tick of Res 1.

Then FOMC news. But notice how it still respected the areas we marked this morning. Nice

Upper zone: 1150.50 - 1153.30
Resistance 1: 1148.50
NYSE Open: 1148.75
Resistance 2: 1146
Lower zone: 1141 - 1144

How are the price levels computed?
How do one trade these? Bounce off of S/R? Or play the breakout/breakdown?

I like trading horizontal lines

The indicators are the constant line / constant zone from the downloads, which I update everyday before the NYSE open.

The blue lines are based on my view of support and resistance from the overnight session or something that is obvious from prior days, i.e. a cluster of turning points. The zones are just + / - from the blue lines. I'm playing around with the distance from the blue lines as part of this exercise.

I post these before NYSE just to help me understand where important price areas are going to potentially be for the day. I do not have a trading plan for these yet. Post 1 describes why I am doing this, which is to help me understand support / resistance and that (1) price returns to the same areas and (2) price likes to extend those areas at some point (stop running by the professionals).

Oh, and I agree. I'm beginning to like horizontal lines better than moving / averaging indicators.

I'm going to develop a plan to use these at some points. My day job keeps me way too busy right now. Conference calls at 7AM tomorrow will make the trading morning shorter than normal. Bleh! But the day job pays the bills while I'm learning to trade. So really I shouldn't (but I love to) complain.

We are coming into new trading areas. Nothing quite obvious today except way below these prices.

Upper zone: 1160 - 1163
Resistance 1: 1158
NYSE Open:
Resistance 2: 1154.50
Lower zone: 1152.50 - 1149.50

Price broke above Res 1 and stayed above it all day. 1160 was resistance and then broke through almost up to the top of the upper zone, pull back, and then punched through.

Amazing how the market did a double top around 14:27 then slammed right down to Res 1 and then reversed back to the zone. The market does respect certain areas.

Upper zone: 1160 - 1163
Resistance 1: 1158
NYSE Open: 1157.50
Resistance 2: 1154.50
Lower zone: 1152.50 - 1149.50

The market went to the bottom of the upper zone and could not hold at the open. Neither resistance nor the zone could hold price up on the way down. The lower part of the lower zone was a good target for me before work. Once price broke through the lower zone it became resistance.

Upper zone: 1164.50 - 1167.50
Resistance 1: 1162.50
NYSE Open: 1164.50
Resistance 2: 1160
Lower zone: 1155 - 1158

NYSE Open: 1148.25

The resistance areas were such today with a couple of pokes below without reaching the lower zone. The third time up to Res 1 without down to the lower and it went to the top of the upper zone.

Resistance 1: 1164.75
NYSE Open: 1162.75
Resistance 2: 1160.75
Lower zone: 1155.75 - 1158.75

I need to pause this thread for a short while. I will be back soon.
