I am starting this thread as a place for traders to dig a little deeper into their trading stats and to look at their performance from different angles. We all know the typical stats like R:R, drawdown, expectancy etc. But what if we start thinking of some creative ways of looking at our data. What can we learn about our performance by digging deeper!
My hope is that traders will join in by posting performance charts, stats, figures in new or unique ways. Whether your stats are good or bad is really irrelevant. What matters is that we share and benefit from different ways of analyzing performance metrics.
I'll kick this off with some examples.
The below chart plots a rolling 20 trade win percentage against a rolling 20 trade R:R.
Key things to be aware of:
- Number of trades included: 87
- Time period: Jan to 1Oct2014
- I do not use fixed targets. The size of my targets (and therefore my R:R) varies based on market structure
Observations:
- the stats indicate that my Win % is inversely correlated to my R:R.
- If someone relies on a high win % to be profitable, it is likely not sustainable over the long term. One of the reasons why scalping is so difficult. R:R is where it's at! :)
The next chart is not earth shattering but is never the less interesting. Instead of getting worried when we find ourselves in a drawdown, why not rather visually plot our consecutive winning days vs losing days. This is a great way to see how our current drawdown or run-up compares historically.
These were just two examples to kick things off. I really hope others join in with creative ways of analyzing performance that we can all benefit from. I know there are a lot of excel and R guru's here.
