Analyze the news

Hello,

I'm trying to learn how to analyze the news that comes out and then affects futures market. Basically to dab in fundamental trading but I'm still overall a technical trader just trying to expand my thought process. Any tips on where to start or books that give you insight on what to look for. Thanks

Hi DreamerJ

My recommendation would be to start on getting a 'squawk' service, i.e. one of those services now available to the retail trader that announce news + economic data releases in real time as they are published.

Next would be getting familiar with the different types of news and data releases and how they affect which markets.

For instance, one of the most significant data releases published each month is arguably the US Non Farm Payrolls, which has the potential to affect several markets.

I am not aware of any books on the subject - I know there was a webinar on this forum somewhere about trading the news.

Hi DreamerJ,

I trade oil but I have never tried to trade for example during the inventory release. On SIM it seems possible to play the news but I have no idea what would be the real fill outside SIM. I suggest that you look at Michaelleemoore journal and ask him the question since he has already trade this news on CL.

I suggest that you look at very short term charts during the news releases (for example 2 ticks range charts) and you will have a much clear idea of what the word volatility means

Taking a position before the news in order to anticipate the result seems to me like playing Russian roulette, but it is a very personal point of view.

I have traded CL data releases. Because of CL's volatility you can get quite a bit of slippage on your stops during the data release, if the market goes against you.

But if you get it right you can get a nice 50+ ticks in the space of 2-3 seconds.

Overall, trading CL data releases is quite risky I would say.

Do you have a link to his journal?

Well, look no further than EUR/USD today right after ECB announced economic policies, and again during Draghi's conference call....
