Sometimes the currencies (6E, 6S and 6J in particular) are pretty lively, and other days they have little movement. What means are there to help forecast which days they are likely to be more active?

Try currency strength meter. There are various versions of it on the web. I have not tried it so I do not know how well it works.

Keep an eye on
  • Range(ADR, ATR) t-1, and several other time-related periods prior to today
  • Expected News releases
  • Volume is highly correlated with volatility
  • Movement in correlated instruments
