Hello there,

I recently visited China on a holiday and was amazed to learn that they consider Jade/Jadeite more precious than gold. They revere Jade as the most precious wealthy possession. Apparently Jade is dwindling fast and China will run out of Jade in the not so distant future. So most chinese we came across on the trip shared that they were considering buying jade as an investment opportunity. This was the first that I heard about 'investing in jade' idea, because until this point I had never heard of jade as anything but a stone used in jewellery. Although having done some interent research on jade upon my return, I found nothing much on jade or investing in jade.

I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this?

Thanks

You said it. Only China and a few others like Jade. I would do something that 'everybody' likes.

Where can I find the rollover dates for Jade futures?

This is bit off-topic but I used to know a guy who traveled around south america and other less developed areas buying gemstones (he traded a lot of emeralds, if I remember correctly) which he imported to the US and sold to jewelry stores and jewelry makers. He made good money and it sounded like he had a lot of fun on his travels. His 'edge' , if you want to call it that, was his ability to get to know local sources and find the 'real wholesale' prices not the 'wholesale for foreign tourists' prices.

When there isn't a liquid global market for something, it can mean there are opportunities to do the old-fashioned sort of trading: buying something in one part of the world and moving it yourself to another part where the price is higher.

I really like Jade, not as an investment but for its beauty. Top quality jadeite is very expensive and the Chinese have mastered the art of knocking it off with stones that only a service like GIA or a certified colored stone gemologist would catch.

Best to buy from a trusted family member or auction house.

With China's new found wealth and sheer number of people I'm sure we will see many speculative bubble crazes during our time, more so than what we are use to in the US just because the crowd is so much bigger.
Jade at 3k an ounce sounds great if you could be selling it right now.
Buying it as a long term investment would be completely foolish.
